Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

Can I exchange naira notes for AUD in Sydney or Melbourne?

Naira cash is hard to sell outside Nigeria. Why exchange counters in Australia rarely take it, what your notes are worth, and better uses for them.

The short answer

Probably not at a typical exchange counter. The naira is widely described as a closed currency that bureaux outside Nigeria do not exchange, and we found no Australian outlet publishing a naira buy rate. The practical options are to carry the notes back and use or deposit them in Nigeria, give them to someone travelling home, or, for small amounts, a mail-in buyer that pays a very low price.

Why foreign exchange counters avoid naira

Leftover Currency, a UK firm that buys unused notes by post, describes the naira on its page as "a closed currency" and states that "bureaux de change outside of Nigeria do not exchange Nigerian Naira". A counter that buys a currency needs somewhere to sell it on; with naira mostly used inside Nigeria and the official market run through Nigerian banks and licensed dealers, there is little demand for the notes abroad.

We did not find an Australian exchange outlet that lists naira among the currencies it buys. Some may handle it on request, so if you want to try, phone the branch first and ask for a buy rate on the amount you hold. Expect it to be far below the official rate, if offered at all.

What your notes are worth

Inside Nigeria, naira cash is worth its face value. The CBN said in October 2024, as reported by Channels TV, that all its banknotes, old and redesigned, "will continue to remain legal tender indefinitely", and that banks must keep issuing and accepting all denominations. So older ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1,000 notes you brought out of Nigeria years ago are still usable at home.

Outside Nigeria, a note is worth only what a buyer offers. Leftover Currency's listed prices are tiny fractions of a penny per naira note: for example £0.00050 for a ₦10 note. That is a measure of how little a foreign buyer will pay, not of the note's value in Lagos.

Your options, compared

OptionGood forTrade-off
Keep the notes for your next tripAny amount you will spend in NigeriaMoney sits idle until you travel
Deposit into your Nigerian account on your next visitLarger sumsYou need an active account; large cash deposits may be questioned
Give to a relative or friend flying homeFamily gifts or errandsTrust, and cash rules at both borders
Mail-in currency buyerSmall, leftover amounts onlyVery low price; postage; buyers are mostly overseas
Ask an Australian exchange counterTesting the marketUsually not accepted; poor rate if it is

If someone carries the notes for you

Cash rules apply to whoever carries it. On the Nigerian side, reports of the CBN's 2026 foreign exchange guidelines describe declaration rules for foreign currency cash; we did not find a current published limit for naira cash carried in or out by travellers, so ask the Nigeria Customs Service or the airline before carrying a large naira sum. Australia also has declaration rules for cash carried across its border; see bringing cash into Australia.

If you hold an Australian passport and visit as a foreigner

Reports of the CBN's 2026 foreign exchange guidelines by TheNigeriaLawyer say visitors leaving Nigeria may exchange unused naira back into foreign currency, "provided there is evidence of initial conversion", and through an authorised dealer only up to the amount converted on entry. If you travel on an Australian passport and change dollars into naira on arrival, keep the receipt. It is the document that lets you change the leftover back before you fly, which is far easier than trying to sell the notes in Sydney or Melbourne afterwards.

This route is for converting at a Nigerian bank or licensed dealer before departure. It does not help once the notes are already in Australia.

Avoiding naira cash next time

  • Spend or deposit naira before you fly back to Australia.
  • Keep any naira you plan to use next trip in an account at home rather than in notes.
  • For family gifts, send money to a bank account instead of carrying cash.
  • If you need naira on arrival, a transfer to your own Nigerian account before you travel is safer than cash in luggage.

A worked example

Example only: you have ₦250,000 in notes left from a December trip. A mail-in buyer quoting a tiny fraction of the official rate might pay the equivalent of a few Australian dollars, less postage. Deposited into your Nigerian account on your next visit, the same notes are worth ₦250,000 at home, enough to cover, for instance, part of a family member's bills. Holding on to them is almost always the better choice.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal account, opened from Australia, gives you a naira account number held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, so leftover naira can be deposited on your next trip and used for family or bills from Australia afterwards. See multicurrency, Send and budgeting for a December trip. Outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Can I change naira to Australian dollars in Sydney?

Most exchange counters do not buy naira. Phone ahead if you want to try, and expect a very poor rate if one is offered.

Are old naira notes still valid?

Yes. The CBN said in October 2024 that all its banknotes, old and redesigned, remain legal tender indefinitely.

Where can I sell naira notes outside Nigeria?

Some mail-in currency buyers take naira, but at a tiny price. Keeping the notes for your next trip is usually worth far more.

Can a relative carry my naira notes to Nigeria?

Yes, but cash rules apply to the person carrying it at both borders. Check current rules before large amounts are carried.
