Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Can you claim parents in Nigeria as dependants in Canada?

Why money you send to parents in Nigeria usually earns no Canadian tax credit, what the caregiver amount requires and the residency rule that decides it.

The short answer

Generally no. The CRA's Canada caregiver amount for infirm dependants aged 18 or older requires a parent or grandparent to have been resident in Canada at some time in the year; the exception applies only to your own or your spouse's children and grandchildren. Parents who live in Nigeria throughout the year therefore do not qualify, however much you send them.

Supporting parents at home is close to universal among Nigerians in Canada. Monthly upkeep, drugs for blood pressure, rent, school fees for a younger sibling: it adds up, and it is natural to ask whether the CRA gives anything back. The short answer is that Canadian dependant credits are built around people who live in Canada, with narrow exceptions. This page explains the rule as the CRA states it for the 2025 tax year. It is information, not tax advice.

The credit people usually mean

The relevant credit is the Canada caregiver amount for other infirm dependants aged 18 or older, claimed on line 30450 of the federal return. According to the CRA, for 2025 it can be claimed for each dependant who meets all of these conditions:

  • they depended on you because of a mental or physical infirmity, and the dependency is solely due to that infirmity (a temporary illness or injury does not qualify);
  • they were 18 or older;
  • they were your, or your spouse's or common-law partner's, child, grandchild, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew;
  • their net income was below $28,798;
  • nobody else claimed them on line 30300 or 30400;
  • they were resident in Canada at any time during the year, unless they were your or your spouse's child or grandchild.

The maximum claim for 2025 is $8,601 per dependant, reduced as the dependant's net income rises. The CRA page was last modified on 14 September 2026; check it for the current year's figures.

Why parents in Nigeria fall outside it

The last condition decides it. A parent or grandparent must have been resident in Canada at some point in the year. Your mother in Ibadan or your father in Owerri who has lived there all year is not resident in Canada, so the credit cannot be claimed for them, even if they are infirm, even if you are their only support and even if you can prove every transfer.

PersonLives in Nigeria all yearResident in Canada for part of the year
Your infirm parent or grandparentNot eligibleMay be eligible if every other condition is met
Your infirm adult child or grandchildThe residency rule does not apply to them; other conditions still applyMay be eligible
Your infirm sibling, aunt, uncle, niece, nephewNot eligibleMay be eligible

What about parents who visit?

A parent on a long visit, including on a super visa, is generally a visitor. IRCC's super visa rules expect applicants to be genuine visitors who will leave at the end of their stay. Being physically in Canada for some months is not the same as being resident for tax purposes; residence depends on ties such as a home and family here. If your parent has immigrated, for example through parent sponsorship, the position is different from the year they become resident. Ask a tax professional before claiming.

A worked example

Example only. Chuka in Edmonton sends his mother in Nnewi $400 a month, $4,800 in the year, and pays for her cataract surgery. She has lived in Nnewi all year. None of this qualifies for the line 30450 credit, because she was not resident in Canada at any time in the year. In the same year, his adult brother, who moved to Edmonton in June after a stroke and depends on Chuka, may qualify if his net income is below $28,798 and nobody else claims him.

What to check before you claim anyone

  1. Where did the person live, and for how long, during the tax year?
  2. Is the dependency due to a long-term infirmity, not a temporary illness?
  3. What was their net income for the year, converted to Canadian dollars, and is it below the CRA threshold?
  4. Is anyone else, such as a sibling in Canada, already claiming them?
  5. Do you have medical evidence of the infirmity if the CRA asks for it?

If the answer to the first question is "Nigeria, all year" for a parent or grandparent, you can stop there: the credit is not available for them.

What still helps

There is no Canadian credit for upkeep sent home, but good records still matter. Keep transfer receipts in case the CRA asks where money came from or went, and because Nigerian relatives may later need proof of who paid for property or school fees (see keeping remittance receipts). If you plan to bring a parent to Canada long term, the income tests are covered in sponsoring parents from Nigeria and the super visa income requirement.

Where Pryme fits

For regular support, Send shows the rate and the fee before you approve each transfer, and every payment can be issued as a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai, which is useful when a sibling or the CRA asks what was paid. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners; naira is held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank.

Questions people ask

Can I claim my mother in Nigeria on my Canadian taxes?

Not under the Canada caregiver amount on line 30450 if she was not resident in Canada at any time in the year, according to the CRA.

Is money I send to Nigeria tax deductible in Canada?

There is no general deduction for support sent to relatives abroad. Keep receipts for your own records.

What if my parents visit me in Canada on a super visa?

A visitor is not automatically a resident of Canada for tax purposes. Ask a tax professional whether your parent's ties make them resident.

What is the caregiver amount for 2025?

The CRA gives a maximum of $8,601 per dependant for 2025, reduced as the dependant's net income rises, with net income below $28,798.
