Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

When Nigerian products need a CITES permit for the UK

Leather, carvings, shells and other goods made from listed species need CITES documents from APHA. How to tell, and how to apply.

The short answer

A Nigerian product needs a CITES permit to enter Great Britain if it contains any part of a species listed in Annex A, B or C, such as ivory, some reptile skins, listed woods or certain shells; APHA issues the UK permit and aims to decide within 30 days. The goods must use a designated point of entry and show documents to Border Force, and importing without a valid permit can lead to up to 7 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both.

CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, controls trade in listed animals and plants and in anything made from them. Most Nigerian goods traded to the UK, such as food, fabric and cosmetics, are not affected. The products that are affected tend to be high value and easy to miss: leather goods, carvings, musical instruments, shells and some traditional medicines.

How the UK system works

GOV.UK guidance on CITES imports and exports (updated 23 June 2026) sets out the rules for Great Britain:

ListingWhat you need to import
Annex AA permit; imports allowed only in exceptional circumstances
Annex BA permit
Annex CAn import notification form

You check a species' listing in the Species+ database. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) issues GB permits. APHA's permit does not guarantee the other country will issue its own, so the Nigerian exporter also needs the export documents Nigeria requires. APHA aims to process applications within 30 days, and some are referred to scientific advisers at Kew (plants) or the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (animals). GOV.UK advises not to ship, pay for or sign contracts for specimens until you have the permit.

Application fees are set out on a separate GOV.UK page; check it for the current amount before you apply.

Nigerian products to check

  • Leather goods. Bags, belts and shoes made from crocodile skin or the skin of any other listed animal. Ask the maker for the species and its source.
  • Ivory. Carvings, bangles and decorative pieces. GOV.UK has separate ivory guidance, and UK ivory rules are strict.
  • Wood. Carvings, furniture and instruments made from listed trees. GOV.UK has issued guidance on rosewoods and palisanders (Dalbergia). See timber rules for Nigerian furniture.
  • Shells. GOV.UK names queen conch and giant clam shells in its personal effects rules, so both are controlled.
  • Animal parts in traditional products. Any product containing parts of listed animals.

Nigeria also restricts the export side: the Nigeria Customs Service export prohibition list includes endangered wildlife and its products.

Personal effects are not stock

GOV.UK describes a personal effects derogation that lets some items travel in luggage for personal use without CITES documents, for example up to 4 worked crocodilian items, 125g of caviar or up to 3kg of giant clam shells. It does not cover live specimens or items for sale. If you bring a suitcase of crocodile bags to sell, they are commercial imports and need permits.

Steps for a commercial import

  1. Get the scientific name of every animal or plant material in the product from the maker.
  2. Look up each species in Species+ to find its Annex.
  3. If listed, apply to APHA for the import permit or notification, and ask the Nigerian supplier to obtain the Nigerian export documents.
  4. Wait for the permit before shipping or paying.
  5. Route the goods through a designated point of entry and present the documents to Border Force.
  6. Keep the permits with your import records; your customs agent will need them. See using a customs broker.

What happens without a permit

GOV.UK warns that moving specimens without a valid permit or certificate can lead to up to 7 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both. Goods can also be seized. A supplier's assurance that "nobody checks" does not move that risk to the supplier; it stays with the importer.

Old objects

Antique pieces with ivory or other wildlife parts raise both CITES and cultural property questions; see bringing Nigerian antiquities to the UK.

Worked example: a leather goods range

An example only. A UK online shop plans a range of bags from a Kano leather workshop: cow leather totes, goat leather clutches and a few bags trimmed with crocodile skin. Cow and goat leather are not CITES species, so those lines are ordinary imports needing a commodity code and declaration. The crocodile-trimmed bags contain a listed species, so the shop must check the Annex in Species+, apply to APHA, wait for the permit and ask the workshop to obtain Nigerian export documents. Many shops in this position drop the exotic-skin line rather than delay the whole order; if they keep it, they ship it separately so the rest of the stock is not held.

The same thinking applies to wood: a carving workshop that can name the tree species, and show it is not listed, saves time at every stage.

Where Pryme fits

Importers who switch to non-listed materials, such as cow leather or plantation timber, still need to pay makers in Nigeria. A Pryme Business Account holds NGN and GBP, and the Compliance agent can keep permits and supplier declarations organised for your review. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Questions people ask

Who issues CITES permits in the UK?

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) issues permits for moving CITES specimens into and out of Great Britain.

How long does a CITES permit take?

APHA aims to process applications within 30 days; some are referred to Kew or the JNCC for scientific advice.

Can I bring crocodile leather bags from Lagos to sell?

Not without CITES documents. The personal effects allowance covers limited items for personal use, not goods for sale.

What is the penalty for importing without a CITES permit?

GOV.UK says up to 7 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both.
