Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

December in Owerri: how the Christmas return moves prices

Why bus fares, hotel rooms, food and event costs rise in Owerri every December, what the data shows, and a worked spending plan you can start in January.

The short answer

Every December, Igbo families living in Lagos, Abuja and abroad travel home, and Owerri sees higher demand for intercity buses, hotel rooms, shortlets, food items and event services all at once. Prices rise most for things in fixed supply over a short period: bus seats in the last two weeks of December, rooms on wedding weekends and livestock for celebrations. The answer is to book and buy early, and to budget the trip as one figure saved over the year.

The Christmas return is one of the largest seasonal movements of people in Nigeria. For Owerri, it means a few weeks when the city's population, spending and traffic jump. Residents feel it in prices; returnees feel it in the total cost of the trip. Here is what moves, why, and how to plan.

What gets more expensive, and why

CostWhat drives the December riseHow to soften it
Intercity bus faresDemand peaks in the week before Christmas; companies add buses and raise faresTravel before 18 December or after 27 December; book early
Hotels and shortletsWeddings, reunions and visitors fill rooms; some properties set December ratesBook early, ask for the rate in writing, stay with family where possible
Food items and livestockFamilies buy for large gatherings at the same timeBuy dry goods (rice, oil, garri) in November; order livestock early
Event servicesHalls, canopies, caterers, DJs and photographers are booked for weddings and ceremoniesBook and agree prices months ahead
Local transportHeavier traffic and demand around markets and churchesPlan trips outside rush hours

What the transport data shows

The National Bureau of Statistics publishes a monthly transport fare watch. Its February 2026 report, covered by The Guardian, put the South-East's average intercity bus fare at ₦8,507.45, the highest of the six zones, while its intra-city bus average of ₦1,116.10 was the lowest zone. By May 2026, Nairametrics reported a national average intercity bus fare of ₦9,699.55. These are averages for all routes, not Lagos to Owerri, and they do not capture December peaks.

Festive peaks are much higher than averages. In December 2022, Peoples Gazette reported Lagos to Onitsha fares of ₦27,800 with one major operator, against ₦10,000 to ₦18,000 quoted for Lagos to South-East and South-South routes before the rush. Fares have moved since then with fuel prices, so check operators' current December fares in November and book once they open.

Prices also rise unevenly. Goods brought into the city in bulk, such as rice, oil and drinks, tend to move less than items that are scarce for a few days, such as bus seats on 23 December, a hall on a popular Saturday, or a goat in the last days before Christmas. That is why booking early saves more on fares, rooms and services than on groceries, and why buying livestock or event services late is usually the costliest choice.

A worked spending plan

  1. Write down last December's actual spending if you have it; it is a better guide than a guess.
  2. Split the total into fixed items you can book early (fares, rooms) and variable items (food, gifts).
  3. Book the fixed items as soon as prices open; pay deposits only to verified business accounts.
  4. Save the variable amount monthly in a separate place you will not touch until December.
  5. Agree in advance with relatives who pays for what at shared events, so costs are not duplicated.

For returnees from abroad

Visitors from the UK, US and elsewhere face a few extra decisions that can make December noticeably cheaper or dearer.

  • When to convert. Converting all your money on arrival, at the busiest time of year, leaves you exposed to whatever rate is on offer that week. Converting in stages through the year, or only as you need naira, spreads the risk.
  • Cash versus transfer. Most traders, hotels and transport operators in Owerri take bank transfers. Carrying large amounts of cash through crowded parks and markets in December is a risk in itself.
  • Sending money ahead. If relatives are buying livestock or booking halls for you, send the money ahead in stages against receipts, rather than one large sum.
  • Gifts in cash. Decide the total before you travel and withdraw or set aside that amount, so requests do not drain the trip budget.

See receiving money from abroad in Owerri for the options in detail.

If you live in Owerri

Residents can use the season or shelter from it. Traders, hoteliers, caterers and transport operators earn much of their year in these weeks, so stock up and staff up early. Households can buy staples in November, avoid the busiest markets in the last week before Christmas, and expect slower movement on main roads. Be alert to seasonal scams too; see common money scams in Owerri.

Where Pryme fits

A Fixed Savings Box holds the December fund until a date you choose. Returnees from abroad can hold pounds, dollars or euros in a Pryme account and use Swap to convert to naira when they choose, seeing the rate and fee first. See also saving for December and hotel and shortlet prices in Owerri.

Questions people ask

Why are things expensive in Owerri in December?

Many people return home at once, so demand for buses, rooms, food and event services jumps over a few weeks while supply cannot grow as fast.

How much is Lagos to Owerri bus fare in December?

It changes every year with fuel prices and demand. Check operators' December fares in November and book early; festive fares are usually far above the NBS average.

When is the best time to travel to Owerri for Christmas?

Travelling before about 18 December or after 27 December usually avoids the highest fares and the worst traffic.

How much should I save for Christmas in the village?

Add up fares, food, gifts, events and local transport from last year, add a buffer of about 10%, and divide by the months left. The example above comes to ₦80,000 a month.
