Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Cheapest way to send small amounts to Nigeria

On small transfers a zero fee can win, but the exchange rate margin often costs more. How to compare the naira that actually arrives.

The short answer

For small transfers to Nigeria, the cheapest option is the one that delivers the most naira for the same amount sent, which you only see by comparing the final recipient amount. Some services, such as Taptap Send and WorldRemit on naira transfers, advertise no transfer fee, but their earnings sit in the exchange rate, so a fee-free transfer is not always the cheapest.

Sending £20 for a sibling's data, $50 for a parent's medicine or €30 for a birthday is the most common kind of remittance, and it is where costs bite hardest as a share of the money. A £2 fee on £20 is ten per cent before the exchange rate is counted. This guide explains how small-transfer pricing works, what three popular services say on their own Nigeria pages, and a simple way to compare. For the wider picture of routes, see our guide on sending money to Nigeria.

Two costs, not one

Every international transfer has two possible costs:

Transfer fee
A visible charge in your currency, sometimes fixed, sometimes a percentage, sometimes zero.
Exchange rate margin
The gap between the rate you are given and the mid-market rate, the midpoint banks trade at. It is not listed as a fee, but it reduces the naira that arrives.

A service can charge no fee and still be more expensive, if its rate is weaker. Another can charge a fee and still deliver more naira, if it uses a rate close to the mid-market. The only fair comparison is the final naira amount your recipient gets for the same amount you pay.

Welcome rates and promotions

Many apps offer a better rate or a waived fee on the first transfer or the first few hundred pounds or dollars. That is useful once, but it says little about what you will pay in month three. When comparing, look at the standard price a returning customer gets, and treat a welcome offer as a bonus rather than the reason to switch.

What the services say about small transfers

Each operator's own Nigeria page, as read in October 2026:

ServiceFee position on its Nigeria pageRate
Taptap Send"Zero transfer fees" to Nigeria; recipient amount shown in the app before you sendIts own rate, shown in the app
WorldRemitAdvertises fee-free transfers when sending in naira; fee depends on receive method, not amountShown separately from the fee
WiseShows a fee; example for 1,000 USD was 7.78 USD by direct debit and 12.18 USD by bank transferUses the mid-market rate

These are the providers' own statements, not a ranking. Fees and promotions change, and many apps give a better rate on a first transfer. Check the live figure in each app on the day.

A worked example

The rates below are illustrative and deliberately round. They are not today's rates. They show how fee and margin trade off as the amount changes.

  • Provider A: no fee, gives ₦1,950 per £1 (a 2.5% margin on an illustrative mid-market rate of ₦2,000)
  • Provider B: £1.50 fee taken from the amount on small sends, £3 on a larger send, gives the illustrative mid-market rate of ₦2,000 per £1
You sendProvider A deliversProvider B deliversCheaper
£20₦39,000 (20 × 1,950)₦37,000 (18.50 × 2,000)A, by ₦2,000
£50₦97,500 (50 × 1,950)₦97,000 (48.50 × 2,000)A, by ₦500
£500₦975,000 (500 × 1,950)₦994,000 (497 × 2,000)B, by ₦19,000

On very small amounts the fixed fee dominates and a fee-free service can win. As the amount grows the percentage margin grows with it, and a transparent rate pulls ahead. The break-even point depends on the real figures, which is why comparing the recipient amount matters more than reading any headline.

Other things that change the cost

  • How you pay. Wise's own example shows a different fee for direct debit and bank transfer; card payments can cost more with some providers.
  • How the money is received. WorldRemit says its fee depends on the receive method. Bank deposit, mobile money and cash pickup may be priced differently.
  • Paying with cash in the US. A 1% federal excise tax under new section 4475 applies to remittances funded with cash, money orders or cashier's cheques, according to CPA Practice Advisor's report on IRS proposed regulations (May 2026). Transfers funded from a US bank account or a US-issued debit or credit card are exempt.
  • Your own bank's charges. Funding from a credit card may be treated as a cash advance by the card issuer.

What to check first

  1. Enter the same amount in two or three apps on the same day and note the naira figure each shows.
  2. Compare the delivered naira, not the fee.
  3. Check the receive method. Since the CBN's naira-only directive, cash pickup has narrowed; see cash pickup in Nigeria.
  4. If you send often, check whether batching small amounts into one monthly transfer saves on fixed fees. Our guide to setting up a monthly transfer shows how.
  5. Read why app rates differ from the CBN rate before judging a rate as good or bad.

Where Pryme fits

If the person you support has a Pryme account, you can pay into its local USD, GBP or EUR details from your own bank abroad. The money stays in that currency until they choose to Swap, which shows the rate first and the fee on its own line, so they can see both costs before approving. More on holding several currencies.

Questions people ask

Which app has no fee to send money to Nigeria?

Taptap Send's Nigeria page says zero transfer fees, and WorldRemit advertises fee-free transfers when sending in naira. Both still earn on the exchange rate, so compare the naira received.

Is Wise cheaper for small amounts to Nigeria?

Wise uses the mid-market rate and charges a visible fee. On very small amounts the fee can outweigh the rate advantage; on larger amounts it often does not. Compare on the day.

Why do I get fewer naira with a no-fee app?

Because the provider's earnings are in the exchange rate margin rather than a separate fee.

Is there a tax on sending small amounts from the US?

A 1% federal excise tax applies to remittances paid for with cash, money orders or cashier's cheques. Transfers funded from a US bank account or US-issued card are exempt.
