Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

All diaspora

Starting a cargo-to-Nigeria business abroad: what to check

A diaspora cargo business needs registrations where you trade, a Nigerian clearing partner, cargo insurance and enough customs knowledge to quote fairly.

The short answer

A cargo-to-Nigeria business needs three things in place: the registrations and customs set-up of the country you ship from (in the UK, for example, an EORI number and an export declaration for every consignment), a Nigeria-side clearing partner registered with the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN), and insurance plus customer terms that say what you carry and what you do not. The Nigerian end is where most consignments are delayed, so choose that partner first.

What a diaspora cargo business actually does

Most cargo-to-Nigeria businesses abroad are consolidators: they collect boxes and barrels from customers, pack them into a shared container or air shipment, and hand them to a Nigerian agent who clears them and arranges delivery. Some also buy goods for customers. Each step has its own rules, and the customer will hold you responsible for all of them. Be clear which you do, because it decides which licences, insurance and terms you need.

Registrations in the country you ship from

These differ by country; the UK and US are given as examples.

  • Business registration and tax as for any business where you are based.
  • Export customs (UK example). business.gov.uk says a customs declaration is needed to export from the UK to any country, an EORI number is needed even if an agent or forwarder makes the declaration, forwarders and couriers often include the declaration in their service, and you should keep the declaration as proof of export.
  • Trucking (US example). If you run your own trucks for hire, FMCSA rules apply; for for-hire general freight in vehicles of 10,001 lbs or more the minimum insurance is $750,000 for bodily injury and property damage. The SBA lists transportation and logistics among activities that may need federal licences, alongside state and local ones.
  • Food consignments (Canada example). The CFIA says a business acting only as a customs broker or freight forwarder does not need a Safe Food for Canadians licence, but the importer of the food does.
  • Premises. A warehouse or packing unit may need planning use, business rates or local permits; check with your council or city.

The Nigerian end

A BusinessDay report on CRFFN membership rules describes registered practitioners as individuals and companies with their principal place of business in Nigeria, with separate categories for staff and executive freight forwarders, Nigerian-owned freight forwarding companies and freight forwarding service providers, and higher fees for non-Nigerians. A business based abroad therefore usually works with a CRFFN-registered agent in Nigeria rather than clearing goods itself. Before you sign one up:

  • Ask for their CRFFN registration and their Nigeria Customs Service licence, and check them.
  • Ask for their CAC certificate and whether they are registered with SCUML, which lists clearing and forwarding among the businesses that must register.
  • Agree in writing who pays duty, terminal charges, demurrage and delivery, and how disputes about missing items are handled.
  • Visit their warehouse, or have someone you trust do so.

Customs knowledge you need to quote properly

  • Valuation. The Nigeria Customs Service Valuation Guide 2026 follows the WTO methods in order, starting with transaction value (the price paid), then identical goods, similar goods, deductive and computed values. Customers who under-declare value to save duty create problems for every box in the container.
  • SONCAP. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria regulates most imports through SONCAP certificates, with exemptions including food, medicines and medical items (not equipment) and used products other than vehicles. Commercial shipments of regulated goods need the right certificate before they arrive.
  • Personal effects and barrels are treated differently from goods for resale; see barrel shipping to Nigeria and duty.
  • Prohibited items. Publish a list of what you will not carry and check every box against it.

Customer records

Keep a record of each sender and recipient, with ID seen, contents declared and value, and a photo of the packed box. It protects you in claims and helps your agent answer customs questions quickly.

Insurance and customer terms

RiskWhat covers itPut in your terms
Loss or damage in transitCargo insuranceDeclared value, claim window, what is excluded
Injury on your premisesPublic liabilityDrop-off rules
Delay at portUsually uninsuredNo delivery date promise, only estimates
Prohibited or misdeclared goodsNot insurableCustomer liable; right to open and inspect

Cargo insurance for goods moving with Nigeria covers what policies do and do not pay. If you serve small shops, consolidated cargo for small shops explains how they use it.

A worked example of a per-kilo price

Example only. You pay £2,400 for space on a sea consolidation carrying 1,200 kg of your customers' boxes, plus £600 to your Lagos agent for clearing and local delivery, plus £300 for packing materials and insurance. Cost is £3,300 ÷ 1,200 kg = £2.75 per kg. A price of £3.50 per kg leaves £0.75 per kg, or £900 on the shipment, before rent, staff and claims. Revisit the price every shipment, because freight and clearing costs move.

Where Pryme fits

Customers pay you in pounds or dollars; your Lagos agent wants naira. A Pryme Business Account holds both, Swap converts when you choose (the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve), and invoicing gives each customer a numbered invoice for their box.

Questions people ask

Do I need a licence to run a cargo business to Nigeria from the UK?

There is no single licence, but you need the usual business registration, an EORI number and export declarations for consignments, plus any local premises permits. The Nigerian clearing side is handled by a registered agent.

Can a freight forwarder abroad register with CRFFN?

CRFFN's rules, as reported by BusinessDay, describe registered practitioners as having their principal place of business in Nigeria, so most businesses abroad partner with a registered Nigerian agent.

Who pays duty on cargo to Nigeria?

Whoever your terms say. Agree it in writing with both the customer and the Nigerian agent before shipping, including terminal charges and demurrage.

Does food in a cargo box need SONCAP?

No. SONCAP exempts food, but food for resale has NAFDAC and other rules on the Nigerian side.
