Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Shipping barrels to Nigeria: duty and what is allowed

What Nigeria Customs charges on a barrel of family goods, the $300 de minimis rule, restricted foods and medicines, and what to pack instead.

The short answer

A barrel shipped to family in Nigeria is cleared by Nigeria Customs like any other consignment: duty and levies are charged on the value unless an exemption applies. Since 8 September 2025, goods worth $300 or less, including passenger baggage, are exempt from duties and related taxes for up to four importations a year if they are not prohibited or restricted, according to the Customs Service Board's statement.

How Customs treats a barrel

A barrel sent by sea or air cargo through a shipper is not accompanied baggage. It arrives as a consignment, the shipper or its Nigerian agent declares it, and Nigeria Customs assesses duty on its value. Used household goods belonging to someone moving home are treated differently from new goods sent as gifts.

The $300 de minimis threshold

The Nigeria Customs Service Board approved a de minimis threshold of $300 at its meeting on 2 September 2025, effective 8 September 2025, under sections 5 and 158 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023. The statement, published by the Federal Ministry of Information, says:

  • Goods valued at or below $300 are exempt from customs duties and related taxes.
  • It covers express shipments, e-commerce consignments, low-value imports and passenger baggage.
  • Prohibited and restricted items are excluded.
  • The exemption is limited to four importations a year (the statement does not say whether per person or per address).
  • Invoice manipulation to get under the threshold can lead to forfeiture and arrest.

A full barrel of new clothes, toiletries and food will usually be worth more than $300, so expect it to be assessed. Splitting one family's goods into many small barrels to stay under the threshold runs into the four-a-year limit, and Customs warns that undervaluing to qualify can lead to forfeiture.

What is restricted or prohibited

Nigeria's import prohibition list sits on the Customs website. FIDI Africa's customs guide for household goods (last updated 10 October 2023) summarises items that commonly cause trouble in household shipments. It is an industry guide, not the law, so check the current Customs list before packing:

  • Pork, beef, birds' eggs, and frozen poultry.
  • Refined vegetable oils (linseed, castor and olive oil excepted), retail-pack sugar, cocoa products, retail-pack spaghetti and noodles, retail-pack fruit juice, and some soft drinks and beer.
  • Many common medicines, including paracetamol and metronidazole.
  • Retail-pack soaps and detergents, footwear and bags, carpets, used tyres, and used fridges, freezers and air conditioners.
  • Firearms, air rifles, exotic animals and birds.

How duty is worked out

DHL's Nigeria duty guide (June 2026) sets out the structure: duty on the CIF value (cost, insurance, freight) converted at the CBN rate on the assessment date, plus an ECOWAS levy of 0.5% of CIF, a CISS of 1% of FOB, a surcharge of 7% of the duty, and VAT at 7.5% on CIF plus duty and levies. The duty rate depends on each item's tariff code.

Worked example

Example only, using DHL's structure and an assumed 20% duty rate. Goods worth ₦600,000 FOB, freight ₦150,000, insurance ₦10,000, so CIF ₦760,000.

ChargeBasisAmount
Duty20% of CIF₦152,000
Surcharge7% of duty₦10,640
ETLS0.5% of CIF₦3,800
CISS1% of FOB₦6,000
VAT7.5% of (CIF + charges above)₦69,933
Total₦242,373

Shippers often quote an all-in clearing fee instead. Ask what it includes and whether duty is extra. Where the receiver is asked for more money at collection, ask for the Customs assessment notice showing the duty, so you can see what was paid to Customs and what was the agent's fee.

Moving home is different

FIDI's guide says returning Nigerians may clear used personal effects without duty if they have lived abroad for at least nine months without interruption, the goods arrive within about two months of their return, and each item has been in use for at least six months. You need your original passport, a signed packing list and a TIN. Brand-new goods and new furniture are dutiable. Confirm the conditions with the Customs command at your port before you ship.

Older figures still circulate: in October 2019 a Customs spokesman told The Guardian that passengers' personal effects should not exceed ₦50,000 in value. The 2025 de minimis rule is the newer statement.

Steps before you ship

  1. Make an itemised packing list with honest values.
  2. Remove anything on the prohibition or restricted lists, especially food and medicines.
  3. Ask the shipper for a written quote that separates freight, clearing and duty.
  4. Give the receiver your packing list and the shipper's tracking reference.
  5. Keep receipts for new items in case Customs queries values.

For a small business shipping stock rather than gifts, see consolidated cargo for a small shop. For parcels to customers, see delivering online orders into Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

Sometimes it is cheaper to send money than goods. With a Pryme account you can convert and send naira to family, so they can buy rice and oil locally without duty or shipping. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. In Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, family can also spend at grocery merchants in Spaces.

Questions people ask

Is there duty on barrels sent to Nigeria?

Yes, unless an exemption applies. Goods worth $300 or less are exempt for up to four importations a year under the September 2025 de minimis rule, if they are not prohibited or restricted.

Can I send rice and vegetable oil in a barrel to Nigeria?

Retail-pack and refined food items are among the restricted goods listed in industry guides, and refined vegetable oil is named. Check the Customs list and ask your shipper before packing.

Can I send medicines to my parents in a barrel?

Many common medicines, including paracetamol, are listed as restricted. Sending medicines in a barrel risks seizure. Ask a pharmacist in Nigeria about local supply instead.

Do returning Nigerians pay duty on household goods?

Used personal effects can clear duty-free if conditions are met, such as nine months abroad and items used for six months, according to FIDI's guide. New goods are dutiable.
