Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

Getting a car loan in Australia with no credit history

New to Australia and need a car? What lenders look at when your credit file is empty, how your visa affects the answer, and how to compare the full cost.

The short answer

You can get a car loan in Australia without a local credit history, but the lender has less to go on, so it leans harder on your income, your bank statements, your visa and the size of your deposit. An empty credit file is not a bad file; what hurts is a string of rejected applications, because every application is recorded on your credit report.

Most Nigerians who arrive in Australia hit the same wall within a few months: the job is in an outer suburb, public transport does not reach it well, and a car becomes a need rather than a want. Then the first lender asks about your credit history and you have none. This guide explains what an Australian lender actually checks, why your visa matters, and how to avoid making your position worse while you wait for a history to build.

Why an empty credit file is a problem, and why it is not a black mark

Australian credit reports are held by credit reporting bodies. ASIC's Moneysmart service names Experian and Equifax and notes that each may hold different information about you. A report shows your personal details, the credit products you have held in the last two years, your repayment history for the last two years, defaults, credit applications, and court judgments or bankruptcies. Scores run from 0 to 1,000 or 0 to 1,200 depending on the bureau.

When you have just arrived, most of those fields are blank. Your Nigerian repayment record does not carry over, because Nigerian bureaus and Australian bureaus are separate systems. A lender therefore sees a thin file: no evidence that you repay on time, but also no evidence that you do not. That is a different situation from a file with missed payments, and many lenders treat it differently. Our guide to building a credit history as a new migrant covers the slow work of filling it in.

What lenders check when there is no history

With little on the credit file, a lender looks for other evidence that you can and will repay. Expect to be asked for most of these:

  • Income and employment. Recent payslips, an employment contract, how long you have been in the job, and whether the role is permanent, contract or casual. A probation period can count against you with some lenders.
  • Bank statements. Usually several months from your Australian account, showing salary arriving and how you spend. This is why opening an account early matters; see opening a bank account as a new arrival.
  • Living expenses and other debts. Rent, childcare, money you send home and any loans or cards, including ones still running in Nigeria.
  • Identity and visa. Passport, visa grant notice and proof of address. Lenders often run the same identity checks as banks; our note on the 100-point ID check explains what documents usually work.
  • Deposit and the car itself. A larger deposit lowers the amount at risk, and a secured loan uses the car as security, so its age and value matter.

How your visa changes the answer

Visa type is one of the first filters. Banks set their own rules on which visas they accept for which products. As one example of how specific these rules are, Commonwealth Bank says it cannot open its new-arrival accounts for holders of visitor visas 600, 601 and 651, while it does accept other migrants before or after arrival. Lending rules are usually stricter than account rules.

For permanent residents the visa question mostly falls away and the application is judged on income and credit like anyone else's. For temporary visa holders, such as skilled workers, graduates or partners at the temporary stage, many lenders want the loan term to end before the visa does, or will only lend on some visas. Ask the lender, before you apply, whether your subclass is accepted and whether the remaining time on your visa limits the term. That question costs nothing; a declined application leaves a record.

Secured, unsecured and dealer finance

Secured car loan
The car is security for the loan. Rates are usually lower than unsecured loans, but the lender usually sets rules on the car's age and value, and can repossess it if you default.
Unsecured personal loan
Not tied to the car, so it can be used for an older or private-sale vehicle. Usually costs more because the lender carries more risk.
Dealer finance
Arranged at the car yard, often with a third-party lender. Convenient, but compare the full cost and check any add-ons such as insurance products folded into the loan.
Balloon payment
A lump sum due at the end that lowers monthly repayments but leaves a large final bill. Factor it into the total cost.

Worked example: what the rate does to the total cost

Example only, with illustrative rates, not offers. A $20,000 loan over five years (60 monthly repayments) with no fees and no balloon:

Illustrative rateMonthly repaymentTotal repaidTotal interest
10% a year$424.94$25,496.45$5,496.45
15% a year$475.80$28,547.92$8,547.92

A thin credit file can push you towards the higher end, which on these figures costs about $3,050 more over the life of the loan. Fees, insurance and any balloon add to that. Ask each lender for the comparison rate and the total amount payable, not just the headline rate, and compare like with like.

What to check before you apply

  1. Get your free credit report. Moneysmart says you can get one free every three months; check it for errors, which you can have fixed free.
  2. Ask whether your visa and remaining visa time are accepted, before submitting anything.
  3. Apply to one lender at a time. Each application is listed on your report, and Moneysmart lists the number of applications among the factors that affect your score.
  4. Bring three to six months of Australian bank statements showing regular salary.
  5. Work out a deposit. Even a modest one reduces the amount and can widen your options.
  6. Compare total cost, including fees and any balloon, across at least two offers.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not lend for cars in Australia. Where it helps is the money around the decision: if you are bringing savings from Nigeria towards a deposit, you can hold naira and dollars in one multicurrency account and convert with Swap when you choose. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Can I get a car loan in Australia on a temporary visa?

Often yes, but not with every lender or on every visa. Lenders set their own lists of accepted visas and may limit the term to the time left on your visa. Ask before applying so you do not collect a declined application on your file.

Does my Nigerian credit history count in Australia?

Not directly. Australian lenders check Australian credit reporting bodies such as Experian and Equifax, which do not hold your Nigerian record. Some lenders may look at overseas evidence informally, but you should not rely on it.

How many car loan applications should I make?

As few as possible, ideally one at a time. Every application is recorded on your credit report and the number of applications is one of the factors that affects your score.

Is dealer finance easier to get with no credit history?

It can be more convenient, but it is still a credit application with its own checks. Compare the total cost with a bank or credit union loan and check for add-on products before you sign.
