Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Buying MTN Nigeria or Dangote Cement shares from the UK

How a UK resident buys large NGX shares such as MTN Nigeria or Dangote Cement: the broker account, CSCS, settlement, costs and getting money back.

The short answer

MTN Nigeria and Dangote Cement are listed on the Nigerian Exchange, so from the UK you buy them through an NGX stockbroker that opens a CSCS account for you, funded in naira. Trades settle two business days after the trade (T+2) since November 2025. Costs on a buy include brokerage of 0.75% to 1.35%, a 0.3% SEC fee and 0.08% stamp duty, plus VAT on some items.

For many Nigerians in the UK, the first NGX shares they consider are the biggest names: the telecoms operator MTN Nigeria and the cement maker Dangote Cement. Both trade on the Nigerian Exchange in naira. A UK platform will not usually let you buy them, so you need the Nigerian route. This guide covers the steps, the costs on each trade and how money comes back.

Step 1: open an NGX broker account

Choose a stockbroker that is a dealing member of NGX and confirm its registration on SEC Nigeria's register of operators. CSCS, the central securities depository, says individuals open their CSCS account through an accredited stockbroker and that each investor keeps one unique Clearing House Number (CHN), even with several brokers. CSCS lists your BVN and bank account number among the details it needs. If you live abroad, a Non-Resident BVN, which NIBSS issues through nrbvn.com within 72 hours of approval, may be the practical way to meet that requirement. The full document list is in opening an NGX broker account from the UK.

Step 2: fund in naira

Brokers take naira into their client account. From the UK you can send pounds and have them converted, or convert first and send naira. Ask the broker for its client account details in writing and confirm by phone before the first payment. See funding a Nigerian stockbroker from the UK.

Step 3: place the order and settle

You tell the broker the share, quantity and price limit. NGX's market structure page gives trading hours of 9.30 to 14.30. CSCS says Nigeria moved from T+3 to T+2 settlement on 28 November 2025, so a Monday trade settles on Wednesday, when the shares arrive in your CSCS account. Shares are held electronically; CSCS offers an online portfolio view you can register for.

What each trade costs

NGX feenone listed0.3%
CSCS feenone listed0.3%

Trade alert₦4₦4

These are from NGX's published market structure page; Bamboo's fee page (3 September 2026) adds that 7.5% VAT applies to brokerage and SEC fees on buys and to NGX, CSCS and brokerage fees on sells. Your broker's contract note shows the actual charges.

Worked example

Example only. Emeka in Birmingham buys ₦1,000,000 of shares at 1.35% brokerage. Brokerage is ₦13,500, the SEC fee ₦3,000, stamp duty ₦800 and the alert ₦4, a total of ₦17,304. VAT at 7.5% on brokerage and the SEC fee (₦16,500) adds ₦1,237.50, so the buy costs ₦18,541.50 in charges. Selling the same value later costs more, because NGX and CSCS each charge 0.3% on sales.

Dividends and getting money back

  • Dividends are paid by the company's registrar to the Nigerian bank account on your record; CSCS directs dividend claims to registrars.
  • Nigerian withholding tax is deducted before the dividend is paid; the UK side is covered in NGX dividends and UK tax.
  • Sale proceeds go to your broker account and then to your Nigerian bank account.
  • Converting to pounds is a separate step with its own rate and fee.

For the choice between reinvesting and moving dividends home, see NGX dividends: reinvest or move to the UK.

Keeping track of your shares from abroad

Your broker shows your holdings, but CSCS holds the official record. CSCS says you can register for an online portfolio view. Two things need you in person, which matters if you live in the UK: CSCS says a stock position statement requires biometric capture at a CSCS office, and biometrics are compulsory for transfers between brokers. If you think you might move to a different broker later, plan it for a trip home. Outside Lagos and Abuja, CSCS says ID can be notarised through your broker.

CSCS's charges page (effective 1 January 2026) lists ₦1,000 for a stock position statement and ₦3,000 per inter-member transfer request, plus 7.5% VAT. If you have lost track of old shares, CSCS says a global search can be run at its Lagos or Abuja office with valid ID, or requested through your broker.

Before you buy

  • Read the company's latest results and announcements on NGX, not social media tips.
  • Large companies can still be thinly traded on some days; check volumes.
  • Your return in pounds depends on the naira as well as the share price.
  • Keep every contract note for UK Capital Gains Tax.

Where Pryme fits

With Pryme you hold pounds and naira in one account, convert with Swap when you choose and send naira to your broker; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.
