Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

Buying a car for family in Nigeria from Australia

Buying a car for parents or siblings in Nigeria from Australia: buy locally or ship, checking customs and plates, paying dealers safely, and registration.

The short answer

For most families, buying in Nigeria from a dealer or private seller is quicker than shipping from Australia, but check the car before paying: verify customs duty with the Nigeria Customs Service's VIN check, check the plate with FRSC, and pay the dealer's business account only after inspection and with a receipt. Register the car (or transfer ownership) in the name of the person who will use it, with their NIN.

A car for ageing parents, or for a sibling starting work, is a frequent gift from Nigerians in Australia. The decision has two parts: where the car comes from, and how to pay without being cheated by a seller you cannot meet.

Buy locally or ship from Australia?

Buy in NigeriaShip from Australia
SpeedDays to weeksMonths, with shipping and clearing
Costs to addInspection, registration, transfer of ownershipFreight, clearing agent, import duty and levies, port charges, then registration
Paperwork riskSeller's papers may be incompleteClearing must be done properly or the car cannot be registered
Parts and servicingModels common in Nigeria are easier to maintainAustralian-spec models may need parts shipped

Shipping can make sense for a specific vehicle, but Nigeria has rules on vehicle imports that change; see exporting used cars from Australia to Nigeria before you plan it. The rest of this guide is about buying in Nigeria.

Checks before you pay

  1. Customs status. The Nigeria Customs Service's Customs Verification Management System lets you enter a vehicle's VIN and pay a ₦15,000 verification fee by local or international card to see the vehicle's status and whether duty was paid, according to The Guardian's October 2025 report. Legit.ng's 2026 guide lists the VIN tool at cvms.nigeriatradehub.gov.ng.
  2. Plate and registration. Legit.ng also points to FRSC's plate check (nvis.frsc.gov.ng) and the VREG registration-status check.
  3. Mechanical inspection. Send a mechanic you trust, not one the seller recommends. Ask for photos of the VIN on the chassis and on the dashboard, and check they match the papers.
  4. Papers. For a used car: proof of ownership, vehicle licence, customs papers for a first registration, and the seller's ID. The seller's name should match the papers.

Paying a dealer safely from Australia

  • Pay a registered business's account, not a salesperson's personal account. Check the business on CAC; see verifying a Nigerian company.
  • Pay only after inspection, and against a written invoice that names the car by VIN.
  • For larger sums, agree a deposit to hold the car and the balance on handover, with your relative present.
  • Get a sales receipt and a signed change-of-ownership document on handover.

Fraud on car sales often uses urgency ("another buyer is coming") and photos of cars that do not exist. Never pay the full price for a car nobody you trust has seen.

If a relative is choosing while you pay

Often a brother or uncle in Nigeria finds the car and you pay. Agree the budget ceiling, the models you will consider and the checks that must be done before any money moves. Ask for the VIN, the customs check result and the mechanic's report in writing or by photo, and pay the seller directly rather than sending the full price to your relative. That protects them too: if anything goes wrong, nobody can say they kept the money.

Insurance

Ask an insurer for a quote before you buy, as the cost differs by car value and use, and check what cover the state requires before the car is registered and driven.

Registration and running costs

Register the car in the name of the person who will drive it, or transfer ownership into their name. The Mandatory Use of NIN Regulations 2017, as summarised by Templars, require a NIN for vehicle purchase, registration and change of ownership, so your relative will need theirs. Vehicle licences are a state matter. Lagos's Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, in its June 2025 price list, set annual vehicle licence fees by engine size, from ₦1,250 for engines under 1.6 litres to ₦3,125 for engines over 3.0 litres; other states and other documents (roadworthiness, insurance) cost more, so ask for the full current list. If the car has tinted windows, a police tinted-glass permit applies; The Guardian reported in 2025 that it costs ₦16,000 per vehicle and is renewed yearly.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

Example only: a used saloon priced at ₦14,000,000. Customs VIN check ₦15,000; mechanic inspection ₦30,000; change of ownership and licences, say ₦150,000 (check the state's list); first service ₦120,000. Total to budget: 14,000,000 + 15,000 + 30,000 + 150,000 + 120,000 = ₦14,315,000.

After the purchase

Agree who pays fuel, servicing and insurance renewals. A car that is a gift can become a monthly cost; decide now whether it comes out of your parents' allowance or separately (see setting up a monthly allowance).

Where Pryme fits

With naira in a Pryme account you can pay a dealer's business account directly from Australia with Send once the inspection is done, and generate a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai for the purchase (receipts). Converting from dollars, pounds or euros, the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

How do I check a car's customs duty in Nigeria?

Use the Nigeria Customs Service's VIN verification system; The Guardian reported a ₦15,000 fee payable by local or international card.

Is it cheaper to ship a car from Australia to Nigeria?

It depends on the car. Shipping adds freight, clearing, duty and port charges and takes months, so compare the landed cost with local prices.

Whose name should the car be registered in?

The person who will use it. They will need their NIN for registration or change of ownership.

How do I pay a Nigerian car dealer safely from abroad?

Pay the dealer's business account only after an independent inspection, against an invoice naming the VIN, and get a receipt.
