Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Business

Can you open a business account without CAC registration?

A bank business account needs CAC papers, but a personal account can take trade payments. Here are the tier limits and the risks before you rely on it.

The short answer

A business (corporate or enterprise) account at a Nigerian bank is opened in a registered name, so banks ask for CAC registration documents. Without them, most traders receive customer payments into a personal account, which works but is capped by its KYC tier, carries your personal name, and mixes business and personal money. Registering a business name with CAC costs ₦20,000 for registration under CAC's fee schedule of 29 May 2025, plus ₦1,000 for name reservation.

Why banks ask for CAC documents

A business account is held in the name of the business. The bank has to prove that name exists and who controls it, so its checklist starts with the registration certificate. Access Bank's corporate account page, for example, lists the Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration, the Memorandum and Articles, CAC filings, a board resolution, evidence of address, references, and an ID and BVN for each signatory. A business name account needs the business name certificate and the proprietor's details in place of the company papers. Without a registered name there is nothing for the account to be opened in, which is why banks will not open one.

If your plan is to register soon, our guide to opening a business name account lists the papers, and why the account name must match the CAC name explains a common snag.

Using a personal account for trade: what the limits are

Plenty of small traders, caterers and online sellers take payment into a personal account. That is lawful and common, but the account's KYC tier sets how much it can hold and receive. UBA's savings page, checked in October 2026, gives a clear example.

UBA accountKYC neededLimits stated
Savings Lite (Tier 1)Passport photo, biodata, BVNMaximum single deposit ₦50,000; maximum cumulative balance ₦300,000
UBA Savings Account (Tier 3)Form, valid ID, passport photo, utility bill from the last three monthsNo tier cap stated; minimum opening ₦2,000

Other banks publish their own tier figures, so check yours. A trader whose account is still at Tier 1 will find payments bouncing once the balance cap is reached. Our explainer on KYC tiers 1, 2 and 3 covers how to upgrade. Note too that under CBN instant payment rules effective 1 July 2026, as reported by Proshare, the maximum transfer threshold for individuals is ₦25 million, below the ₦250 million corporate ceiling.

The risks of running a business through a personal account

  • Trust and fraud checks. Customers see your personal name, not a business name, when they confirm the account. Some will hesitate, and it makes impersonation easier for anyone copying your page.
  • Mixed money. Personal spending and sales sit together, so you cannot easily see profit, prepare accounts or show a lender clean figures.
  • Statements for tenders and loans. Corporate clients, tender boards and lenders often ask for statements in the business name. A personal statement may not count.
  • Monitoring. Banks must monitor inflows and outflows for fraud under the 2026 instant payments rules. Heavy trade traffic on a personal account can prompt questions, and your bank may ask you to move to a business account.
  • No separation of liability. Even with a business name, the owner is personally responsible for its debts. Only a limited company is a separate legal person, so registration type matters.

Worked example: what Tier 1 does to a busy week

Example only. Ngozi sells fabric online and still uses a Tier 1 account with a ₦300,000 balance cap. Her balance on Monday is ₦180,000. On Tuesday three customers pay ₦45,000, ₦60,000 and ₦40,000.

  1. First payment: ₦180,000 + ₦45,000 = ₦225,000, accepted.
  2. Second payment: ₦60,000 exceeds the ₦50,000 single-deposit limit on a Savings Lite-type account, so it may fail outright.
  3. Third payment: ₦225,000 + ₦40,000 = ₦265,000, accepted, leaving only ₦35,000 of room before the cap.

Upgrading the tier fixes the caps. Registering a business name fixes the name, the statements and the separation of money. For many traders, both together make sense.

Steps if you are still unregistered

  1. Keep one personal account only for sales, so trade money is at least separated from household spending.
  2. Upgrade that account to the tier your sales need, using the bank's upgrade route (usually ID, a recent utility bill and BVN or NIN linkage).
  3. Give receipts that show what was bought, the amount and the date, so customers have a record even though the account name is personal.
  4. Keep a simple monthly record of takings and costs; it becomes the starting point for accounts once you register.
  5. Register a business name when sales are steady, then open the business account and move collections across, telling regular customers the new details in writing.

Moving later is cheaper than it looks, but the switch causes confusion if customers keep paying the old account. Announce the change more than once, and keep the old account open for a while so stray payments are not lost.

What registration costs and takes

CAC's New Schedule of Fees (Gazette No. 92, Vol. 112, 29 May 2025) lists ₦1,000 for name reservation and ₦20,000 for business name registration including certified true copies of the registration documents. After registration, a business name must file annual returns; the same schedule sets a one-off ₦5,000 penalty and ₦100 per day for late returns. Many banks also ask for a Tax Identification Number, and some sectors need SCUML registration as well.

Where Pryme fits

If you are not ready to register, a Pryme Personal Account can be opened from any country and holds naira, dollars, pounds and euros, with local details for each. When you register, the documents for a Pryme Business Account are listed in our guide to opening one, and you can start here.

Questions people ask

Can I open a business account with only a business name idea?

No. A bank opens a business account in a registered name, so you need CAC registration first. Until then, use a personal account at a high enough KYC tier.

Is it illegal to receive business payments into my personal account?

Nothing in the CBN tier rules stops a personal account receiving trade payments, but the tier limits apply and your bank may ask you to open a business account if the activity is heavy. This is information, not legal advice.

How much is CAC business name registration?

CAC's fee schedule dated 29 May 2025 lists ₦1,000 for name reservation and ₦20,000 for registration, including certified copies. Check the CAC portal for the current fee before paying.

Why do my customers' transfers keep failing?

If your account is at Tier 1, you may have hit the single-deposit or balance cap. UBA's Tier 1 account, for example, is capped at ₦50,000 per deposit and ₦300,000 in balance.
