Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Building in phases from the US: protecting each stage payment

Pay a Nigerian builder by stage, not in advance. How to tie each release to verified work, use a registered quantity surveyor, and keep receipts.

The short answer

When you build in Nigeria from the US, pay in stages tied to finished work, not in advance: agree a priced bill of quantities, release each payment only when the stage is verified by someone independent of the builder (ideally a quantity surveyor registered with QSRBN), and get dated photos, materials receipts and a written acknowledgement for every payment. Keep a retention back until completion and pay into a business account, never cash to an individual.

Why stage payments go wrong from abroad

Most losses follow the same pattern. The builder asks for a large sum to "buy materials before prices rise", photos arrive of blocks that may be on someone else's site, and the next request comes before the last stage is finished. From the US you cannot walk the site, so the payment structure has to do the checking for you.

Set up the project before the first payment

  1. Get approved plans. In the FCT, for example, the development control department says plans must be prepared by registered town planners, architects and engineers bearing their seals, and that the approved plan and development permit must be kept on site. Each state has its own planning authority and rules.
  2. Commission a bill of quantities (BOQ): every item priced, so stage costs can be checked line by line.
  3. Sign a written contract that lists the stages, what "complete" means for each, the price, the timetable and what happens if work is late or defective.
  4. Appoint an independent checker. The Quantity Surveyors (Registration, etc.) Act makes it an offence for an unregistered person to practise as a quantity surveyor for reward, and QSRBN keeps the register, so ask for the registration number and check it.
  5. Open a dedicated account for the project so every naira in and out is visible.

A stage plan you can adapt

The percentages below are an example for a ₦60,000,000 bungalow, not an industry standard. Agree your own with the builder and QS.

StageExample shareExample amountRelease when
Mobilisation10%₦6,000,000Contract signed, site set out, insurance in place
Foundation to damp-proof course20%₦12,000,000QS confirms foundation and DPC complete
Walls to lintel20%₦12,000,000Walls up to lintel, columns cast
Roofing20%₦12,000,000Roof covered, verified on site
Finishes, services20%₦12,000,000Plaster, wiring, plumbing, windows done
Retention10%₦6,000,000Released after a defects period

Check: 10 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 10 = 100%, and ₦6m + 4 × ₦12m + ₦6m = ₦60m. Holding back the retention gives the builder a reason to come back and fix defects.

What proof to ask for at each stage

  • A QS valuation or site report stating what is complete and what it is worth against the BOQ.
  • Dated, geotagged photos and a short live video call walking the site, with a reference point you know, such as a neighbour's gate.
  • Receipts for major materials, matched to BOQ quantities.
  • A signed acknowledgement for each payment, stating the stage and amount.
  • For any variation, a written change order with the price agreed before work starts.

Materials prices move

Builders often justify advance payments by price rises. Prices do move: Legit.ng reported cement at ₦12,000 per 50kg bag from major makers in early September 2026, with July retail ranges of ₦12,500 to ₦15,000 in several cities. Rather than pay months ahead, agree in the contract how price changes are handled, or buy major materials yourself for delivery to site, with receipts in your name.

Red flags

  • Requests to pay into a personal account or a relative's account.
  • A new request before the QS has signed off the current stage.
  • Photos without dates, or that do not match the plan.
  • Resistance to an independent check.
  • Large "materials" sums with no supplier receipts.

A monthly routine that keeps you in control

Distance turns small problems into large ones because nobody tells you early. A fixed routine fixes that. Each month, ask for the same pack: the QS's short report against the programme, a list of materials delivered with receipts, photos from the same four corners of the site, and a statement of the project account. Compare spend against the BOQ line by line. If a stage is running over, agree the fix in writing before the next release, not after.

If the builder stops

Stage payments limit how much you can lose, but they do not stop a builder walking away. Keep the contract, the BOQ, every receipt and acknowledgement, and the QS reports in one folder, because they are what a new builder, a lawyer or a court will ask for. Have the QS value the work done to date before anyone else takes over, so you know what you have paid for and what remains. A retention held back and a clear termination clause give you room to bring in someone new without paying twice for the same stage.

Our related guides cover the contract with a Nigerian contractor and a pay-as-you-build cash-flow plan; borrowing against a US home to build is discussed in using a HELOC to build in Nigeria. For the Nigeria-side view, see building a house in Nigeria from abroad.

Where Pryme fits

You can fund a project from dollars with Swap when each stage is approved, and pay the builder's business account by transfer, so every release leaves a record. Ask the builder for a receipt for each payment; you can issue your own verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai that both sides can check.

Questions people ask

How should I pay a builder in Nigeria from abroad?

In stages tied to verified work, with a retention held back, paid to a business account with a receipt each time.

Do I need a quantity surveyor?

It is the most useful independent check. The Quantity Surveyors Act makes it an offence for unregistered people to practise for reward, so check QSRBN registration.

Should I pay for materials in advance?

Avoid large advances. Agree how price changes are handled, or buy major materials yourself with receipts in your name.

What proof should I get before releasing a payment?

A QS report, dated photos and video, materials receipts and a signed acknowledgement of payment.
