Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Budget vs actual reports for your Nigerian branch

How to set a monthly naira budget for a Nigerian operation, report actuals against it, and review the variances that matter from abroad in under an hour.

The short answer

Set the Nigerian budget in naira, month by month, with the exchange rate and inflation assumptions written at the top. Each month compare actual income and costs line by line, and ask for a written explanation only for variances above a set threshold, split into volume, price and exchange-rate effects. One page, a fixed date and a fixed threshold keep the review short.

Owners who run a Nigerian branch, subsidiary or shop from abroad usually get one of two things each month: nothing, or a spreadsheet so detailed nobody reads it. A budget-versus-actual report sits between those. It tells you whether the operation is doing what you agreed it would, where it is not, and why, without needing you to rebuild the accounts.

Build the budget in naira

TheCable's summary of the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026 says domestic transactions between Nigerian entities are to be priced and settled in naira, so the Nigerian operation's income and most of its costs are naira figures. Budget them in naira. Where some costs are paid in foreign currency (imported stock, software subscriptions, management fees to a parent), budget them in that currency and convert at a stated planning rate.

  • Planning rate: one exchange rate used for the whole budget year, written at the top and agreed with whoever approves the budget. Do not change it mid-year, even when the market rate moves a long way; the difference to actual rates is reported as its own variance.
  • Inflation assumption: the rise you expect in naira costs. The NBS put headline inflation at 14.63% year on year for September 2026, as reported by Voice of Nigeria (as at October 2026); use the latest NBS release when you set the budget.
  • Monthly phasing: spread annual figures across months to reflect seasons, such as December trading peaks or January school fees affecting staff advances.

The one-page report

Line (example)BudgetActualVarianceExplain?
Sales₦18,000,000₦16,650,000−₦1,350,000 (−7.5%)Yes
Cost of goods₦10,800,000₦10,490,000+₦310,000Yes, margin moved
Staff costs₦3,200,000₦3,200,0000No
Rent and service charge₦900,000₦900,0000No
Power and diesel₦600,000₦780,000−₦180,000 (−30%)Yes
Other overheads₦1,100,000₦1,060,000+₦40,000No
Operating profit₦1,400,000₦220,000−₦1,180,000Summary

Example only. The arithmetic: budget profit 18,000,000 − 10,800,000 − 3,200,000 − 900,000 − 600,000 − 1,100,000 = ₦1,400,000; actual 16,650,000 − 10,490,000 − 3,200,000 − 900,000 − 780,000 − 1,060,000 = ₦220,000. Favourable variances are shown with a plus sign and adverse with a minus.

Set thresholds so you read only what matters

Agree a rule such as: explain any line that is more than 10% or more than ₦250,000 away from budget, whichever is smaller. In the example, sales, cost of goods and power need explanation; staff, rent and other overheads do not. The manager writes two or three sentences per flagged line, not an essay, and says what will be done about it and by when.

Split the sales and cost variances

A sales shortfall can mean fewer units sold, lower prices, or both. Ask for the split:

  • Volume: (actual units − budget units) × budget price.
  • Price: (actual price − budget price) × actual units.
  • Exchange rate: for foreign-currency costs, (actual rate − planning rate) × foreign amount.

Example only. Budget 1,200 units at ₦15,000 = ₦18,000,000. Actual 1,110 units at ₦15,000 = ₦16,650,000. Volume variance = (1,110 − 1,200) × ₦15,000 = −₦1,350,000; price variance is nil. The question for the manager is why 90 fewer units sold, not whether prices were cut. On cost of goods, if $2,000 of imported stock was bought at ₦1,650 against a planning rate of ₦1,500 (both illustrative), the exchange variance is (1,650 − 1,500) × 2,000 = ₦300,000 adverse, which is useful to know before reading the rest of that line.

Keep the report consistent. Use the same line headings every month, matching the chart of accounts, so trends are visible across months. Add a short year-to-date column, because a variance that looks small in one month can add up over a quarter.

Running the review from abroad

  1. Fix a date, for example the 10th working day after month-end, for the report to arrive.
  2. Ask for the bank statements alongside, so the cash figures can be checked against the bank.
  3. Review in a short call with the manager; agree actions with owners and dates.
  4. Re-forecast the rest of the year each quarter, keeping the original budget for comparison.

See monthly reports from a Nigerian manager, cash flow forecasting with a volatile naira and which naira rate to use in the books.

Where Pryme fits

In a Pryme Business Account, the Finance agent can prepare the monthly budget-versus-actual page from the account's transactions and list lines over your threshold, and the Chief of Staff agent can collect the manager's explanations; a person reviews and signs off.

Questions people ask

How do I create a budget for a Nigerian branch?

Budget income and naira costs in naira by month, foreign-currency costs in their own currency at a stated planning rate, and write your inflation and exchange-rate assumptions at the top.

What variance threshold should I use?

A common approach is to explain lines more than 10% or more than a fixed naira amount from budget, whichever is smaller. Set the levels to suit your size.

Should I change the budget when the naira falls?

Keep the original budget and report the exchange-rate effect as a separate variance. Re-forecast quarterly if conditions change a lot.

What should a monthly management report from Nigeria include?

A one-page budget versus actual, short explanations for flagged lines, bank statements for the month and agreed actions.
