Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Remote monitoring of a Nigerian shop: cameras and records

How cameras and sales records together cut losses in a Nigerian shop you rarely visit, and what the Nigeria Data Protection Act expects of you.

The short answer

Cameras alone rarely stop losses; cameras matched to sales records do. Point cameras at the till, the stock room door and the entrance, then compare footage with the till and payment records at the times that look wrong. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you need a lawful basis (usually legitimate interest in security), visible notices, footage limited to what is necessary, a retention period and secure storage.

Owners running a shop in Nigeria from abroad often install cameras first and think about records later. The footage then becomes hours of video nobody watches. The better approach is to decide which losses you are trying to catch, place cameras to see those moments, and use your sales and payment data to tell you which minutes of footage to look at.

Where cameras earn their cost

Camera positionWhat it helps catchRecord to compare
Over the till or POSSales not rung up, cash pocketed, refunds without a customerTill report, POS settlement, transfers received
Stock room or warehouse doorGoods leaving without a saleStock count and delivery notes
EntranceCustomer numbers, opening and closing timesSales count per hour, staff rota
Delivery bayShort deliveries acceptedSupplier delivery notes and invoices

DLA Piper Africa's June 2025 note on workplace surveillance in Nigeria makes the data protection point the same way: cameras covering an entire workplace may be excessive if the real concern is a few high-value areas, so place them where the risk is.

Using records to find the footage worth watching

  • Hours with customers but few sales. If the entrance camera shows a busy hour and the till shows few transactions, watch the till camera for that hour.
  • Refunds and voids. Review every refund over a set amount against footage: was a customer present?
  • Cash share falling. If customers who used to pay by transfer are now recorded as cash, or cash takings drop while footfall holds, check what happened at the till.
  • Payments to staff accounts. A customer told to transfer to a staff member's personal account will show as a sale with no matching receipt into the business account.
  • Stock gaps. When a count shows missing stock, review stock-room door footage between the last two counts.

Worked example

Example only. Your Abuja shop's entrance camera counted about 140 customers on a Saturday. The till shows 61 sales and the POS and transfer records match the till, but cash takings are ₦85,000 lower than the average for the previous four Saturdays. You watch the till camera between 2pm and 4pm, the busiest stretch, and see several sales completed with cash with no receipt printed. That gives you a specific conversation to have, with evidence, rather than a general suspicion.

What the NDPA expects

Footage of identifiable people is personal data. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 applies:

  • Lawful basis (section 25). DLA Piper Africa says legitimate interest is usually the most suitable basis for workplace surveillance, balanced against staff privacy rights under section 37 of the Constitution. Security and crime detection are legitimate purposes.
  • Transparency (section 27). Tell staff in writing what is recorded, why, who sees it and how long it is kept. Display notices where customers can see them.
  • Minimisation and retention (section 24). Record only what you need and keep footage no longer than necessary; overwrite on a fixed cycle unless an incident needs it kept.
  • Security (section 39). Use strong passwords on the recorder and app, restrict who can view, and avoid sharing clips on WhatsApp groups.
  • Rights (section 34). People recorded can ask for access to footage of themselves.
  • Breaches (section 40). A leak of footage likely to risk people's rights must be reported to the NDPC within 72 hours.

DLA Piper also recommends a data privacy impact assessment before introducing monitoring. Do not place cameras in toilets, changing areas or places of rest. The NDPC's FAQs describe remedial fees of up to the greater of ₦2 million or 2% of annual gross revenue for most controllers, and higher for those of major importance.

A weekly review routine

  1. Each Monday, export last week's till report, POS settlements and transfer receipts.
  2. Flag the hours where footfall and sales do not match, every refund or void above your threshold, and any day where cash takings fall well below the usual level.
  3. Watch only the footage for those flags; ten to twenty minutes is usually enough.
  4. Note what you found and what you did, even when nothing was wrong.
  5. Raise concerns with the manager in writing with dates and times, and keep the clip for the incident.

Staff who know footage is checked against the records behave differently from staff who know nobody watches. The routine matters more than the camera count.

Using footage as evidence

If a case goes to court, CCTV footage is computer-generated evidence. Mondaq's May 2025 review of Nigerian authorities explains that section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011 sets conditions for admitting it, which can be shown with a certificate under section 84(4) or oral evidence from a person familiar with the system. Keep the original recording, note the date and time settings, and record who extracted the clip.

Where Pryme fits

Footage needs clean payment records to compare against. A Pryme Business Account, opened from any country, keeps customer transfers in the business account with clear references, and virtual accounts help you see what was paid where. For diverted payments specifically, see how to stop staff diverting customer payments, for stock, stock counts from abroad, and for the wider picture, preventing staff fraud from abroad.

Questions people ask

Is it legal to put CCTV in my shop in Nigeria?

Yes, for purposes such as security, but under the NDPA 2023 you need a lawful basis, notices, minimal and proportionate coverage, a retention period and secure storage.

Do I need to tell staff about cameras in Nigeria?

Yes. The NDPA requires you to tell people at collection what is recorded, why, who receives it and how long it is kept, and DLA Piper advises visible notices.

Can CCTV footage be used in a Nigerian court?

It is computer-generated evidence under section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011, provable by a section 84(4) certificate or by a person familiar with the system.

How long should I keep shop CCTV footage?

No longer than necessary for its purpose. Set a fixed overwrite cycle and keep clips only when an incident needs investigating.
