Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Everyday money

How to budget when your income is irregular

For traders, freelancers, artisans and commission earners: a method for budgeting when you never know what next month will bring.

The short answer

Budget from your lowest normal month, not your best one. Pay all income into a holding pot, pay yourself a fixed monthly amount from it, and keep the extra from good months to cover the lean ones.

Why irregular income needs a different method

A salaried worker can plan around one payday. A trader, freelancer, driver, tailor or sales agent paid on commission may earn three times as much in December as in February. Budgeting from an average hides the bad months; budgeting from a good month invites trouble. The goal is to turn uneven income into a steady personal salary.

Three steps to a steady personal salary

Step 1: find your floor

Look at the last 6 to 12 months of income. Ignore one-off windfalls and find the lowest amount you earned in a normal month. That is your floor. Your core budget must fit inside it.

If you have less than six months of records, use the lowest month you have and be cautious until you have more data.

Step 2: set up a holding pot

All income goes into one account first, not your spending account. From there you pay yourself a fixed amount on the same day each month, as if you were your own employer. Business owners should also keep business and personal money apart; our guide to getting paid in Nigeria covers collecting income cleanly.

Step 3: split each payment as it arrives

  • Tax: set aside a share if your income is taxable. See tax on self-employed and side income.
  • Business costs: stock, tools, fuel or subscriptions you must pay to keep earning.
  • Your salary: your fixed monthly amount, based on your floor.
  • Buffer: everything above that goes into a buffer pot for lean months.

A worked example

Example only. Bisi is a freelance designer. Over the past year, her monthly income after business costs ranged from ₦180,000 to ₦650,000. Her lowest normal month was ₦220,000, so she pays herself ₦220,000 a month.

MonthIncome after costsPaid to selfInto bufferBuffer balance
January₦480,000₦220,000₦260,000₦260,000
February₦220,000₦220,000₦0₦260,000
March₦180,000₦220,000−₦40,000₦220,000
April₦650,000₦220,000₦430,000₦650,000

In March she earned less than her salary, but the buffer covered the gap. Once the buffer holds three to six months of her salary, she can raise her monthly pay or start investing the extra.

Rules that keep it working

  1. Never raise your personal salary after one good month. Wait until the buffer is full.
  2. Pay fixed bills such as rent portions and school fees from your salary, not from the holding pot.
  3. Keep a list of what to cut first in a lean month, decided calmly in advance.
  4. Track income weekly, not just monthly, so a slow month is spotted early.
  5. Avoid borrowing to smooth income unless the cost is clear and the repayment fits your floor. Read what a loan really costs first.

Plan your lean-month cuts in advance

Decisions made in a panic are expensive. Write down, in a good month, what you will cut if income falls below your floor. Rank the list so you know exactly what goes first.

  1. Eating out and deliveries.
  2. Subscriptions and premium data plans.
  3. Non-urgent clothing and gadgets.
  4. Discretionary family support beyond the agreed basic amount, explained early to the people affected.
  5. Business spending that does not bring income within a month.

Having the list means a slow month becomes a set of known steps instead of a crisis. Review it every six months, because what feels essential changes as your work and family change.

Keep records for credit and tax

Irregular earners often struggle to show lenders, landlords or embassies what they earn. Keep income flowing through one account, issue receipts or invoices for work done and keep statements. Clear records make it easier to show income when you need to and to file your annual return correctly.

Seasonal earners and yearly costs

Seasonal earners

If your income follows a calendar, such as school uniform sellers before term, caterers in wedding season or traders in December, plan the year in advance. Estimate your yearly income, subtract business costs, divide by 12 and pay yourself that. The busy months fund the quiet ones.

Yearly costs on uneven income

Rent and school fees are hard for anyone, and harder when income swings. Treat them as fixed monthly bills inside your personal salary. If your floor is too low to cover them, set aside a fixed share of every good month, for example 20% of anything above your floor, into a separate pot that is only for rent and fees. That way big months pay for the obligations that do not wait.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account can act as your holding pot, with Naira Savings Boxes for the buffer and tax money, and rates shown in the app. If clients pay you in dollars, pounds or euros, you can hold each in a multicurrency account and use Swap only when you choose, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. Your Personal Assistant can prepare your monthly self-salary transfer for approval.

Questions people ask

How do freelancers in Nigeria budget?

Pay all income into one account, pay yourself a fixed amount based on your lowest normal month, and keep the extra as a buffer for slow months.

How much buffer should I keep with irregular income?

Aim for three to six months of your personal salary, more if your income swings sharply or depends on one client.

Should I use average income to budget?

No. Averages hide lean months. Use your lowest normal month for the core budget.

How do traders separate business and personal money?

Use a separate account for the business, pay yourself a fixed amount from it, and never spend stock money on household costs.
