Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Everyday money

How to budget on a Nigerian salary, step by step

A practical six-step method for planning your take-home pay in Nigeria, from fixed costs and rent to family support and saving.

The short answer

Start from your take-home pay, not your gross salary, then list fixed costs, set aside money for rent and saving on payday, and give the rest a weekly spending limit. Review it at the end of every month and adjust, because prices in Nigeria move faster than most budgets.

Start with the number that reaches your account

Most budgets fail on day one because they start from the salary in the offer letter. In Nigeria, PAYE tax, your 8% pension contribution and sometimes NHF are taken before you see a kobo, so work from the amount that lands in your account. If you are unsure what is being deducted, our guides to PAYE tax bands for 2026 explains each line on your payslip.

Also look at three months of bank statements before you plan anything. A budget built on what you think you spend is a wish list. A budget built on what you actually spent is a plan.

The six steps

  1. Write down take-home pay. Use the average of the last three months if it varies with overtime or allowances.
  2. List fixed monthly costs. Transport to work, electricity tokens, data and airtime, cable TV, school fees spread across months, loan repayments and any regular family support.
  3. Turn yearly costs into monthly ones. Rent, school fees, insurance and December travel are the costs that wreck Nigerian budgets. Divide each by 12 (or by the months left before it is due) and treat the result as a monthly bill.
  4. Pay yourself first. On payday, move your saving and your rent portion out of your spending account before anything else.
  5. Give the rest a weekly limit. Divide what is left for food, outings and small purchases by four or five weeks. Weekly limits are easier to keep than a monthly lump.
  6. Review at month end. Compare plan with reality, fix the lines that were wrong and carry the lesson into next month.

A worked example

Example only. Tunde takes home ₦450,000 a month in Lagos. His annual rent is ₦1,200,000 and his daughter's school fees are ₦270,000 a term (₦810,000 a year).

LineMonthly amount (example)Note
Rent (₦1,200,000 ÷ 12)₦100,000Set aside on payday
School fees (₦810,000 ÷ 12)₦67,500Set aside on payday
Transport₦45,000Fixed
Electricity, data, airtime, TV₦35,000Fixed
Family support₦30,000Agreed amount
Saving and emergency fund₦45,00010% of take-home
Food and household₦90,000₦22,500 a week
Personal and outings₦25,000Weekly limit
Buffer for price rises₦12,500Unplanned costs
Total₦450,000

The point is not the exact figures but the shape: about 37% of Tunde's pay is committed to rent and school fees before he buys food. Seeing that clearly is what makes the rest of the decisions easier.

Make the plan survive real life

Build in a buffer

Food prices in Nigeria have risen faster than the headline rate for much of the past few years. A small buffer line stops one expensive week from breaking the whole plan. Our article on what inflation means for your budget shows how to adjust lines each quarter.

Separate money by job

Keeping everything in one account makes it hard to know what is spare. Many people use one account for spending and separate pots for rent, fees and emergencies, so that money set aside for rent is not quietly spent on a weekend.

Plan for black tax openly

Family requests are a normal part of Nigerian life. Give them a line in the budget instead of treating each one as a surprise. Our guide to supporting family without going broke covers how to set that amount.

Keep an emergency fund

Without one, every surprise becomes a loan. Aim for at least a month of essential costs to start, then build from there. See how big your emergency fund should be.

When your income changes

A pay rise is the easiest moment to improve a budget, because you are not giving anything up. Before the new amount arrives, decide where the increase goes. A useful rule is to send at least half of every rise to saving or debt repayment and let the other half improve your daily life. That way your lifestyle grows more slowly than your income, and the gap becomes your safety net.

If income falls, through a job change or lost allowances, cut wants first, then review the largest needs: rent at renewal, school choices and transport. Tell the people who depend on you early so changes to family support are planned rather than sudden.

Common mistakes

  • Budgeting from gross salary instead of take-home pay.
  • Ignoring yearly costs until the landlord or school calls.
  • Saving only what is left at month end, which is usually nothing.
  • Setting limits so tight that the plan is abandoned in week two.
  • Not reviewing, so the same overspend repeats every month.

Pick a tool you will keep using

The best budgeting tool is the one you still use in month three. There are three common options, and each works if it matches your habits.

ToolGood forWatch out for
NotebookPeople who like writing things down; no data neededEasy to forget entries; no totals
SpreadsheetDetailed planners who like seeing the numbersTakes time to update; abandoned when busy
Separate accounts or potsPeople who prefer rules to trackingNeeds discipline not to move money back

Many people combine them: pots for the big commitments, and a quick weekly look at the statement for everything else. Whatever you choose, set a fixed time to review, such as the Sunday after payday.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account lets you split money by purpose using Naira Savings Boxes: a Flexible Box for the emergency fund, a Fixed Box for rent you will not touch until it is due, and so on, with rates shown in the app. You can pay electricity, data and TV bills from the same account, and your Personal Assistant (named Eva by default) can remind you of due dates and prepare transfers. It prepares; nothing moves until you approve. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. You can open an account from any country.

Questions people ask

How much of my salary should I save in Nigeria?

Start with what you can keep up every month, even 5% of take-home pay, and raise it when your income rises. Consistency matters more than the starting percentage.

How do I budget when rent is paid yearly?

Divide the annual rent by 12 and set that amount aside on every payday in a separate pot, so the lump sum is ready before the renewal date.

Is ₦200,000 a month enough to live on in Lagos?

It depends on rent, family size and commute. Write down your fixed costs first; if rent and transport take more than half, look at cheaper housing, shared costs or extra income.

What is the best budgeting method for beginners?

Pay yourself first, then use weekly spending limits for flexible costs. It needs no spreadsheet and works on most Nigerian salaries.
