Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to budget a ₦250,000 salary in Nigeria (worked example)

A worked ₦250,000 monthly budget for Nigeria, focused on the two lines that break it most often: power and transport costs.

The short answer

On ₦250,000 take-home, a workable example sets aside ₦55,000 a month for ₦660,000 yearly rent, spends ₦50,000 on food, ₦30,000 on transport and ₦22,000 on electricity and generator fuel, and saves ₦30,000 (12%). Power and transport are the lines to control, because both move with fuel prices.

The budget at ₦250,000

₦250,000 take-home lets a single adult rent a one-bedroom flat in many cities, eat reasonably and save. At this level two lines decide whether the month works: power and transport. Both move with fuel prices, both are hard to cut at short notice, and together they can take a fifth of pay. This guide builds the budget around controlling them.

The example below is labelled and assumes a single adult in a one-bedroom flat at ₦660,000 a year.

Line (example)MonthlyShareNote
Rent (₦660,000 a year, set aside monthly)₦55,00022%One-bedroom flat, example
Food₦50,00020%
Transport₦30,00012%Public transport or ride-share mix
Data and airtime₦8,0003%
Electricity (prepaid)₦12,0005%
Generator fuel and servicing₦10,0004%Where grid supply is poor
Family support₦20,0008%Fixed
Personal care and clothing₦10,0004%
Leisure₦15,0006%
Savings₦30,00012%12% of pay
Buffer₦10,0004%
Total₦250,000100%

Rent, food, transport, data and the two power lines total ₦165,000, or 66% of pay. Power and transport alone are ₦52,000, more than the savings line. A 20% rise in both would add ₦10,400 a month, which is the whole buffer and then some, so these are the lines to watch first.

Getting the power line right

Electricity spending has two parts in many Nigerian homes: prepaid units from the distribution company and fuel for a generator when supply is off. People usually budget for the first and forget the second.

  1. Check your meter history or vending receipts for the last three months and take the average spend on units.
  2. For the generator, note how many hours a day you run it and how much fuel that uses in a week, then multiply by the current pump price where you buy. Do not use last year's price. Fuel prices vary by state and filling station.
  3. Add servicing and repairs. A generator that breaks once a year is a cost even if it is not monthly; spread it across twelve months.
  4. Compare the total with alternatives you can afford, such as running the generator only at night, or a small inverter. An inverter is a large one-off cost, so treat it as a savings goal, not a monthly line.

Your electricity tariff depends on your supply band; NERC and your distribution company publish the current tariff. For a fuller picture of household bills, see the monthly utility budget guide.

Getting the transport line right

₦30,000 a month is about ₦1,360 a working day across 22 days. Whether that covers you depends on distance and mode.

  • Mixing modes. Using a ride-hailing car only for the leg with no reliable bus, and public transport for the rest, often costs much less than a car door to door.
  • Weekly top-up. Move a fixed weekly amount into your transport money. If it runs out on Thursday, you learn about the problem in week one rather than at month end.
  • Remote days. If your employer allows a day or two from home, each one saves a full day's fare, though it may add to power and data at home, so count both sides.

Our guide to budgeting for transport goes into the options.

The other trade-offs

Savings at 12%

₦30,000 is 12% of pay, a little below what is possible at ₦200,000 with a smaller flat. That is the cost of the one-bedroom flat and the generator. If saving matters more to you right now, a cheaper flat or a flat-share would move the rate back to 15% or more.

Family support

₦20,000 is 8% of pay. Sending it in a single transfer keeps fees down; since 1 January 2026 a ₦50 stamp duty is charged to the sender on each electronic transfer of ₦10,000 or more.

Tax relief on rent

From 1 January 2026, the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 allows a rent relief of 20% of annual rent, capped at ₦500,000. On ₦660,000 rent that is ₦132,000. Depending on your gross pay, your top slice of income is taxed at 15% or 18% under the new bands, so the relief could reduce tax by roughly ₦19,800 to ₦23,760 a year. Claim it through payroll. This is information, not tax advice.

What to check first

  1. Your last three months of electricity and fuel spending.
  2. Your real daily transport cost, including the occasional ride-hailing trip.
  3. Whether your rent set-aside will reach the full amount by the due date.
  4. Whether your emergency fund covers at least one month of essentials yet.

Where Pryme fits

Prepaid electricity, data and cable TV can be paid from a Pryme account (electricity), and the Personal Assistant can prepare a reminder before your units run low, for you to approve (Personal Assistant). Savings Boxes keep rent and emergency money apart from spending.

Questions people ask

How much should I budget for electricity on ₦250,000?

In this example ₦12,000 for prepaid units plus ₦10,000 for generator fuel and servicing. Use your own last three months of spending; it varies widely by area and supply band.

How much rent can I afford on a ₦250k salary?

Around a quarter of take-home, about ₦55,000 a month or ₦660,000 a year, keeps the other lines workable. Above a third, savings usually stops.

How much should I save on ₦250,000 a month?

Twelve to fifteen per cent, about ₦30,000 to ₦37,500, is realistic for a single person, depending on rent and power costs.

Do I get tax relief on rent in Nigeria?

From January 2026 the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 allows relief of 20% of annual rent, capped at ₦500,000, claimed in writing through your employer.
