Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to budget for transport costs in Nigeria

A practical way to work out your monthly commute cost, protect it on payday, plan for fare rises, and know when short-term credit helps.

The short answer

Work out your daily return fare, multiply by the days you travel, add a buffer for fare rises and one-off trips, and set that amount aside the day you are paid. Short-term credit such as Loans on Spaces can bridge a few days before payday, but it should not replace a transport budget.

Why transport is hard to budget

Transport is one of the largest regular costs for many Nigerian workers, and it is unpredictable. Fuel prices change, fares rise without notice, and a rainy day can push you from a bus to a ride-hailing car. The National Bureau of Statistics tracks this in its monthly Transport Fare Watch, which reports average fares for bus journeys within cities, between cities, okada, and other modes. Reading a recent edition gives you a sense of how fares in your state have moved.

Because the cost is spread across many small payments, it is easy to underestimate. A fare that seems small every morning becomes one of your biggest monthly bills.

Step 1: find your real monthly figure

  1. Write down every leg of a normal working day: home to bus stop, bus to work, and the same home. Include tricycle and okada legs.
  2. Note what you actually pay, not the official fare.
  3. Multiply by the number of days you travel in a month. Hybrid workers should use real office days.
  4. Add weekend trips: church or mosque, market, visiting family.
  5. Add a buffer of 10 to 20 percent for fare increases and the occasional ride-hailing trip.

Example only. Tunde lives in Mararaba and works in central Abuja.

ItemExample costPer month
Daily return commute₦2,800 × 22 days₦61,600
Weekend trips₦3,000 × 4₦12,000
Buffer (15%)₦11,040
Monthly transport budget₦84,640

Step 2: protect it on payday

The single most useful habit is to move the transport figure out of your spending money the day salary arrives. If it sits in your main balance, it competes with everything else. Some people buy a weekly or monthly pass where the operator offers one, which can also cost less per trip. Others move the money into a separate savings pot and release a week's worth at a time.

  • Weekly release: move one week of fares to your spending balance every Monday.
  • Pass or bundle: if your operator offers a pass, compare its cost per trip with daily fares.
  • Shared rides: splitting a car with colleagues can cost less than individual rides on some routes.

Whichever method you use, the point is the same: the money for getting to work is decided once, on payday, rather than every morning.

Review it every quarter

A transport budget set in January can be out of date by April. Every three months, compare what you actually spent with what you planned. If the gap keeps growing, the cause is usually one of three things: fares have risen, you are taking more ride-hailing trips than you think, or your office days have changed. Each has a different fix. Fare rises mean adjusting the budget and finding savings elsewhere; extra ride-hailing usually means leaving earlier or travelling with a colleague; changed office days mean recalculating the base figure.

Keep a short note of your actual weekly spend for two or three weeks before each review. Bank and app statements help, but cash fares paid to bus conductors and okada riders do not appear on any statement, so a quick note on your phone at the end of each day is often more accurate than memory.

Step 3: plan for the trips you cannot avoid

Most people also make two or three bigger trips a year: Christmas at home, a wedding, a burial. These are predictable even if the dates are not. Put a small amount aside each month, so a festive-season ticket is not a surprise. For a trip that comes up suddenly, read paying for an interstate trip with Loans on Spaces.

When credit helps, and when it hurts

Credit can help when the problem is timing: salary is a few days late or an unexpected bill took your fare money. It hurts when the problem is that transport costs more than your budget allows every month. In that case, borrowing adds a cost each month and the gap grows.

Where Pryme fits

In a Pryme Personal Account, a Flexible Savings Box can hold your transport money apart from everything else; see Savings Boxes. Your Personal Assistant, named Eva by default, can remind you to move the money on payday, and nothing moves without your approval. If you are offered a Loans on Spaces limit, you can pay transport operators that are Spaces merchants on credit after reading and accepting the agreement; see paying transport fares on credit.

Questions people ask

How much should I budget for transport monthly in Nigeria?

Add up your real daily fares, multiply by the days you travel, add weekend trips and a 10 to 20 percent buffer. The right figure depends on your route and city.

How can I reduce my transport cost to work?

Compare passes or bundles with daily fares, share rides with colleagues, and check whether a different route or mix of bus and walking is cheaper and safe.

Is it wise to borrow for transport?

Only for short timing gaps that you can repay from known income. If you run short most months, the budget needs fixing, not credit.

Where can I see current transport fares in Nigeria?

The National Bureau of Statistics publishes a monthly Transport Fare Watch with average fares by mode and state.
