Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund: who can apply

Who qualifies for the Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund, the loan sizes, the roles of FACE and BDC, and how to apply through the FACE portal.

The short answer

The Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund lends up to $250,000 to start-ups and existing for-profit small businesses in Canada that are majority (over 51%) Black-owned, where the applicant self-identifies as Black or Black-led, is at least 18, and is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; conventional refugees qualify for microloans only. FACE administers it, lending up to $100,000 itself with larger loans risk-shared with BDC, and applications start on the FACE loan portal.

For Nigerian-Canadian founders the Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund (BELF) is one of the few lending programmes designed around them. It is part of the federal Black Entrepreneurship Program and is run by the Federation of African Canadian Economics (FACE) with the Business Development Bank of Canada. The rules below come from the federal government's programme page, read in October 2026.

Who can apply

ConditionAs published
IdentitySelf-identify as Black or Black-led
OwnershipMajority, more than 51%, Black Canadian ownership
StatusCanadian citizen or permanent resident, or a legal entity owned and controlled by Canadian citizens; conventional refugees for microloans only
AgeAt least 18
BusinessStart-ups and existing for-profit small businesses in Canada

Two points trip people up. First, the ownership test is about the business, so a company where you hold 45% and a non-Black co-founder holds 55% does not meet it, however central you are. Second, the status condition excludes study and work permit holders; a founder on a work permit waiting for PR would need to wait.

Loan sizes and who lends

Overall maximum
Loans of up to $250,000
FACE
Can lend up to $100,000; above that, loans are risk-shared with BDC
BDC
Committed $130 million to extend capital to Black entrepreneurs, and shares underwriting
Microloans
$10,000 to $25,000 through Alterna Savings and Vancity, working with FACE, in Ontario and British Columbia

The page does not publish interest rates, terms or fees. Those are set in the loan offer, which you read and accept, or decline, before anything is drawn. Ask how the rate is expressed, whether it is fixed or variable, the term, and whether a personal guarantee is required.

How to apply

  1. Check the ownership and status conditions against your share register and immigration documents.
  2. Prepare a business plan, cash flow forecast and, for an existing business, financial statements and tax filings.
  3. Apply on the FACE loan portal, which the federal page describes as the electronic, initial intake for applicants.
  4. Respond to FACE's follow-up questions; larger requests also go through BDC's underwriting.

The fund began accepting applications on 31 May 2021. The federal page does not state whether intake is open today, so check the FACE portal before investing time in a full application.

Questions to ask before you accept an offer

  • What is the interest rate, and is it quoted annually, monthly or as a margin over a reference rate?
  • Is the rate fixed for the whole term, or can it change?
  • What is the total you will repay over the term, including any fees?
  • Is there a personal guarantee, and over what assets?
  • Can you repay early, and is there a charge for doing so?
  • What happens if a payment is late?

Write the answers next to your cash flow. A worked example, illustrative only: a $60,000 loan repaid at $1,200 a month for 60 months returns $72,000, so $12,000 is the cost of borrowing. Whether that is affordable depends on your weakest months, not your average one.

Worked example

Example only. Ngozi and her husband, both Nigerian-born permanent residents in Brampton, own 100% of a food-manufacturing company that has traded for two years. They need $150,000 for equipment. They meet the identity, ownership, status and age conditions. Because the amount is above $100,000, the loan would be risk-shared between FACE and BDC. Their friend Ade, on a work permit, wants $15,000 for a mobile repair business; he does not meet the status condition, and the microloans are limited to Ontario and British Columbia.

If BELF is not the right fit

Where Pryme fits

Businesses that buy ingredients or stock from Nigeria pay suppliers in naira. A Pryme Business Account holds NGN with local details alongside USD, GBP and EUR, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Who qualifies for the Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund?

Black or Black-led businesses with over 51% Black Canadian ownership, applicants aged 18+, who are citizens or PRs (conventional refugees for microloans only).

How much can I borrow from BELF?

Up to $250,000. FACE lends up to $100,000; larger loans are risk-shared with BDC. Microloans of $10,000 to $25,000 run in Ontario and BC.

Can a work permit holder apply for BELF?

Not as published; the status condition is citizenship or permanent residence, with conventional refugees eligible for microloans only.

How do I apply for the Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund?

Through the FACE loan portal, the initial intake for applicants.
