Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bill of lading for goods from Lagos to Canada: what to check

The bill of lading fields that decide customs release and insurance claims for a container from Lagos, the types of bill, and costly mistakes.

The short answer

Check that the bill of lading names you (or your bank's order) correctly as consignee, shows the right ports, container and seal numbers, a description, package count and weight that match your invoice and packing list, an on-board date, and no notes of damage. The bill is the receipt for your goods, the evidence of the shipping contract and, in its original negotiable form, the document that entitles you to collect them, so an error can delay release in Canada or weaken an insurance claim.

When a Nigerian supplier ships your container out of Lagos, the shipping line or freight forwarder issues a bill of lading. For a Canadian importer it is the single most important document in the file: your customs broker needs it, your insurer will ask for it, and if you are paying by letter of credit, your bank will check it line by line. Most importers glance at it. This is what to look at properly, ideally on the draft before the bill is issued.

What a bill of lading does

  • Receipt. The carrier confirms it received the goods, in the stated quantity and apparent condition.
  • Evidence of the contract of carriage. The terms on the bill, often on the back or by reference, govern liability.
  • Document of title. An original negotiable bill ("to order") controls who can collect the goods. Whoever holds the endorsed original can claim them at the port of discharge.

Types you will see

TypeWhat it means for you
Original negotiable bill ("to order")Goods released only against the original; used with letters of credit and when you need the supplier to keep control until paid
Straight billNames a specific consignee; not transferable by endorsement
Sea waybillNo original needed; the named consignee collects. Faster, but you lose the control an original gives
Telex or express releaseSupplier surrenders the originals in Lagos and the line releases at destination without them
House bill (from a forwarder) vs master bill (from the line)With a consolidator you get a house bill; the forwarder holds the master. Know which party releases your goods

The fields to check, line by line

  1. Shipper: your supplier's legal name, matching the commercial invoice.
  2. Consignee: your business's exact legal name and address, or "to order of" your bank under an LC. A misspelling can hold up release.
  3. Notify party: you or your customs broker, with a phone number and email.
  4. Port of loading (the Lagos port used) and port of discharge (for example Montréal or Halifax), and the final place of delivery if the carrier is moving it inland.
  5. Vessel and voyage, so your broker can track arrival.
  6. Container and seal numbers: these must match the container that arrives. A different seal number at destination is your first evidence that it was opened.
  7. Description of goods, number of packages, gross weight: consistent with the invoice and packing list. Customs and your insurer will compare them.
  8. Freight prepaid or collect: matching your Incoterm. If you bought CIF, it should be prepaid.
  9. Shipped on board date: the date the goods were loaded, which matters for LCs and for your supplier's export obligations.
  10. Clean or claused: a clean bill has no notes of damaged packaging or shortage. A claused bill is a warning, and most LCs will not accept it.
  11. Number of originals: usually a set of three; know who holds each.

Why it matters on the Nigerian side too

The bill's date is not only your concern. Mondaq's note on the CBN's January 2025 circular says Nigerian exporters' repatriation deadlines run from the bill of lading date, and the newer summary of the CBN's 2026 Foreign Exchange Manual gives 90 days for non-oil exports. A supplier is under pressure to be paid within that window, which is a reason to agree payment timing clearly. NAFDAC's export guideline also says it does not issue export certificates for products that have already left Nigeria, so health or free sale certificates must be in hand before the goods sail. For the Nigeria side, see how Nigerian exporters get paid.

Customs release and claims in Canada

For food, the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (section 13) require the importer to give import information, including the first destination in Canada and the common name and quantity of the food, before or at the time of import, so the description on the bill and your declaration should line up. Your broker uses the carrier's references from the shipping documents to match the cargo to your release request. If the description, weight or consignee differ from your invoice, expect questions. The broader process is in sea freight from Lagos to Montreal or Halifax.

On arrival, check the seal before the container is opened and photograph it. If goods are damaged or short, note it on the delivery receipt, notify the carrier and your insurer in writing straight away, and keep the bill, invoice, packing list and photographs. Carriage contracts and insurance policies set time limits for notice and claims; read yours before you need it.

Worked example

Example only: a bill shows 640 cartons, 12,800 kg, seal number ending 4471. The packing list says 660 cartons. Before the bill is issued, ask the supplier to correct whichever is wrong. After arrival, a 20-carton gap with the seal intact points to a loading error by the shipper, not theft in transit, which changes who you claim against.

Where Pryme fits

Many importers release the balance to a Nigerian supplier only once they have seen a clean bill. A Pryme business account holds NGN and USD, and the Finance agent can prepare that balance payment and match it to the bill and invoice; a person approves before it is sent.

Questions people ask

What is a clean bill of lading?

One with no notes of damage, shortage or defective packing. A claused bill flags a problem at loading and is usually refused under a letter of credit.

Do I need the original bill of lading to collect my container?

Under a negotiable "to order" bill, yes. Under a sea waybill or after a telex release, the named consignee can collect without it.

Who should be consignee on a bill of lading from Lagos?

Your business's exact legal name, or "to order of" your bank if you pay by letter of credit.

What should I do if the seal number does not match?

Photograph it before opening, note it on the delivery receipt and tell the carrier and your insurer in writing immediately.
