Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bureau de change licence: CBN 2024 rules, facts only

Tier 1 and Tier 2 capital, fees, ownership limits, board rules, licensing stages and banned activities under the CBN's 2024 BDC guidelines.

The short answer

Under the CBN's 2024 Regulatory and Supervisory Guidelines for Bureau De Change Operations, a Tier 1 BDC needs minimum capital of ₦2 billion and may operate nationwide, while a Tier 2 BDC needs ₦500 million and is limited to one state. Licensing runs in three stages (approval in principle, provisional approval, final licence), and banks, IMTOs, government bodies, foreign individuals and shareholders in another BDC may not own one.

The CBN reset the bureau de change sector in 2024. Every existing operator had to reapply under new guidelines with far higher capital, and only BDCs on the CBN's published list may now operate. This page sets out what the guidelines say, from the CBN's own document (approved 22 May 2024) and law-firm and press summaries. It does not cover any amendment the CBN may have issued later; check cbn.gov.ng before you act.

The two tiers

Tier 1Tier 2
Minimum capital₦2 billion₦500 million
Where it can operateAny state and the FCTOne state only
BranchesWith CBN written approval, at least 1 km apartUp to five in that state with CBN consent, per Banwo & Ighodalo
FranchisesAllowed, with CBN approvalNot allowed
Application fee (non-refundable)₦1 million₦250,000
Licence fee (non-refundable)₦5 million₦2 million
Board5 to 7 directors, with an executive director besides the MD/CEO3 to 5 directors

Sources differ on the Tier 2 branch number: Banwo & Ighodalo's summary says up to five, while a February 2026 Techeconomy report said up to three. Confirm the current figure with the CBN. Capital must be verified by the CBN, and section 8.1(d) of the guidelines bars funding shares in cash. Banwo & Ighodalo add that a board cannot be made up of only one gender.

The transition for existing operators

The guidelines did not grandfather old licences. Banwo & Ighodalo note that existing BDCs had to reapply for their chosen tier and meet the new capital within six months of the effective date, 3 June 2024. Operators that did not complete the process do not appear on the CBN's list, and the old entry capital no longer applies. Anyone buying or taking over an existing BDC business should treat it as a new application, not a transfer of an old licence.

Who may not own a BDC

Section 3 of the guidelines lists those who may not take part in BDC ownership, directly or indirectly. They include:

  • Commercial, merchant and payment service banks.
  • Other financial institutions and international money transfer operators (IMTOs).
  • Government bodies.
  • Non-Nigerian natural persons.
  • Sanctioned persons.
  • Anyone who is already a shareholder in another BDC.

Owning more than one BDC is also a ground for revocation under section 19. TechCabal's December 2025 report adds that fintechs are excluded from BDC licences.

The three licensing stages

  1. Approval in principle (AIP). Appendix 1 lists an application letter, CAC name reservation, lists of shareholders and directors, evidence of capital, the fee receipt, a draft memorandum and articles, a business plan, KYC forms for shareholders and directors, an AML/CFT policy and draft governance manuals.
  2. Provisional approval. Appendix 5 adds certified incorporation documents, a CAC status report, the shareholders' register and agreement, share certificates, senior management CVs, ICT evidence and service-level agreements. This stage allows IT integration to begin.
  3. Final licence. Appendix 6 includes confirmation of integration with the CBN's IT department, NIBSS BVN confirmation, an operational code, NFIU confirmation, insurance, contingency and business continuity plans, and a board readiness attestation.

Banwo & Ighodalo list the systems a BDC must connect to: the CBN extranet gateway, the returns rendition system, FIFX, FinA, CARP (the AML/CFT rendition platform), TRMS and the FIRS (now NRS) TIN verification portal.

What a BDC may not do

Section 4.2 sets out non-permissible activities; Banwo & Ighodalo count 23, up from 7 in 2015. They include street trading, keeping accounts for the public, taking deposits or granting loans, retail FX sales to non-individuals (except business travel allowance), international outward transfers, acting as an FX custodian, derivatives and speculative trades, selling FX on credit, acting as a payment or collection agent, dealing in gold or precious metals, dealing in cryptocurrency, and setting up subsidiaries.

Where the sector stands

  • TechCabal reported on 8 December 2025 that the CBN had fully licensed 82 BDCs (2 Tier 1, 80 Tier 2) effective 27 November 2025, that only listed BDCs may operate, and that unlicensed operation can attract a fine of up to ₦10 million plus ₦200,000 a day under section 57(1) of BOFIA 2020.
  • Techeconomy reported on 23 February 2026 that the CBN had approved about 100 new licences.

For the ongoing duties once licensed, see BDC record keeping and reporting. If you are a buyer of FX rather than an operator, read how to buy dollars legally and whether you can hold dollars.

What to check first

  • The current CBN list of licensed BDCs and any amendment to the 2024 guidelines.
  • Whether every intended shareholder is eligible under section 3.
  • Whether capital can be shown from verifiable, non-cash sources.
  • Your IT readiness for the CBN, NFIU and NRS integrations.

This is information drawn from the published guidelines, not legal advice. A BDC application is a regulated process; work with advisers familiar with CBN licensing.

Questions people ask

How much capital do I need to start a BDC in Nigeria?

Under the CBN's 2024 guidelines, ₦2 billion for Tier 1 (nationwide) and ₦500 million for Tier 2 (one state). Check cbn.gov.ng for any later amendment.

Can I own two BDCs?

No. A shareholder in one BDC may not own another, directly or indirectly, and multiple ownership is a ground for licence revocation under the guidelines.

How do I check if a BDC is licensed?

The CBN publishes the list of licensed BDCs on its website; only listed BDCs may operate, TechCabal reported in December 2025.

Can a BDC sell dollars on credit or take deposits?

No. Section 4.2 of the 2024 guidelines lists selling FX on credit, taking deposits and granting loans among non-permissible activities.
