Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Betting shop agent: licences and levies, facts only

Who regulates a betting shop agent after the 2024 Supreme Court ruling, Lagos agent registration, the operator agreement and taxes that apply.

The short answer

Since the Supreme Court's 22 November 2024 judgment, lottery and gaming are regulated by each state, with the federal National Lottery Regulatory Commission's role limited to the FCT. A betting shop agent works under a licensed operator and must also meet the rules of the state where the shop sits; in Lagos, the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority runs an online registration platform for agents in all gaming categories, with an agent permit fee that it says also serves as introductory personal income tax.

Most betting shops in Nigeria are not operators. They are agents: a shop owner runs a kiosk or outlet under the brand and terminal of a licensed sports betting operator and earns a share of the business. That makes two sets of rules matter: the state regulator's, and the operator's agent agreement. This page sets out what is established, and what you must check locally.

Who regulates betting now

The legal ground shifted in November 2024. According to a June 2026 regulatory guide by Adeola Oyinlade & Co on Mondaq:

  • On 22 November 2024 the Supreme Court (Attorney-General of Lagos State v Attorney-General of the Federation) held that lottery and gaming are residual matters for states, and declared the National Lottery Act 2005 unconstitutional in its entirety.
  • By implication, the National Lottery Regulatory Commission's role is confined to the FCT, where the FCT Administration has a Lottery Regulatory Office.
  • A Central Gaming Bill 2025 passed the National Assembly, but the President withheld assent.
  • In Lagos, the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA), under a 2021 law, licenses sports betting, casinos, lotteries, gaming machines, pool betting and promotions, physical and online.

EY's August 2025 tax alert adds that operators with only a federal licence need a state licence where they have a business establishment, and that about 45% of states, including Lagos, Ogun and the FCT, had clear rules, while licensing structures were still developing in many others. Check your state's gaming or lotteries board directly; rules for retail agents differ by state and are not collected in one place.

Agent registration in Lagos

LSLGA's agents' registration platform page, last updated 8 September 2025, says:

  • The platform is for agents in all gaming categories.
  • Registration is online and gives the agent a recognised state ID number.
  • There is an agent permit fee, which LSLGA says "also serves as introductory Personal Income Tax" to the Lagos State Government.

The page does not publish the fee amount, the documents needed or penalties for operating unregistered. Ask your operator's agent team and LSLGA for the current fee before you pay anyone, and pay only through official channels.

The operator's agent agreement

Your relationship with the operator is a contract. Before signing, read it for these points, and get every one in writing:

TermWhat to check
CommissionHow it is calculated (on stakes, on net revenue, or tiered), and when it is paid
Float and payoutsWho funds winning payouts at the shop, how fast the operator reimburses, payout limits at shop level
EquipmentWho owns terminals, printers and screens; deposits and charges for damage
Branding and locationExclusivity, signage rules, approval for moving the shop
ComplianceAge checks, ID for large wins, anti-money-laundering duties, record keeping
TerminationNotice period, how the final settlement is done

Taxes and levies that touch the shop

  • Withholding tax on winnings. EY reports that the 2024 Withholding Tax Regulations apply 5% WHT on winnings paid to players from 1 January 2025, collected at source. In practice the operator's system handles this; follow its payout process.
  • Operators' tax. EY says that under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, from 1 January 2026, gaming companies are taxed like other companies and their previous VAT exemption is repealed. That affects operators directly and may shape agent terms.
  • Your own income tax. Commission you earn is your business income. In Lagos the agent permit fee also counts as introductory personal income tax, per LSLGA, but that does not replace filing on your full income.
  • Local government charges. Shop signage, trading permits and similar local charges are set locally; ask your local government secretariat what applies.

Keep a simple compliance file at the shop: your registration evidence, the permit receipt, the signed agent agreement, the operator's licence details and any letters from the regulator. Inspectors and the operator's field team will ask for these, and a complete file makes renewals and disputes far easier to handle.

Anti-money-laundering registration

The Special Control Unit against Money Laundering (SCUML) lists casinos, pool betting and lottery among designated non-financial businesses, and its registration guideline names the State Lotteries Board document among sector extras. SCUML says registration is free and done only on its portal. Ask your operator whether the agent outlet or only the operator must register, and keep the answer in writing. See how to apply for a SCUML certificate.

What to check first

  1. Confirm the operator holds a licence from your state's regulator, not only a federal one.
  2. Ask the state regulator (LSLGA in Lagos) how agents register and the current permit fee.
  3. Read the agent agreement for commission, payout funding and termination.
  4. Settle SCUML registration responsibility with the operator.
  5. Set up cash controls before opening: see cash handling in a betting shop.

This page is information, not legal or tax advice. Rules in this sector are changing state by state, so check the regulator's own pages before you rely on any point.

Questions people ask

Who issues betting licences in Nigeria now?

State regulators. The Supreme Court ruled on 22 November 2024 that lottery and gaming are state matters; the National Lottery Regulatory Commission's role is limited to the FCT, per a 2026 Mondaq guide.

How do I register as a betting agent in Lagos?

LSLGA runs an online agents' registration platform for all gaming categories. It gives a state ID number and charges an agent permit fee that also serves as introductory personal income tax. The fee is not published on the page; ask LSLGA.

Do betting winnings attract tax in Nigeria?

EY reports 5% withholding tax on winnings from 1 January 2025 under the 2024 WHT Regulations, collected at source by the operator.

Does a betting shop need a SCUML certificate?

SCUML lists casinos, pool betting and lottery as designated businesses. Confirm with your operator and SCUML whether the outlet or only the operator must register.
