Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Attending a Nigerian court case from the UK by video

Nigerian courts have sat virtually since 2020, mainly where no evidence is taken. When a UK-based party can join by video, and what your lawyer does.

The short answer

Nigerian courts can sit remotely: the National Judicial Council's 2020 guidelines allow Zoom, Teams or Google Meet hearings, and the Supreme Court said in 2020, when striking out a challenge, that "as of today virtual sitting is not unconstitutional". The guidelines steer remote hearings towards matters that do not require taking evidence, so a UK-based party can often follow or be represented at mentions, applications and judgments by video, while giving evidence from abroad depends on the court's permission, sought by your Nigerian lawyer.

Remote hearings came into Nigerian courts during the 2020 lockdowns. An International Bar Association article by Ugonna Ogbuagu and Kehinde Takuro of ÆLEX, written in late 2020, describes the framework that grew up:

  • National Judicial Council guidelines (2020). Courts may use platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, and should insist on remote hearings for matters that do not require taking evidence. Directions, rulings and judgments may be delivered virtually. Remote sittings must be live-streamed through a publicised link or social media channel, and published as remote sittings.
  • Lagos High Court practice direction. Covers urgent new cases and pending urgent or time-bound applications, such as bail and fundamental rights applications where the applicant is in custody. Filing is electronic unless impracticable; the court and counsel record proceedings, and parties may record only with the court's leave.
  • Federal High Court Practice Direction 2020. Reinforces e-filing and electronic payment, allows hearing notices by text message, and where parties and lawyers agree to a virtual hearing, the scheduling is arranged with the registrar.
  • Supreme Court. Lagos and Ekiti States brought suits against the Attorney-General of the Federation over virtual hearings. The plaintiffs withdrew after the court indicated the cases were speculative and premature, and in striking out the Lagos suit the court said "as of today virtual sitting is not unconstitutional". ThisDay reported on 15 July 2020 that a seven-member panel struck out both suits as premature, told judges they could continue virtual proceedings while the National Assembly worked on a constitutional amendment, and that one justice noted practice directions enjoy a presumption of regularity until set aside.

Each court sets its own practice, and directions may have been updated since 2020. Ask your lawyer for the current practice direction of the specific court where your case sits: a State High Court, the Federal High Court, a Magistrates' Court or a customary court may differ.

What you can usually do by video

Stage of the caseRemote attendanceYour role from the UK
Mentions and adjournmentsCommonly suited to remote sittingsUsually none; your lawyer appears
Interlocutory applications argued on affidavitSuited to remote sittings under the NJC guidance, as no oral evidence is takenSwear any affidavit needed in the UK in advance
Trial, where witnesses give evidenceNeeds the court's permission; the NJC guidance steers remote hearings away from evidenceYour lawyer applies; you may need to travel if refused
Ruling or judgmentMay be delivered virtually under the NJC guidanceWatch the live stream or join the link

What your Nigerian lawyer does

  1. Checks whether the court sits virtually for your type of hearing, and on which platform.
  2. Applies to the court, or agrees with the other side, for remote attendance where needed, and arranges the scheduling with the registrar as the Federal High Court direction describes.
  3. Receives the link and the hearing notice, which may come by text message, and passes them to you.
  4. Prepares your affidavits and documents for e-filing, and tells you which must be sworn and authenticated in the UK.
  5. Appears for you. In most civil matters your lawyer can appear without you being present; ask whether your attendance is required at all.

Practical points for joining from the UK

  • Time zone. Nigeria uses West Africa Time, one hour ahead of GMT. During British Summer Time the UK and Nigeria share the same clock time; in winter the UK is an hour behind. Confirm the hearing time in both.
  • Delays. Courts often take several matters in a list. Be ready from the start of the list and keep the day clear.
  • Connection. Use a wired or strong connection, a quiet private room, and a plain background. Keep your ID to hand in case the court asks you to identify yourself.
  • Recording. Under the Lagos direction described by the IBA, parties may record proceedings only with the court's leave. Do not record without it.
  • Documents. Have the court bundle, your affidavit and any exhibits open, numbered as your lawyer filed them.

If you must give evidence

Where your case turns on your own testimony, ask your lawyer early whether the court will hear you remotely and what it will require, such as a location the court approves, someone to confirm your identity, or arrangements for exhibits. If the court refuses, you will need to travel, and adjournments while you arrange it can add months. Some parties instead give evidence through a sworn statement where the court's rules allow written statements on oath; your lawyer will know whether the court uses them.

Where Pryme fits

Legal fees, filing costs and travel for hearings are paid in naira. A Pryme account opened from the UK holds pounds and naira with local details for each, and you can pay your lawyer's Nigerian account after seeing the rate and the fee. A verifiable receipt or statement through VerifyDoc.ai gives you a record of what you paid. Related: swearing an affidavit in the UK for Nigeria and getting certified true copies of court documents.

Questions people ask

Are virtual court hearings legal in Nigeria?

The Supreme Court said in 2020, while striking out a challenge by Lagos State, that "as of today virtual sitting is not unconstitutional". NJC guidelines and court practice directions govern how they work.

Can I give evidence in a Nigerian court from the UK?

Only with the court's permission. The NJC guidelines steer remote hearings towards matters that do not require taking evidence, so your lawyer needs to apply.

Do I need to be present at every hearing of my Nigerian case?

Usually not in civil matters, where your lawyer can appear for you. Ask whether your attendance is required for a particular date.

Can I record a Nigerian virtual court hearing?

Under the Lagos practice direction described by the IBA, parties may record only with the court's leave.
