Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

AI for KYC and AML monitoring: benefits and limits

Where AI helps with customer checks and transaction monitoring, where it falls short, what UK, US and EU regulators say, and what a person decides.

Part of the guideAI agents for business finance: what they can and can't do

The short answer

AI helps KYC and AML work most by reading documents, screening names more intelligently, scoring alerts by risk and assembling case files, so analysts spend their time on the cases that matter. It is limited by data quality, the need to explain decisions to regulators and the risk of missing new patterns. Decisions to refuse or exit a customer, freeze funds or file a suspicious activity report stay with a named, accountable person.

Know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) work is repetitive, document-heavy and full of false alarms, which makes it an obvious candidate for AI. It also carries legal duties that cannot be delegated to software. This article covers where the line sits. For how compliance fits with the other finance agents, see our guide to AI agents for business finance.

Where AI helps

Onboarding and KYC

  • Document reading. Extracting names, dates, addresses and company details from passports, utility bills and registry filings, and checking them against each other.
  • Company structures. Following ownership chains through registries to identify beneficial owners and flag gaps.
  • Chasing missing items. Asking the customer for the specific document still needed, and following up.
  • Periodic reviews. Refreshing files on schedule or when something changes, rather than in large annual batches.

Screening and monitoring

  • Smarter name matching. Handling transliteration, spelling variants and word order in sanctions and politically exposed person lists, while scoring weak matches lower.
  • Adverse media. Reading news in several languages and summarising whether a story concerns the same person.
  • Alert scoring. Ranking transaction-monitoring alerts by likely risk, so the most serious are reviewed first.
  • Case preparation. Pulling the customer's history, related accounts and previous alerts into one file with a draft narrative.

Regulators are broadly supportive. The FATF has said new technologies can make AML measures faster, cheaper and more accurate if used responsibly. In April 2026 the FCA named AML detection and KYC checks among the use cases in the second cohort of its AI Live Testing programme. In the US, an April 2026 FinCEN proposal would treat responsible use of innovative technology, including AI, as a mitigating factor in enforcement decisions; as of October 2026 it remains a proposal.

Where it falls short

LimitWhy it mattersWhat to do
ExplainabilityYou must be able to tell a regulator why a customer was or was not flaggedRecord the factors behind every score; prefer models whose outputs can be explained
Data qualityPoor or incomplete customer data produces confident but wrong scoresFix onboarding data first; monitor for missing fields
New patternsModels trained on past cases may miss new typologiesKeep some rules-based scenarios alongside; review typologies regularly
BiasScores can track nationality or name rather than risk, excluding legitimate customersTest outcomes across customer groups; review declines
Silent suppressionAn AI that closes alerts automatically can hide real riskOnly auto-close under a validated, documented policy, with sampling
ChangeSwapping rules for a model can create gapsRun old and new side by side before switching

The Wolfsberg Group, an association of global banks, published a statement in August 2025 on moving to new monitoring approaches responsibly. It stresses validating the new approach during the transition, weighing model risk against financial crime risk, and being able to explain coverage and effectiveness. Those three points are a useful checklist for any firm, large or small.

A worked example: alert triage

A payments business generates 2,000 transaction-monitoring alerts a month. The figures are illustrative.

Without AIWith AI triage and case preparation
Alerts2,0002,000
Minutes per alert, including gathering history208 (file assembled in advance)
Analyst hours a monthAbout 667About 267
Order of reviewDate receivedHighest risk first
Alerts closed without a personNoneNone at first; later, only low-risk categories under a validated policy, with a monthly sample

The saving, about 400 analyst hours a month, comes from preparation and prioritisation, not from removing human review. The second benefit is speed on the alerts that matter: a high-risk case reaches an analyst on day one rather than waiting its turn. Keep the time saved in compliance, rather than cutting the team, until the new process has been validated.

What a person must decide

  1. Whether to onboard, refuse or exit a customer.
  2. Whether to freeze or return funds.
  3. Whether to file a suspicious activity report. In the UK, a nominated officer considers internal reports and decides independently whether to submit a report to the National Crime Agency.
  4. How to treat a possible sanctions match before any payment proceeds.
  5. Changes to the firm's risk appetite, scenarios and thresholds.

An agent can draft each of these decisions with the evidence attached; it should not make them. This follows the same pattern as our articles on finance decisions a person should make and audit trails for AI agents: prepare, escalate, record. Care is also needed with customer messages. An AI support agent must not reveal that a report has been made or that an account is under review, which in the UK could amount to tipping off.

Rules are changing in the EU

The EU's single AML rulebook, the Anti-Money Laundering Regulation, applies from 10 July 2027, with a new EU authority, AMLA, directly supervising a small number of high-risk cross-border firms from 2028. Firms serving EU customers should check that any AI used in monitoring will meet the new rules on ongoing monitoring and record-keeping. The parent guide covers the EU AI Act alongside.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. What does each score or match rely on, and can an analyst see those factors for every alert?
  2. How was the model validated, on whose data, and how often is it re-tested?
  3. Can it run alongside our current rules so we can compare results before switching?
  4. Does it ever close alerts or clear matches without a person? Under what documented policy?
  5. How are outcomes tested for bias across nationalities, names and customer types?
  6. Where is customer data processed and stored, and is it used to train models for other clients?
  7. Can we export every alert, decision and reason for a regulator or auditor?

Where Pryme fits

Pryme business accounts include a Compliance agent that prepares work inside a mandate with a ceiling; above the ceiling a person decides, and an audit trail records agent actions. Whatever tool you use, decisions to onboard, refuse, freeze or report should stay with a named person. In Nigeria, Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit; outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Can AI replace AML analysts?

No. It can cut the time analysts spend gathering information and reviewing low-risk alerts, and direct their attention to the highest-risk cases. Decisions to report, freeze or exit customers stay with accountable people.

Do regulators allow AI in transaction monitoring?

Yes. The FATF, FCA and FinCEN have all signalled support for responsible use of new technology in AML, while expecting firms to understand, test and explain their systems.

Can AI reduce false positives in AML?

It can rank alerts by likely risk and handle name variations better than simple rules, which reduces wasted reviews. Any automatic closing of alerts should follow a validated policy with regular sampling.

Can AI file a suspicious activity report?

It can draft one and assemble the evidence. The decision to submit belongs to a person; in the UK, the nominated officer decides whether to report to the National Crime Agency.

Is AI KYC high-risk under the EU AI Act?

KYC and fraud detection are not, in general, on the Act's high-risk list. Credit scoring of individuals is. Data protection and AML law still apply in full.
