Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Affidavit sworn in the US for a Nigerian court

The Evidence Act lets Nigerian courts use affidavits sworn abroad before a notary or a Nigerian mission. How to swear one in the US so it is accepted.

The short answer

Section 110 of the Evidence Act 2011 allows an affidavit sworn outside Nigeria to be used in a Nigerian court if it was sworn before a judge or magistrate (authenticated by the court's seal or a notary public) or before the authorised officer of a Nigerian embassy or consulate. In the US that usually means a notary public or the Nigerian mission. The original must reach the court for filing, and it must not be sworn before the lawyer acting for you.

Land disputes, estate applications, change-of-name matters and divorce proceedings in Nigeria often need evidence from a family member who now lives in the US. Nigerian civil procedure leans heavily on affidavits, so the question is how to swear one in Houston or Newark that a judge in Lagos or Enugu will accept. The Evidence Act answers most of it. This page is information, not legal advice; your Nigerian lawyer should draft the affidavit.

What the Evidence Act says

Section 108
Before an affidavit is used in court, the original is filed in court; only the original or an office copy is recognised
Section 109
An affidavit sworn before a person authorised to take affidavits in Nigeria may be used where affidavits are admissible
Section 110
An affidavit sworn in another country before (a) a judge or magistrate, authenticated by the official seal of the court or by a notary public, or (b) the duly authorised officer of a Nigerian embassy, high commission or consulate may be used in court
Section 111
Such an affidavit is prima facie evidence of the officer's seal or signature and authority to administer oaths
Section 112
An affidavit is not admitted if sworn before the person offering it, their legal practitioner, or that practitioner's partner or clerk
Section 122
Courts take judicial notice of the seals of notaries public

Read together, these give two practical routes in the US: a notary public, or the consular officer at a Nigerian mission.

Route 1: a US notary public

  1. Have your Nigerian lawyer draft the affidavit in the court's form, with the suit number, the parties and numbered paragraphs, and a jurat (the closing words recording where, when and before whom it was sworn).
  2. Sign it in front of the notary, who administers the oath or affirmation. Do not sign beforehand.
  3. Ask whether your lawyer wants the US authentication chain as well. Section 110 does not require it on its face, and section 122 says courts notice notarial seals, but some lawyers add state certification, the US Department of State ($20 per document) and the Nigerian mission so the seal cannot be questioned. See notarising documents in the US for Nigeria.
  4. Courier the original to your lawyer for filing; a scan cannot be filed in its place under section 108.

Route 2: the Nigerian mission

Section 110(b) recognises affidavits sworn before the authorised officer of a Nigerian embassy or consulate. In the US those are the embassy in Washington DC and the consulates general in Atlanta and New York. The mission pages we read list consular services such as age declarations and document authentication but not a fee for swearing an affidavit, so contact the mission covering your state before travelling; see which Nigerian mission covers your state. A mission-sworn affidavit avoids the US authentication chain entirely, which can save weeks.

Who must not take your oath

Section 112 bars an affidavit sworn before the person on whose behalf it is offered, their legal practitioner, or the practitioner's partner or clerk. In practice: if your Nigerian lawyer is also a US-qualified notary, or a relative who is a notary is a party to the case, use someone else.

Content that holds up

  • State facts within your own knowledge, and say where something is information you received, naming the source.
  • Attach exhibits (title documents, letters, photographs) and mark them as the court's rules require; your lawyer will know the format.
  • Use your name exactly as on your passport and NIN, with your US address and occupation.
  • Keep it to facts. Argument and legal conclusions are for the lawyer's written address.

Timing and delivery

Court dates in Nigeria rarely wait for post. Ask your lawyer for the filing deadline at the start, then work backwards: the notary is same day, the US chain can add five weeks or more at the State Department alone if mailed, and an international courier adds days. If the deadline is close, the mission route or a notary-only affidavit (if your lawyer is content with it) saves the most time. Send the original by a tracked courier and email your lawyer the tracking number.

A worked example

Example only. Kelechi in Newark is a witness in his late father's estate dispute in Owerri. His lawyer emails a draft affidavit with three exhibits. Kelechi checks every paragraph, corrects one date, and swears it before a New Jersey notary at his bank. Because the other side is expected to challenge everything, the lawyer also asks for the US chain, so the affidavit goes through the New Jersey state office, the State Department and the New York consulate, whose published jurisdiction includes New Jersey. He couriers the original with a tracking number and keeps a scanned set. Had time been short, swearing at the consulate itself would have been the quicker route.

Where Pryme fits

Court filing fees and lawyers' bills in Nigeria are in naira. A Pryme account opened from the US lets you send naira to the law firm and keep a verifiable receipt. For how affidavits are sworn inside Nigeria, see swearing an affidavit in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Can I swear an affidavit in America for a case in Nigeria?

Yes. Section 110 of the Evidence Act 2011 allows affidavits sworn abroad before a judge or magistrate authenticated by court seal or notary public, or before the authorised officer of a Nigerian embassy or consulate.

Does my US notarised affidavit need the Nigerian embassy stamp?

The Act does not require it on its face, and courts take judicial notice of notaries' seals. Some lawyers still ask for full authentication so the seal cannot be challenged; ask yours.

Can I send a scanned affidavit to the court?

Section 108 says the original is filed in court and only the original or an office copy is recognised, so courier the original.

Can my lawyer notarise my affidavit?

No. Section 112 says an affidavit sworn before the legal practitioner of the person offering it, or their partner or clerk, is not admitted.
