Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bills

How many units does ₦5,000 buy on AEDC?

The arithmetic for ₦5,000 of AEDC electricity on each band, with and without VAT, the deductions that cut it, and where to check the live tariff.

The short answer

Divide the amount left after VAT and any debt deduction by your band's tariff. At the rates in NERC's July 2025 order for AEDC (the latest we found as at October 2026), ₦5,000 buys about 22.2 kWh on Band A (₦209.50/kWh) and about 73.4 kWh on Band B non-MD (₦63.35/kWh) if 7.5% VAT is taken out first, and slightly more if no VAT applies. Your receipt and AEDC's tariff checker show the live figures.

'Units' on an electricity token means kilowatt-hours (kWh). How many you get for ₦5,000 depends on three things: the tariff for your band, whether VAT is taken out, and whether part of the payment goes to old debt or a vendor's charge. Because NERC can change AEDC's tariff by a new order, the figures below are worked from a stated order and should be checked against today's rate.

The formula

Where VAT is included in the amount you pay, the VAT part is found by dividing, not by taking 7.5% of ₦5,000: the energy value is ₦5,000 ÷ 1.075 = ₦4,651.16, and VAT is the remaining ₦348.84. We use 7.5% because the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, in force from 1 January 2026, keeps the VAT rate at 7.5% (Forvis Mazars, March 2026), and DisCos remain the taxable suppliers, with VAT borne by the final consumer (BusinessDay, June 2026). Your receipt shows the VAT actually applied, so use that line if it differs.

₦5,000 by band (example)

Example only. Tariffs are the non-MD rates in NERC's July 2025 Supplementary Order for AEDC (ORDER/NERC/2025/059), effective 1 July 2025. Figures assume no vendor charge and no debt deduction.

Band (tariff ₦/kWh)No VAT taken outWith 7.5% VAT taken out
A (209.50)23.87 kWh22.20 kWh
B (63.35)78.93 kWh73.42 kWh
C (51.79)96.54 kWh89.81 kWh
D and E (33.95)147.28 kWh137.00 kWh

Worked line for Band A with VAT: ₦4,651.16 ÷ ₦209.50 = 22.20 kWh. The order says Band B to E rates have stayed frozen at the levels payable since December 2022, while Band A has moved (₦225.00 in April 2024, ₦206.80 in May and June 2024, ₦209.50 from July 2024, per the order's history table).

Why your neighbour gets a different number

Two flats on the same street can get very different units for the same ₦5,000. The usual reasons are:

  • Different feeders. Streets near a boundary can sit on different feeders, and only some feeders are Band A. The AEDC order lists Band A feeders by name.
  • Different customer class. A shop or small business on a maximum demand (MD) meter pays the MD rate: under the July 2025 order, ₦76.15 per kWh on Band B MD against ₦63.35 for non-MD, so ₦4,651.16 buys 61.08 kWh instead of 73.42 kWh.
  • Debt on one account. Arrears recovered from one meter and not the other.
  • Different channels. One buys in an app with no charge, the other from an agent who adds one.

What cuts the units further

A vendor or agent charge

Example only. If a POS agent takes ₦200 from the ₦5,000, the energy value with VAT is ₦4,800 ÷ 1.075 = ₦4,465.12, which on Band A is 21.31 kWh, about 0.9 kWh less. See buying AEDC tokens from a POS agent.

Debt recovery

If your account carries arrears, part of each token can go to the debt. Example only: a ₦1,000 deduction leaves ₦3,651.16 of energy after VAT, or 17.43 kWh on Band A. The receipt should list the deduction; if you do not recognise the debt, ask AEDC for a statement. VAT and deductions on an AEDC token explains each receipt line.

How long ₦5,000 lasts

Divide the units by what you use in a day. Example only: a flat using 6 kWh a day on Band A gets about 3.7 days from 22.20 kWh; the same flat on Band B gets about 12.2 days from 73.42 kWh. Measure your own daily use by reading the meter at the same time on two days (see checking units left on an AEDC meter).

Where to check the live figure

  • AEDC's tariff checker at infocheck.abujaelectricity.com, linked from AEDC's customer service page.
  • The latest AEDC order on nerc.gov.ng.
  • The units and tariff printed on your last token receipt: divide the energy value by the units to see the rate applied to you.

If the rate on your receipt is the Band A rate and your feeder does not get Band A supply, raise it with AEDC. NERC fined AEDC ₦200 million in April 2024 for applying the Band A tariff to customers in all bands (Techeconomy, 5 April 2024).

Steps to work out your own figure

  1. Find your band and tariff class on your last receipt or with AEDC's tariff checker.
  2. Note any VAT, vendor charge and debt deduction printed on the receipt.
  3. Subtract them from the amount you paid to get the energy value.
  4. Divide the energy value by your tariff per kWh.
  5. Compare the answer with the units printed on the receipt. If they differ by more than rounding, ask AEDC to explain the gap.

Where Pryme fits

You can buy AEDC tokens in the Pryme app (/p/electricity); any charge is shown before you approve, and the receipt with units stays in your history so you can repeat this check each time.

Questions people ask

How many units is ₦5,000 on AEDC Band A?

About 22.2 kWh if 7.5% VAT is taken out first, or 23.9 kWh with no VAT, at the ₦209.50/kWh rate in NERC's July 2025 order for AEDC. Check your receipt for the live figure.

How many units is ₦5,000 on Band B in Abuja?

About 73.4 kWh with 7.5% VAT taken out, or 78.9 kWh without, at the ₦63.35/kWh Band B non-MD rate in the same order.

Why did my ₦5,000 AEDC token give fewer units than expected?

VAT, a vendor charge or a debt deduction may have been taken out, or your account may be on a higher band. Each should appear on the receipt.

How do I calculate AEDC units?

Take the amount paid, subtract any vendor charge, VAT and debt deduction, then divide by your band's tariff per kWh.
