Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

VAT and deductions on an AEDC token explained

Why an AEDC token buys fewer units than the tariff suggests: how VAT is taken out, how debt recovery works, and how to read each line on the receipt.

The short answer

An AEDC token buys fewer units than amount ÷ tariff because VAT comes out first and, on some accounts, a debt recovery deduction too. VAT stays at 7.5% under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, and DisCos remain the taxable suppliers, so ₦10,000 inclusive of VAT carries about ₦697.67 of VAT and ₦9,302.33 of energy. Any debt deduction appears as its own line on the receipt.

You pay ₦10,000, divide by the Band A tariff of ₦209.50 per kWh and expect about 47.7 units. The receipt says about 44. The gap is not a mistake by the vendor: it is usually VAT, and sometimes a deduction for old debt. This guide explains each line on an AEDC token receipt, with the arithmetic, so you can tell a normal deduction from one worth querying.

VAT on electricity in 2026

The Nigeria Tax Act 2025, effective 1 January 2026, keeps the VAT rate at 7.5% (Forvis Mazars, March 2026). BusinessDay reported in June 2026 that the Act zero-rates electricity supplied to the national grid, and generation and transmission, while distribution companies remain the taxable suppliers, with VAT borne by the final consumer. In plain terms: the upstream parts of the chain no longer charge VAT to each other, but you, the customer buying from AEDC, still pay VAT on your token.

NERC's tariff orders give the rate per kWh without a VAT line. AEDC's July 2025 Supplementary Order (ORDER/NERC/2025/059), the latest AEDC order we found on NERC's site as at October 2026, sets Band A at ₦209.50 per kWh and Band B non-MD at ₦63.35.

How VAT is taken out of a token

When you pay a round sum for a token, that sum includes VAT. So the VAT part is not 7.5% of what you paid; it is the slice that, added to the energy value, makes up the total.

Example only. ₦10,000 ÷ 1.075 = ₦9,302.33 of energy, and VAT is ₦697.67. On Band A that buys 44.40 kWh (9,302.33 ÷ 209.50); on Band B non-MD, 146.84 kWh (9,302.33 ÷ 63.35). Taking a flat 7.5% of ₦10,000 (₦750) would overstate the VAT by about ₦52.

Debt recovery deductions

If your account carries arrears, for example unpaid postpaid bills from before you got a prepaid meter, AEDC can recover part of the debt from each token. AEDC lists a Debt Management page on its customer service page. The deduction should show on the receipt as a separate line, often labelled debt, arrears or outstanding.

Example only. On the same ₦10,000 with a ₦1,500 debt deduction, energy left after VAT is ₦7,802.33, or 37.24 kWh on Band A and 123.16 kWh on Band B non-MD. The arithmetic of how the debt and VAT interact varies by vending system; the receipt is the record to rely on.

Debt you did not create

NERC's Customer Protection Regulations 2023 say a debt is not transferable to a new occupant (Reg 29(3), as summarised by Mondaq). If you moved in recently and deductions started on your first token, ask AEDC for a statement showing when the debt arose, and dispute it in writing if it predates your tenancy. See how to dispute an AEDC bill.

Credits that go the other way

Some lines on a token add value rather than take it. Two NERC measures are worth knowing:

  • Meter cost refunds. NERC's Order NERC/2026/025 (February 2026) requires DisCos to refund customers who paid for meters under the MAP scheme as monthly energy credits over 120 months; for prepaid customers a credit token is generated by the 4th of each month, and the credit cannot be offset against legacy debt (Techeconomy, 4 March 2026). AEDC runs a MAP refund portal at maprefund.abujaelectricity.com.
  • Band A compensation. When NERC orders compensation for a Band A shortfall, prepaid customers receive it as token credit. See AEDC Band A compensation.

Steps if the units look wrong

  1. Divide the energy value on the receipt by the units to find the tariff applied.
  2. Compare it with your band's rate in the latest AEDC order or on AEDC's tariff checker (infocheck.abujaelectricity.com).
  3. Check the VAT line against the 1.075 formula above.
  4. If a debt line appears, ask AEDC (customercare@abujaelectricity.com) for the account statement behind it.

Where Pryme fits

Buying AEDC tokens in the Pryme app (/p/electricity) keeps each receipt in your history, so you can compare VAT and deductions month by month. If you need proof for a debt dispute, you can generate a verifiable statement through VerifyDoc.ai.

Questions people ask

Is there VAT on AEDC prepaid tokens?

Yes. The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 keeps VAT at 7.5%, and DisCos remain the taxable suppliers with VAT borne by the final consumer. The VAT appears as a line on your receipt.

How much VAT is on a ₦10,000 AEDC token?

If the ₦10,000 includes VAT, the VAT is about ₦697.67 and the energy value about ₦9,302.33 (₦10,000 ÷ 1.075).

Why is AEDC deducting money from my token?

Usually to recover arrears on the account. The receipt should list it; if you do not recognise the debt, ask AEDC for a statement and dispute it in writing.

Can AEDC deduct a previous tenant's debt from my token?

NERC's Customer Protection Regulations 2023 say debt is not transferable to a new occupant. Raise it with AEDC with your tenancy start date.
