Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Can I add my parents in Nigeria to my US health insurance?

Why US employer and Marketplace plans rarely cover parents who live in Nigeria, what the rules say, and the alternatives that do work for them.

The short answer

Almost never. US employer plans usually cover a spouse and children (to age 26), not parents, and HealthCare.gov says Marketplace plans are only for people who live in the United States. Parents in Nigeria are better covered by a Nigerian HMO or state scheme, with separate visitor insurance when they travel to the US.

It is a reasonable question. You pay for family coverage at work, your parents depend on you, and US care is excellent. But US health insurance is built around people who live in the US, and around a narrow definition of family. This guide explains why, and what to do instead.

Employer plans

Employer plans define who counts as a dependant in the plan documents. In most plans that means a spouse and children; HealthCare.gov notes that children can usually be added to a parent's plan and stay on it until they turn 26. Parents are rarely eligible. Even where a plan allows other relatives, it typically requires them to live with you or be your tax dependant, and US networks are not built to pay Nigerian hospitals for routine care.

Check your plan's summary plan description or ask HR. If you read "dependent" in the eligibility section, it will spell out exactly which relationships qualify.

Marketplace plans

HealthCare.gov lists three conditions to buy a Marketplace plan: live in the United States; be a US citizen or national, or a lawfully present non-citizen; and not be incarcerated. Parents living in Nigeria do not meet the first condition, so they cannot be enrolled.

The household rules point the same way. HealthCare.gov says to include parents on your application only if you will claim them as tax dependants. Under IRS rules, a dependant must be a US citizen, US resident, US national or a resident of Canada or Mexico, so parents resident in Nigeria cannot be your tax dependants; see claiming parents in Nigeria as dependants.

Common misunderstandings

"My plan covers family"
Family coverage in a US plan almost always means spouse and children, not parents or siblings
"I pay their bills, so they are my dependants"
Support alone is not enough for tax dependency; the citizen or resident test comes first
"My plan has international emergency cover"
Some US plans cover you, the member, for emergencies while travelling; that does not extend to relatives who are not on the plan
"A broker can add them anyway"
Enrolling someone who does not meet eligibility rules can lead to cancelled cover or claims being refused

If someone offers to put your parents on a US policy for a fee, ask which plan, what the eligibility section says and whether the insurer will pay a Nigerian hospital. If the answers are vague, walk away.

What about when they visit?

Parents visiting on a B-2 visa are not resident and are generally not eligible for Marketplace cover. US hospital bills for an uninsured visitor can be very large. The usual answer is short-term visitor or travel medical insurance bought for the dates of the trip, before they travel. Read the policy's limits, the treatment of pre-existing conditions and whether it pays the hospital directly. Buy it for the full length of the stay, including travel days, and keep a copy of the policy with your parents' passports. Our guide to visitor health insurance for parents visiting the US covers this.

Alternatives that work

NeedBetter optionWhere to start
Routine care in NigeriaNigerian HMO or state schemeNHIA's accredited HMO list; your parents' state agency
Big one-off bills in NigeriaPay the hospital directly with an invoiceSee our guide on paying hospital bills
Care during a US visitVisitor medical insurance for the tripBuy before departure
Long-term move to the USDepends on immigration statusEligibility follows status; see HealthCare.gov

For the Nigerian side in detail, see health insurance for parents in Nigeria. If parents become lawful permanent residents and live in the US, HealthCare.gov's immigrant coverage pages explain which programmes they can access and when; the rules are tied to status and have changed recently, so check them at the time.

Steps for your parents' cover

  1. Check your own plan's eligibility rules so you know the answer for certain.
  2. Choose a Nigerian HMO or state scheme near where your parents live, and confirm it is on NHIA's accredited list.
  3. Read the benefit list and exclusions before paying.
  4. Buy visitor medical insurance for each US trip before they fly.
  5. Keep both policies' contact numbers in your phone and theirs.

Budgeting both sides

Worked example only: you budget $40 a month per parent for Nigerian HMO cover and $150 for a three-week visitor policy for each US trip. For two parents with one trip each a year, that is $40 × 2 × 12 = $960 plus $300, or $1,260 a year. That is planned spending, compared with an unplanned bill that could be several times larger.

Where Pryme fits

If you pay a Nigerian HMO premium, you can do it from a Pryme account by converting with Swap and sending naira to the HMO's account, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. See send.

Questions people ask

Can I add my mother in Nigeria to my employer health insurance?

Usually not. Most employer plans cover a spouse and children; check your plan's eligibility rules with HR.

Can my parents in Nigeria get Obamacare?

No. HealthCare.gov says you must live in the United States to buy a Marketplace plan.

Can I claim my parents as dependants to get them on my plan?

IRS rules require a dependant to be a US citizen, resident or national, or a resident of Canada or Mexico, so parents living in Nigeria do not qualify.

What insurance should my parents have when visiting the US?

Visitor or travel medical insurance bought for the trip dates before they travel, with limits and pre-existing condition terms you have read.
