Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Adashe and cooperatives in Kaduna: how they work and the risks

How adashe rotating savings and staff cooperatives in Kaduna work, the rules members agree, where money is lost and what protection each one has.

The short answer

Adashe is a rotating savings arrangement: members pay a fixed sum each round and one person collects the pot until everyone has had a turn, with no interest and no regulator behind it. A cooperative society is a registered body under the Nigerian Cooperative Societies Act, with bye-laws, an annual audit and a Director of Cooperatives who can inquire into its affairs. Neither is a bank deposit, so neither is covered by NDIC deposit insurance.

In Kaduna, adashe is part of ordinary life. Traders in the markets, workers in the same ministry or factory, students and religious groups all run them. Next to adashe sit cooperative societies: staff cooperatives that deduct contributions from salary, thrift-and-credit cooperatives that lend to members, and farmers' groups. This guide explains how each works, the rules worth agreeing in advance and where people lose money.

How adashe works

An adashe group agrees three things: how much each member pays, how often (daily, weekly or monthly), and the order in which members collect. Each round everyone pays and one member takes the total. When the last member has collected, the cycle ends or starts again. Another common form uses a collector who goes round shops and stalls each day, takes a small sum from each trader and returns the total at month end, keeping a fee. We found no published standard for that fee, so agree it in writing.

Worked example (illustrative)

Twelve members each pay ₦15,000 a month. Each pot is 12 × ₦15,000 = ₦180,000. The first collector receives ₦180,000 after paying only ₦15,000, so the other eleven have in effect lent them ₦165,000 without interest. The twelfth collector has paid ₦180,000 over a year and receives ₦180,000: no gain at all. With headline inflation at 14.63 per cent year on year in September 2026 (NBS, as reported), ₦180,000 received at month twelve buys noticeably less than ₦180,000 did at month one. Collecting early is valuable; collecting late is a cost.

Rules worth agreeing before you join

  • The contribution and the exact due date, and how it is paid (cash, transfer to one person, or into a group account).
  • The collection order, how it is decided and whether turns can be swapped.
  • Penalties for late payment and what happens if a member who has already collected stops paying.
  • Who keeps the records, and whether every member can see them.
  • What happens if the organiser falls ill, travels or dies during the cycle.

Cooperatives: what registration adds

A cooperative society registered under the Nigerian Cooperative Societies Act is a legal body with members, a committee and bye-laws. The Act gives members protections an adashe does not have. It requires an annual audit and gives the Director of Cooperatives access to the books (s.36). An inquiry into the society can be held on the application of a majority of the committee or at least a third of members (s.37). Disputes about the society's business are referred to the Director for settlement or arbitration, with an appeal within 30 days (s.49). Misapplying society property is an offence (s.35), and a society can be cancelled if membership falls below ten (s.38).

State governments register cooperatives through their own ministry or department. Kaduna's current fee and office were not on any page we could open, so ask the state cooperative department directly. For comparison, Kano's guidelines (December 2023) set a minimum of 10 members and a ₦15,000 registration fee; do not assume Kaduna is the same.

Before you trust a cooperative

  1. Ask for the registration certificate and the approved bye-laws.
  2. Ask to see the last audited accounts.
  3. Find out who signs on the society's bank account; it should be more than one officer.
  4. If it promises high fixed returns or pays members mainly from new members' money, treat it as a warning sign.

Running a safer adashe

  • Pay by transfer, not cash, so every contribution leaves a record.
  • Keep a shared written list of members, amounts, dates and the collection order, and update it after each round.
  • Keep groups small enough that members know one another; a group of strangers recruited online is harder to hold to account.
  • Ask members who collect early to name a guarantor who will cover missed payments.
  • Agree in writing what happens if the cycle has to stop early, so everyone knows how much they are owed.

Where the money goes missing

Most losses come from the same few patterns: an organiser who disappears with the pot; members who collect early and stop paying; records kept in one person's head; cash stolen from the person holding it; and so-called cooperatives that are investment schemes in disguise. Our guide to Ponzi and investment scams covers the last one. A bank deposit is different: deposits in licensed microfinance banks are insured by the NDIC up to ₦2,000,000 per depositor (cover revised from 2 May 2024, as summarised by SCP Law).

Where Pryme fits

Some people keep their adashe and also save on their own. Pryme's Naira Savings Boxes include a Flexible Box and an Interest-free Box; Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Rates are shown in the app. For more on the trade-off, see ajo, esusu and thrift vs a savings app and cost of living in Kaduna.

Questions people ask

Is adashe legal in Kaduna?

Yes. Adashe is an informal private agreement between members. It is not regulated, so members rely on trust and on whatever they agree in writing.

How do I register a cooperative society in Kaduna?

Through the Kaduna State government's cooperative department. Ask it for the current fee and documents; we could not find them on an official page. You will need members, bye-laws and officers.

What happens if the adashe organiser runs away with the money?

You can report it to the police as a criminal matter, but recovery is hard. Written records of who paid what, and transfers rather than cash, make a case much stronger.

Is cooperative money insured by NDIC?

No. NDIC insures deposits in licensed banks. A cooperative's own funds are not bank deposits, although the cooperative's account at a bank is a deposit of the cooperative.
