Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Aba markets beyond Ariaria: Ahia Ohuru, Cemetery, Eziukwu

Aba has more than Ariaria. What Ahia Ohuru, Cemetery and Eziukwu markets are commonly known for, when prices are lowest and how to shop them well.

The short answer

Beyond Ariaria, Aba shoppers commonly use Ahia Ohuru (often called New Market) for a wide mix of goods, Cemetery Market for foodstuff and household items, and Eziukwu (Ekeoha) for fabrics and general goods. These are descriptions traders and buyers commonly give, not an official directory. Prices are usually best early in the day and outside festive weeks, and NBS data shows food in Abia priced differently from the national average.

Ariaria gets the headlines, but most Aba households buy their food, fabrics and everyday goods elsewhere. This guide covers the other big markets. Abia State does not publish a directory of what each Aba market sells, so the descriptions below are what traders and regular shoppers commonly report. Treat them as a starting point and confirm on your first visit.

The main markets at a glance

MarketCommonly known forGood for
Ahia Ohuru (New Market)General goods: clothing, shoes, household items, electronics and foodstuffOne-stop shopping for many items
Cemetery MarketFoodstuff, provisions and household goodsWeekly food shopping, bulk staples
Eziukwu (Ekeoha) MarketFabrics, clothing, and general goodsLace, ankara and tailoring materials
Ariaria International MarketAba-made shoes, bags, garments, leatherWholesale fashion and materials

Spare parts and electronics are spread across several markets and roads; ask which line or plaza specialises in what you need before you walk the whole market.

When prices are lowest

  • Early morning: fresh produce is most plentiful and sellers want first sales.
  • Mid-week: crowds are usually thinner than at weekends.
  • Outside festive peaks: prices for food, clothing and travel commonly rise around Christmas and Easter when people return home.
  • Harvest season: staples such as yam and garri tend to be cheaper after harvest.

These are patterns traders describe, not guarantees. The surest way to know is to keep a short price list for the items you buy most and compare across visits.

What food costs in Abia, from NBS data

The National Bureau of Statistics publishes state-level food prices. For April 2026, as reported by ThisDay:

  • White garri: Abia had the highest average price in the country at ₦1,075.47 per kg, against a South-East average of ₦944.58.
  • Palm oil (bottle): Abia had the lowest average at ₦2,024.41.
  • National averages included tomatoes at ₦1,177.92 per kg and brown beans at ₦1,338.93 per kg.

So the same basket can be cheap for one item and dear for another. Buying garri in bulk at harvest and palm oil locally is one way to use the pattern. Check the latest NBS Selected Food Prices Watch before you rely on these figures.

Example basket

Example: 5 kg of garri at ₦1,075.47 per kg is about ₦5,377; one bottle of palm oil at ₦2,024.41 and 2 kg of beans at ₦1,338.93 per kg (₦2,678) bring the total to about ₦10,080. Market prices on the day may be higher or lower than these averages.

Drugs and cosmetics

If you buy medicines in a market, be careful. NAFDAC said in 2025 that coordinated wholesale centres for drug distribution were under construction in Lagos, Aba and Kano, as part of moving drug sales out of open markets. Buy medicines from a registered pharmacy and check the NAFDAC number on the pack.

Shopping safely and paying

  • Carry small notes; change can be scarce.
  • Confirm a transfer has landed before the trader releases goods, and as a buyer, pay only after you have inspected what you are taking.
  • Watch your phone and bag in crowded lines.
  • Agree the price before the goods are bagged.

Cash is limited in Aba on busy days; see banks, ATMs and cash in Aba. For monthly budgets, see the cost of living in Aba.

Planning a market trip

Aba's markets are large and crowded, and a trip without a plan usually costs more in time and transport than it saves on price. A few habits help, whichever market you choose.

  1. Write a list with quantities before you leave, and group it by market so you are not crossing the city twice.
  2. Go to one line first and compare. Ask two or three sellers on the same line for the same item before you buy; prices for identical goods can differ noticeably a few stalls apart.
  3. Use the same sellers over time. Regular customers are commonly offered better prices, honest weights and the option to set goods aside.
  4. Arrange transport home for bulky items before you buy them; carrying a bag of garri or a bale of fabric across a market is slow and tiring.
  5. Leave time for traffic. Roads around the big markets slow down sharply on busy days.

Bargaining without being overcharged

Bargaining is normal in Aba markets. Good bargaining is less about pushing the price as low as possible and more about knowing what an item is worth and checking what you get.

  • Know the going price from your own price list or from asking several sellers.
  • Check measures. For foodstuff sold by the paint bucket, mudu or cup, look at the measure being used; for fabric, watch the yards being counted.
  • Inspect before paying. Open bags, check fabric for flaws and test electronics in front of the seller.
  • Ask for a receipt or written note for larger purchases, with the seller's name, shop and phone number, in case you need to return something.
  • Keep your transfer records. If you pay by transfer, the record in your banking app is your proof of payment.

For wholesale buying at Ariaria, see how to buy wholesale at Ariaria, and for common tricks traders and buyers meet, see common scams in Aba.

Where Pryme fits

You can pay traders by bank transfer from a Pryme account and keep a Savings Box for monthly foodstuff. Spaces, Pryme's merchant network, includes grocery and retail merchants in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt; it does not yet operate in Aba.

Questions people ask

Which market in Aba sells foodstuff cheapest?

Shoppers commonly use Cemetery Market and Ahia Ohuru for foodstuff. Prices change daily, so compare two stalls and shop early.

Where can I buy lace and ankara in Aba?

Eziukwu (Ekeoha) Market is commonly mentioned for fabrics. Compare prices per yard across several shops.

Is garri expensive in Abia?

In NBS data for April 2026, Abia had the highest average price of white garri in Nigeria, ₦1,075.47 per kg.

Is Ahia Ohuru the same as New Market Aba?

Yes, Ahia Ohuru means New Market in Igbo and is commonly called New Market.
