Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Accounting software that handles naira: what to check

What to check before choosing accounting software for a business with naira and foreign currency accounts: NGN support, plan tiers, VAT and bank data.

The short answer

Before choosing software, check that naira (NGN) is in its currency list and that multicurrency is included in the plan you will pay for, that it revalues foreign balances, that it can produce the VAT and withholding tax records Nigerian law expects, and how bank transactions get in: a direct feed, a file import or manual entry. Test with one month of real data before committing.

Most accounting software is built for a home currency, with other currencies added on. For a diaspora-owned business that runs a Nigerian company, or keeps naira and pounds side by side, those add-ons decide whether the books work. This guide lists the checks, with what the vendors' own pages say where we could confirm it.

1. Naira and multicurrency on your plan

Check two separate things: that NGN is in the currency list, and that your plan includes multicurrency at all. Plan tiers often decide the second. Xero's UK page (October 2026) says multiple currencies are available only on its Comprehensive and Ultimate plans, not Ignite or Grow, and lists more than 160 currencies with rates updated hourly. Xero's US page puts multiple currencies on its Established plan only. Confirm NGN in the vendor's own currency list before you buy; we have not confirmed each vendor's list.

Also ask whether turning on multicurrency can be reversed, and whether the base currency can be changed later. A Nigerian company reporting in naira and a foreign company reporting in pounds may need separate files.

2. Exchange rates and revaluation

IAS 21 requires foreign currency transactions to be recorded at the spot rate on the transaction date (an average is allowed only where rates do not fluctuate significantly) and monetary balances to be translated at the closing rate at each reporting date. Check that the software:

  • Lets you override the rate on a transaction with the rate your bank actually applied.
  • Runs a month-end revaluation of foreign balances and posts unrealised gains and losses.
  • Separates realised and unrealised exchange differences in reports.
  • Records the rate source and date on each entry.

See which naira rate to use in your books and keeping multicurrency books.

3. Nigerian tax records

  • VAT: Nigeria's VAT rate is 7.5%. Software must handle standard-rated, zero-rated and exempt items and produce the monthly return figures. Under the 2025 tax laws, Forvis Mazars (March 2026) notes small businesses (turnover up to ₦100 million and fixed assets up to ₦250 million, professional services excluded) are exempt from VAT registration and filing, and input VAT on services and fixed assets used for taxable supplies is now claimable. Some readings of the Tax Administration Act give a lower turnover figure for the VAT filing exemption, so confirm the threshold with your accountant before switching VAT off in the software.
  • Invoices: check the invoice template can show every field s.153 of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 requires (supplier tax ID, registration number, invoice number, date of supply, purchaser, gross amount, VAT and rate).
  • E-invoicing: larger taxpayers must issue e-invoices through the Revenue Service's Merchant Buyer Solution via approved Access Point Providers; The Guardian (July 2026) reported medium taxpayers onboarding from July 2026 and full adoption targeted for January 2028. Ask whether the vendor integrates with an approved provider or exports in a usable format.
  • Withholding tax: the software should record tax deducted from supplier payments and help match the receipts you issue.

4. Bank data

Ask how transactions from your Nigerian bank get into the software: a direct bank feed, a third-party connector, or a CSV or statement import. Direct feeds for Nigerian banks are not something we could confirm for the main international products, so test the import route with a real statement. Check that narrations, references and session IDs survive the import; reconciliation depends on them.

5. Access and control

  • User roles: can your accountant post journals while staff only upload receipts?
  • Audit trail: does it show who changed what and when?
  • Data location and export: can you export everything if you leave? Staff and customer data are covered by the Nigeria Data Protection Act; see moving Nigerian staff data abroad.
  • Pricing in which currency, and how increases are applied.

Local or international product?

Some Nigerian accountants prefer products built locally, which may handle naira-first VAT and withholding tax layouts out of the box; international products may suit you better if your accountant abroad already uses them for your foreign company. Neither is right by default. The deciding questions are practical: which product your Nigerian accountant can work in every month, whether both companies can be reported side by side, and whether you can export the full ledger if you change your mind. Ask for a trial on the plan you would actually buy, not a demo account.

A 30-day test

  1. Load one month of real transactions from each account.
  2. Enter five sales invoices and five supplier bills, including one in a foreign currency.
  3. Reconcile each bank account to the statement.
  4. Run a month-end revaluation.
  5. Produce a VAT summary and a withholding tax list.
  6. Ask your accountant to review the output before you commit.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each (business multicurrency), with invoicing built in, and the Finance agent prepares reconciliations and reports for a person to review, whichever accounting software your accountant prefers.

Questions people ask

Does Xero support naira?

Xero says it supports more than 160 currencies, but multicurrency is only on certain plans (Comprehensive and Ultimate in the UK, Established in the US, as at October 2026). Confirm NGN in Xero's own currency list before buying.

Can accounting software connect directly to Nigerian banks?

We could not confirm direct feeds for Nigerian banks on the main international products. Test the statement import with your own bank file before committing.

Do I need special software for Nigerian e-invoicing?

Large and, in time, medium taxpayers must issue e-invoices through the Revenue Service's system via approved providers. Ask your software vendor whether it integrates with one.

What VAT rate should be set up for Nigeria?

The standard rate is 7.5%, with zero-rated and exempt categories and a small business exemption under the 2025 tax laws.
