Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Accessing 25% of RSA after leaving Nigeria for the US

Who can take a quarter of their RSA after leaving a Nigerian job for the US: the four-month rule, the grey area, data recapture and documents.

The short answer

The Pension Reform Act 2014 lets an RSA holder under 50 who leaves employment, and is not re-employed within four months, take a lump sum of up to 25% of the RSA balance, once in a lifetime. Moving to the US is not itself a ground for withdrawal; the test is leaving the Nigerian job and the four-month period. Your PFA decides the application, and you must have completed PenCom's data recapture first.

For many people who relocate, the RSA left behind is a meaningful sum, and the question is whether any of it can be reached before 50. The answer turns on the Act's job-loss rule, not on emigration. This guide sets out what the rule says, the grey area for people who start work abroad, and what to prepare before you apply from the US.

What the law says

Summaries of the Pension Reform Act 2014 by KPMG and others describe the rule this way: an RSA holder who retires, resigns or is disengaged before age 50, and does not get another job within four months, may withdraw a lump sum of not more than 25% of the RSA balance. The 2014 Act widened the earlier rule, which covered only involuntary job loss after six months, to include people who resign. PFAs describe it as available once in a lifetime, with the rest of the balance reachable at retirement or from age 50.

ConditionWhat it means for you
Under 50Above 50 you are in the retirement benefit rules instead
Left employmentYour Nigerian employer's exit letter is the evidence
Not re-employed within 4 monthsThe four months run from the date you left
Up to 25% of balanceCalculated on the RSA balance when the PFA processes it
Once in a lifetimeYou cannot take a second 25% after a later job

The grey area: a new job in the US

The Act's wording refers to not securing another job within four months. It does not, in the summaries we read, say whether a job outside Nigeria counts. Your PFA may ask for a declaration that you have not been re-employed; if you started work in the US within four months of leaving, a truthful declaration may rule you out. Ask your PFA, in writing, how it treats employment abroad before you apply, and keep its answer. Do not sign a declaration you cannot stand behind.

Before you apply: data recapture

PFAs require a successful data recapture before any benefit is paid. PenCom's FAQ says recapture applies to RSAs registered before 1 July 2019, is free, needs your NIN, and cannot be done by proxy. The documents listed include an ID (staff ID, driver's licence, voter's card or passport), your NIN, a birth certificate or declaration of age and your employment letter. Because biometrics are involved, ask your PFA whether it has a remote or diaspora route before planning a trip home; see updating your RSA details from the US.

What to prepare

  1. Your RSA PIN and the name of your PFA.
  2. Proof of recapture, or a date to complete it.
  3. Your exit letter (resignation acceptance or disengagement letter) showing the date you left.
  4. A valid ID, usually your Nigerian passport.
  5. A Nigerian bank account in your name for the payment, as the PFA requires.
  6. The PFA's own application form and any declaration on re-employment.

Avoid paid fixers

Benefit applications are processed by PFAs, and PenCom has said publicly (reported by Blueprint in May 2024) that its staff will never ask for money to facilitate a payment, warning about fraudsters posing as PenCom staff. Deal only with your PFA's official channels, never pay a 'processing fee' to a personal account, and be wary of anyone in Nigeria or on social media offering to speed up a 25% claim for you.

Tax and the US side

The Act treats voluntary contributions differently from mandatory ones: income on voluntary contributions withdrawn within five years is taxable in Nigeria. For the US, a US citizen or resident reports worldwide income, and how a Nigerian pension lump sum is treated is covered in is a Nigerian pension taxable in the US. If the money lands in a Nigerian account, remember that naira balances count towards the FBAR threshold. For the wider picture, see your Nigerian RSA while living in the US and the related guide on RSA withdrawal on permanent relocation.

Where Pryme fits

A PFA pays a lump sum to a Nigerian bank account in your name. A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from the US and has naira account details alongside dollars (multicurrency account), with naira deposits held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank; check with your PFA that it will pay to the account you nominate. You can then keep the money in naira or convert it with Swap when you choose.

Questions people ask

Can I withdraw 25% of my pension because I moved to America?

Relocation alone is not the ground. The 25% rule applies if you left your Nigerian job before 50 and were not re-employed within four months. Ask your PFA how it treats a job abroad.

How many times can I take the 25% RSA withdrawal?

PFAs describe it as once in a lifetime. The rest of the balance stays in the RSA until retirement or age 50.

Can someone do my pension data recapture for me in Nigeria?

PenCom's FAQ says recapture cannot be done by proxy. Ask your PFA whether it offers a remote or diaspora route.

How long after leaving my job can I apply for 25%?

After four months without re-employment, counted from the date you left, with your exit letter as evidence.
