Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Agricultural cooperatives in Nigeria: vetting them from the US

How to check an agricultural cooperative or farm investment scheme in Nigeria from the US: registration, bye-laws, audit, membership rules and SEC status.

The short answer

First establish what you are being offered. A genuine cooperative is registered with a state's Director of Cooperatives, has bye-laws you can inspect, keeps an annual audit and lends only to members; an agric 'investment' that promises you a fixed return is usually a securities offer that needs SEC registration. Ask for the registration certificate, the bye-laws, the last audited accounts and the member list, check them with the state ministry, and treat promised returns above what farming can produce as a warning.

Cooperatives are a real and old part of Nigerian farming: farmers pool money to buy inputs, share equipment and sell together. They are also a label that schemes use because it sounds communal and safe. For an investor in the US, the work is telling the two apart before you send money you cannot easily recover.

What a registered cooperative is

Under the Nigerian Co-operative Societies Act, a registered society is a body corporate, and its certificate of registration is conclusive evidence that it is registered. The Act sets rules that also make good vetting questions:

  • Name: it must include 'Co-operative', end with 'Limited', and may not use the word 'bank'.
  • Size: a primary society needs at least 10 qualifying members.
  • Membership: members must be 16 or older and, as a rule, resident within, or occupying land within, the society's area of operation.
  • Lending: a society may not lend to non-members.
  • Bye-laws: must state how funds are kept and invested, members' liability and what a leaving member is paid; loan bye-laws must set the interest rate, maximum loan and repayment period.
  • Audit: accounts are audited every year by an approved auditor.
  • Reserves: at least a quarter of net profit goes to a reserve fund, and no member may hold more than a fifth of the share capital.
  • Transparency: members may inspect the Act, the bye-laws and the member list free of charge.
  • Disputes: go to the state Director of Cooperatives, who may refer them to an arbitrator.

Cooperatives are registered by states. In Lagos, a 2023 summary by Pavestones Legal describes applications to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives with at least 20 members aged 18 or over, an inaugural meeting attended by a ministry representative and three months of monitoring before a certificate is issued.

The membership question for someone in the US

Because the Act ties membership to residence or land within the society's area, a person living in the US may not qualify as a member of a farming cooperative at all, depending on its bye-laws. If you are not a member, you have no member's rights to inspect records or vote, and the Act bars a society from lending to non-members. Ask to see the membership clause in the bye-laws before anything else. Our guide on investing through a Nigerian cooperative from the US goes further.

When it is an investment scheme, not a cooperative

Many farm 'sponsorship' offers sell you a share of a crop or a flock for a fixed return at harvest. That is an investment offer. The SEC's crowdfunding rules (January 2021, as summarised by Aelex) allow investment-based crowdfunding only through registered portals, with issuers being Nigerian-incorporated small businesses, caps on how much an issuer can raise in 12 months, and a limit on retail investors of 10% of their net annual income a year. The SEC publishes a list of registered fintech operators, including crowdfunding portals. If a platform is not on it, ask what licence it relies on.

The track record of the sector is a caution. In 2020, The Guardian reported that operators of agric crowdfunding platforms themselves warned Nigerians against scams, with one quoted as saying that returns above 30% over a six-month cycle look unrealistic.

Where Pryme fits

If you do proceed with a vetted society or a registered platform, pay its account in its registered name and keep the record. A Pryme Personal Account opened from the US lets you send naira to a named account, and you can generate a verifiable statement through our partner VerifyDoc.ai to evidence what you paid (receipts and statements).

Questions people ask

How do I know a Nigerian cooperative is registered?

Ask for its certificate of registration and confirm the number with the Director of Cooperatives in the state where it is registered. The Act says the certificate is conclusive evidence of registration.

Can I join a farming cooperative in Nigeria while living in the US?

Possibly not. The Act generally requires members to be resident within, or occupy land within, the society's area of operation. Check the membership clause in its bye-laws.

Is an agric investment app the same as a cooperative?

No. A platform selling fixed returns on farms is making an investment offer. Under SEC rules, investment crowdfunding must run through a registered portal; check the SEC's list of registered fintech operators.

What return is realistic for an agric investment in Nigeria?

There is no official figure. Operators quoted by The Guardian in 2020 said returns above 30% over six months look unrealistic, and any fixed promised return deserves scrutiny.
