Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Why fixed deposit rates move with the MPR

How the CBN's Monetary Policy Rate, treasury bill yields and the cash reserve ratio feed into what Nigerian banks offer on fixed deposits.

The short answer

Fixed deposit rates follow the Monetary Policy Rate because the MPR sets the price of money around which banks borrow, lend and buy treasury bills; when the CBN moves it, T-bill yields and banks' funding costs shift, and deposit quotes follow. The CBN cut the MPR from 26.5% to 23% at its 21–22 September 2026 meeting, so new deposit quotes after that date reflect the lower anchor.

Savers often notice fixed deposit quotes changing within days of a Central Bank of Nigeria announcement. That is not a coincidence. This article explains the chain from the Monetary Policy Committee to the rate on your deal slip, why the link is loose rather than exact, and what it means for when you lock money in.

What the MPR is

The Monetary Policy Rate is the CBN's benchmark interest rate, set by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The CBN's monetary policy decisions page records these recent decisions:

MPC meetingMPRCorridor around MPRCash reserve ratio (deposit money banks)
19–20 May 2026 (305th)26.5% (retained)+50 / −450 basis pointsSee CBN page
20–21 July 2026 (306th)26.5% (retained)+50 / −450 basis pointsSee CBN page
21–22 September 2026 (307th)23% (reset)+50 / −300 basis points45% retained (merchant banks 16%)

The corridor is the band around the MPR within which the CBN prices its standing facilities for banks. As at September 2026, +50/−300 basis points around 23% puts the top of the band at 23.5% and the bottom at 20%. For how the committee decides, see how the CBN sets interest rates.

The chain from MPR to your deposit

  1. The CBN moves the MPR and corridor. This changes what banks can earn on spare cash placed with the CBN and what they pay to borrow from it.
  2. Treasury bill yields respond. T-bills are where banks park large amounts of naira. When the policy anchor falls, investors usually accept lower yields at auctions, and vice versa. See how MPC decisions move T-bill yields.
  3. Deposits must compete with those alternatives. A bank will not pay depositors much more than it can earn by putting the money into bills or loans. If bill yields fall, deposit quotes tend to follow.
  4. Your quote changes. New fixed deposits are priced off the bank's current funding needs, which now reflect the new level.

Why the cash reserve ratio matters too

The cash reserve ratio (CRR) is the share of deposits a bank must keep with the CBN. The CBN retained it at 45% for deposit money banks at the September 2026 meeting. In simple terms, of every ₦100 a commercial bank takes in deposits, ₦45 must be held at the CBN, leaving ₦55 to lend or invest. A deposit that a bank can only partly use is worth less to it, which helps explain why fixed deposit rates can sit well below T-bill yields and the MPR at the same time. A change in the CRR can move deposit pricing even when the MPR stays still.

  • Each bank's funding needs differ. A bank short of naira may pay more than peers regardless of the MPR.
  • Deposit size matters. Large deposits are often priced individually; Sterling Bank, for example, calls its fixed deposit rate "negotiable and competitive". Small deposits tend to follow a standard rate that may change less often.
  • Expectations move first. If markets expect a cut, T-bill yields and deposit quotes can drift down before the MPC meets.
  • Inflation shapes the real return. A rate can rise and still lose value after inflation; see real interest rates.

What it means for timing

A fixed deposit locks its rate for the tenor. Rate changes after you place it do not affect it until maturity. That gives savers a simple rule of thumb: when rates are expected to fall, a longer tenor keeps the higher rate for longer; when rates are expected to rise, shorter tenors let you reprice sooner. Nobody knows the next MPC decision for certain, so many savers split money across tenors.

Example with illustrative rates: a saver places ₦5,000,000 for 180 days at 20% shortly before an MPR cut. If new 180-day quotes fall to 17% afterwards, the saver keeps 20% until maturity; the cut affects them only when they come to roll over.

For the trade-off between tenors, see choosing a fixed deposit tenor.

Reading an MPC announcement as a saver

When the CBN publishes a decision, three numbers matter to depositors: the MPR itself, the corridor and the cash reserve ratio. A cut in the MPR or a narrower gap below it signals cheaper money and usually lower deposit quotes ahead. A higher CRR leaves banks less of each deposit to use, which can weigh on what they pay. If you have a deposit maturing soon after a meeting, ask your bank for a quote both before and after the announcement so you can see the effect for yourself rather than relying on headlines.

Where Pryme fits

Rates on Pryme's Fixed and Investment Boxes are set in the app and can change as market conditions change; the current figure is shown before you commit, and we do not quote it here. Investment Box money funds Solid Allianze MFB's lending, so its return depends on that lending. See Savings Boxes.

Questions people ask

What is the current MPR in Nigeria?

As at the CBN's 21–22 September 2026 MPC meeting, the MPR was reset to 23%, down from 26.5%. Check the CBN's monetary policy decisions page for any later change.

Will fixed deposit rates fall after the MPR cut?

New quotes usually follow over time, because T-bill yields and banks' funding costs adjust. Deposits already placed keep their rate until maturity.

Why is my fixed deposit rate lower than the MPR?

Banks must hold part of deposits with the CBN under the cash reserve ratio, 45% for deposit money banks as at September 2026, and price deposits against what they can earn elsewhere.

Should I lock in a fixed deposit before an MPR cut?

A longer tenor keeps a higher rate if rates then fall, but no one knows the decision in advance. Many savers spread money across tenors.
