Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Who regulates crypto in Nigeria: SEC, CBN and the law

The ISA 2025 puts crypto under the SEC, the CBN let banks serve licensed VASPs from December 2023, and exchanges sit in an SEC incubator.

The short answer

The SEC regulates crypto in Nigeria: the Investments and Securities Act 2025 treats virtual and digital assets as securities and requires virtual asset service providers to register with the SEC. The CBN's December 2023 guidelines replaced its 2021 directive and let banks open accounts for SEC-licensed VASPs, though banks still cannot trade crypto themselves.

The current position

Body or lawRole in crypto
SEC NigeriaRegisters and supervises VASPs and digital asset exchanges; runs the ARIP incubation programme
Investments and Securities Act 2025Defines securities to include virtual and digital assets; makes VASP registration mandatory
CBNSets rules on bank accounts for VASPs; bans banks from trading crypto on their own account
Tax lawGains on digital assets are taxable (see below)

How the CBN position changed

In February 2021 the CBN directed banks and other financial institutions to close accounts of people transacting in crypto. On 22 December 2023 it issued Guidelines on Operations of Bank Accounts for Virtual Asset Service Providers, which replaced that directive, as reported by the ICIR. Under the guidelines, a VASP must present its SEC licence to open a bank account, and banks may provide settlement accounts. Banks and other financial institutions remain prohibited from holding, trading or transacting in virtual currencies on their own account.

The ISA 2025 and the SEC

President Tinubu signed the ISA 2025 on 29 March 2025, repealing the 2007 Act. Section 357 defines securities to include virtual and digital assets, and digital assets may be offered to the public only after SEC registration, according to a Mondaq analysis by Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie. The SEC's own website now has a crypto policy page and lists approved digital platforms on its fintech page.

ARIP: incubation, not full licence

The SEC's Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP) fast-tracks VASPs. Its page states fees of ₦200,000 for initial assessment and ₦2,000,000 for application processing, and says approval is an approval-in-principle (AIP), which is conditional. After incubation a firm moves to full registration or receives corrective guidance. The SEC's fintech page lists Busha and Quidax under ARIP as digital asset exchanges, and Tech Africa News reported in July 2026 that Luno Nigeria was admitted to ARIP. We could not confirm any exchange holding full SEC registration as at October 2026.

Tax

A Mariblock report on the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 says profits from digital asset transactions are treated as chargeable gains taxed as income, up to 25% for individuals, replacing the 10% capital gains tax under the Finance Act 2022. Confirm with a tax adviser; this is information, not advice.

What it means for ordinary users

Buying and holding crypto as an individual is not banned. The rules bite on the platforms: an exchange serving Nigerians should be registered with, or at least admitted to incubation by, the SEC, and should bank with a Nigerian bank under the CBN guidelines. If a platform cannot show either, your naira deposits and withdrawals depend on arrangements no Nigerian regulator oversees. Peer-to-peer trades with strangers carry extra risk: if the other side's money came from fraud, your account can be restricted while banks and investigators check the funds. Keep records of every trade, the counterparty and the bank account used.

What to check first

  1. Is the platform on the SEC's registered fintech list, and with what status (AIP or full)?
  2. Does it bank with a Nigerian bank under the CBN guidelines?
  3. Do you keep records of buys and sells for tax?
  4. Is anyone promising fixed returns? Under the ISA 2025, Ponzi schemes carry heavy penalties; see investment scams.

More: checking a firm with the SEC and ISA 2025 Ponzi penalties.

Questions people ask

Is crypto legal in Nigeria?

Yes, within the SEC's framework. The ISA 2025 treats digital assets as securities, and VASPs must register with the SEC.

Did CBN lift the crypto ban?

In December 2023 the CBN replaced its 2021 directive with guidelines letting banks open accounts for SEC-licensed VASPs. Banks still cannot trade crypto on their own account.

Which crypto exchanges are approved by SEC?

The SEC lists Busha and Quidax under its ARIP incubation programme, and Luno Nigeria was reported admitted in July 2026. These are approvals-in-principle, not full registration.

Is crypto profit taxed in Nigeria?

Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, as reported by Mariblock, digital asset gains are taxed as income, up to 25% for individuals.
