Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Which savings apps in Nigeria are NDIC-insured?

NDIC covers bank deposits, not every app. How MFB-based apps, mobile money operators and SEC-regulated fund apps are treated, and the limits.

The short answer

NDIC insures deposits at licensed banks: up to ₦5,000,000 per depositor at a deposit money bank and ₦2,000,000 at a microfinance bank. Apps that hold your money as a microfinance bank deposit, such as Kuda and OPay, fall under the ₦2,000,000 limit; mobile money operator balances can get pass-through cover under conditions; SEC-regulated fund apps such as Cowrywise are investments and not covered.

NDIC covers bank deposits, not every app

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits in licensed banks. You do not apply for this cover; it comes with an eligible account at an insured bank. A savings app is covered only to the extent that your money is a deposit in such a bank, and then only up to that bank’s limit. Money placed in a mutual fund or other investment is not a deposit, so NDIC cover does not apply to it. The first question about any app is therefore not “is it insured?” but “where is my money, and is it a deposit?”.

The limits

Institution typeMaximum cover per depositor
Deposit money banks (including non-interest banks)₦5,000,000
Primary mortgage banks₦5,000,000 in NDIC’s FAQ; reported as ₦2,000,000 by Arise News in May 2024
Microfinance banks₦2,000,000
Mobile money operator customers (pass-through, in pooled accounts at a deposit money bank)₦5,000,000 per subscriber, subject to conditions

The deposit money bank and microfinance bank limits were raised in May 2024 with immediate effect, as reported by Arise News, and appear in NDIC’s FAQs. The two sources differ on primary mortgage banks, so check NDIC directly if that applies to you. Cover is naira for naira and includes interest accrued to the date the bank closes. See NDIC deposit insurance limits explained.

How common app models are treated

Apps that hold deposits at a microfinance bank
Kuda says deposits are held by Kuda Microfinance Bank; OPay says OWealth is powered by OPay Microfinance Bank. Deposits there fall under the microfinance bank limit. Kuda’s own pages still show the old ₦200,000 figure.
Mobile money operators
NDIC’s FAQ says MMOs themselves are not covered; their customers’ money in pooled or trust accounts at insured banks can get pass-through cover if conditions such as bare trust, fidelity bond, records and disclosure are met. PalmPay describes itself as a CBN-licensed MMO and says deposits are insured by the NDIC without naming the bank.
SEC-regulated fund apps
Cowrywise says it holds an SEC fund-management licence; mutual funds are investments, not deposits, so NDIC cover does not apply. Protection comes from trustees, custodians and SEC supervision instead.
Apps that do not state where funds sit
PiggyVest’s terms refer to unnamed banking partners and make no NDIC statement. Ask the app in writing which institution holds your money and on what basis.

Rules that decide how much is covered

  • Cover is per depositor per bank. All branches of one bank count as one institution, so balances are added together.
  • Each bank is insured separately, so money split across two banks is covered at each up to the limit.
  • A joint account with a valid mandate is insured separately from each owner’s individual accounts.
  • Payment happens only if the bank is closed; NDIC may pay by transfer to another bank, cheque or e-payment.
  • Any balance above the limit is paid pro rata from the failed bank’s liquidation, alongside other creditors.

Worked example (illustrative)

Example only. You hold ₦3,000,000 in savings at one microfinance bank through an app. If that bank were closed, NDIC would pay up to ₦2,000,000. The other ₦1,000,000 would depend on what is recovered in liquidation. If you had instead kept ₦1,500,000 at each of two microfinance banks, each balance would be within the limit.

Questions to ask your app in writing

If an app’s help centre does not answer these clearly, send them to its support team and keep the reply:

  • Which licensed institution holds my balance, by full legal name?
  • Is my balance a deposit in my name, or held in a pooled or trust account?
  • If pooled, does the arrangement meet NDIC’s pass-through conditions?
  • Is any part of my money invested, for example in funds or bills, rather than held as a deposit?
  • Does the product I use change that answer? Flexible, locked and dollar products can sit in different places.

A clear written answer helps you decide how much to keep in one place and is useful evidence if anything goes wrong.

What to check first

  1. Find the name of the bank that holds your money, in the app’s terms or help centre.
  2. Check that bank on NDIC’s list of insured institutions.
  3. Decide whether your product is a deposit or an investment.
  4. Add up all your balances at that bank, including those held through other apps.

NDIC’s help desk lines and email are on its FAQ page. Is PalmPay CashBox safe and is OWealth safe apply this to specific apps.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Financial is a technology company, not a bank. Naira deposits made through Pryme are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. See how Pryme works.

Questions people ask

Is PiggyVest insured by NDIC?

PiggyVest’s terms make no NDIC statement and refer to unnamed banking partners. Ask PiggyVest which institution holds your money.

Is Kuda NDIC-insured?

Kuda says deposits are held by Kuda Microfinance Bank and are NDIC-insured. NDIC’s microfinance bank limit is ₦2,000,000 per depositor, raised in May 2024.

Are mutual funds covered by NDIC?

No. Mutual funds are investments regulated by the SEC, not bank deposits.

How much does NDIC pay if a bank fails?

Up to ₦5,000,000 per depositor at a deposit money bank and ₦2,000,000 at a microfinance bank, including accrued interest.
