Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Safety

Someone asked for your 6-digit WhatsApp code: what to do

Why the WhatsApp six-digit code is the key to your account, how hijackers ask for it, how to take your account back and how to stop a repeat.

The short answer

The six-digit code WhatsApp sends by SMS is the registration code for your number: whoever enters it can set up your WhatsApp on their phone and message your contacts as you. Never share it. If you already have, open WhatsApp and re-register with your number to get a fresh code, which logs the other phone out, then turn on two-step verification.

What the code is for

When anyone installs WhatsApp and types in a phone number, WhatsApp sends a six-digit code by SMS to that number to confirm the person setting it up controls the line. Singapore's Cyber Security Agency (CSA), in an advisory on WhatsApp hijacking, describes the scam simply: the fraudster tries to add your number to WhatsApp on their own phone, WhatsApp sends the code to you, and the fraudster then tricks you into handing it over.

So a text saying 'your WhatsApp code is 123-456' that you did not request means someone, somewhere, is trying to register your number. The code is useless to them unless you share it.

How they ask

  • From a friend's account. 'Hi, I sent you a code by mistake, please forward it.' The CSA notes scammers often get your number from an account they have already hijacked, so the message comes from someone you know.
  • As WhatsApp support. 'Your account will be suspended, send the verification code to confirm ownership.' The CSA lists posing as WhatsApp support among the scammers' tactics.
  • As a promotion. The CSA describes fake lucky draws or flash sales that ask for a 'promotional code', which is really your WhatsApp code.
  • Through voicemail. If you do not answer, the fraudster asks WhatsApp to read the code by voice call. The CSA warns that if your phone is off or unattended, often at night, the call goes to voicemail, and default voicemail PINs can let the fraudster retrieve it.

What happens once they have it

  1. Your WhatsApp is registered on their phone and logs out on yours.
  2. The CSA says they can then turn on two-step verification themselves to lock you out.
  3. They message your contacts and groups asking for money, airtime or more codes, so the chain continues. See the recharge request scam and hacked WhatsApp money requests.

If you received the code but did not share it

You are safe for now. Without the code, the other phone cannot finish registering your number. Do not reply to the person asking, and do not forward the SMS anywhere. Call the friend whose account sent the request, on their normal number, because their WhatsApp has probably already been taken over and they may not know. Then turn on two-step verification yourself, so that if the fraudster tries again and somehow obtains a code, they still cannot get in without your PIN.

If you have already shared it: steps to take back your account

  1. Re-register now. Open WhatsApp on your phone and sign in again with your number. A fresh code arrives by SMS; entering it logs the other device out, according to the CSA.
  2. If you are asked for a two-step PIN you never set, the fraudster set one. The CSA says you may have to wait seven days before you can sign in without that PIN. Keep trying to register after the wait.
  3. Warn your contacts by SMS, calls or another platform that any message from your WhatsApp in this period is not from you.
  4. Check your phone line is still yours. If calls and texts stop arriving, your SIM may have been swapped; contact your network urgently. See SIM swap fraud.
  5. Check your banking. If you use WhatsApp banking or discussed your account in chats, tell your bank and watch for OTPs.
  6. Report suspicious numbers to WhatsApp, as the CSA advises, and to the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre e-reporting portal if money was taken from you or your contacts.

The CSA also notes that deleting and reinstalling WhatsApp removes your chat history unless you have a working backup, so re-registering on the same installation is usually the better first step.

Stop it happening again

  • Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp's settings and add a backup email, as the CSA recommends. A PIN you choose is then needed as well as the SMS code.
  • Change your voicemail PIN. The NCC's harmonised codes list 301 and 302 as the short codes for voicemail deposit and retrieval; ask your network how to set your own voicemail PIN, or have voicemail turned off if you do not use it.
  • Treat any request for a code as a scam, whether for WhatsApp, your bank or a fintech. See the OTP call scam.
  • Verify through another channel. If a friend asks for a code or money, call them.

Where Pryme fits

Codes sent by SMS can be intercepted or talked out of you, which is why Pryme uses an authenticator app rather than SMS codes for account security, plus a transaction PIN for payments (Pryme security). Keep your authenticator and PIN to yourself in the same way.

Questions people ask

Someone sent me a WhatsApp code by mistake and is asking for it, should I send it?

No. There is no such thing as a code sent by mistake to you. Someone is trying to register your number on their phone. Ignore the request and warn the friend by phone.

I gave out my WhatsApp code, how do I get my account back?

Open WhatsApp and re-register with your number to receive a new SMS code. Entering it logs the other phone out. If a two-step PIN you never set is requested, you may need to wait seven days.

How do I stop my WhatsApp being hacked?

Turn on two-step verification with a PIN and backup email, change your default voicemail PIN, and never share any code you receive.

Why am I getting WhatsApp codes I did not request?

Someone is entering your number into WhatsApp on another phone. The code is useless to them unless you share it, so ignore it, and turn on two-step verification.
