Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

W-8BEN or W-9: what a Nigerian client asks a US freelancer

A Nigerian client sent you a W-8BEN or asked for a W-9. Why they ask, which form a US person signs, and what to send instead when neither fits.

The short answer

If you are a US citizen or US tax resident, including a green card holder, the IRS form that fits you is the W-9, which gives your taxpayer identification number to someone who must file an information return. The W-8BEN is for foreign persons certifying foreign status, so a US person should not sign one. A Nigerian client usually asks because it has a US entity, uses a US payment platform, or is following a template.

The request often arrives in an onboarding email from a Lagos startup or agency: "Please complete the attached W-8BEN." For a freelancer who lives and pays tax in the US, that form is the wrong one. Signing it is not a formality. Below is what each form does, why a Nigerian business might be asking, and how to reply. This is information, not tax advice.

What each form is for

Form W-9
The IRS says it is used to give your correct taxpayer identification number (TIN) to a person who is required to file an information return with the IRS, such as a payer reporting income paid to you. US persons, including resident aliens, use it.
Form W-8BEN
The IRS describes it as a Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding and Reporting (Individuals). It is given to the withholding agent or payer by a foreign person who is the beneficial owner of an amount subject to withholding.
Form W-8BEN-E
The entity version, used by foreign entities to document their status, per the IRS page.

Publication 515 explains why the W-8BEN matters to payers: most US-source income paid to a foreign person is subject to 30% withholding unless a treaty reduces it, and the W-8BEN is how a foreign individual certifies their status. A US person signing it would be certifying something untrue.

Why a Nigerian client asks at all

A business with no US presence has no US information-return duties, so the question is usually a sign of something else:

  • The client has a US entity. Many Nigerian startups sit under a Delaware parent. If the US company pays you, it may need to file a Form 1099-NEC, so it asks for a W-9. See Nigerian startups with a Delaware holding company.
  • The client pays through a US platform that requires tax documentation from payees.
  • A template. Finance teams that pay many foreign contractors send W-8BEN to everyone abroad. From Lagos, you are "abroad".
  • They actually need something Nigerian. A Nigerian company deducting withholding tax may want your details for its own records. That is a different question, covered in Nigerian clients asking for a TIN.

How to reply

  1. Ask which company is paying you and where it is registered. The contract and the invoice should name the same entity.
  2. If a US entity pays you and you are a US person, send a W-9 through a secure channel, not plain email if you can avoid it.
  3. If a Nigerian entity pays you, explain that you are a US tax resident, that the W-8BEN does not apply to you, and ask what they need it for. Usually a signed invoice with your name, address and business details settles it.
  4. Keep a copy of whatever you send and the email asking for it.

What happens on the Nigerian side

Separately from US forms, a Nigerian client may deduct Nigerian withholding tax from your fee. PwC's Nigeria summary (reviewed 29 May 2026) lists 10% for non-residents on consultancy, technical, management and professional fees under the 2024 regulations. If that happens, ask for the withholding tax receipt: it is the document you would need if you look at a foreign tax credit on your US return. See Nigerian withholding tax on fees paid to a US freelancer.

A short example

Example only. A fintech registered in Lagos, with a Delaware parent, wants to pay you $3,000 a month for product design. Its onboarding pack contains a W-8BEN. You ask which entity will sign the contract. If it is the Lagos company, you reply that the W-8BEN does not apply to a US tax resident and send your invoice details. If it is the Delaware parent, you send a W-9, and expect a Form 1099-NEC from it after year end. Either way, all of it is your business income on Schedule C.

If you have already signed the wrong form

It happens: a busy week, a form sent from a trusted client, a signature without reading. If you are a US person and signed a W-8BEN, tell the client in writing that it was completed in error, ask them to withdraw it, and supply a W-9 if a US entity needs one. Keep the correspondence. The W-8BEN certifies foreign status, so leaving an incorrect one on file can cause problems if the payer ever relies on it for withholding or reporting decisions.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not complete tax forms for you. A Pryme Business Account gives you USD and NGN details in one place, so a client in either country can pay you locally, and invoicing keeps the paying entity's name on each invoice. The Compliance agent can prepare a checklist of the documents each client has asked for; you approve what is sent.

Questions people ask

Should a US citizen sign a W-8BEN for a Nigerian client?

No. The W-8BEN certifies foreign status. US persons, including green card holders, use the W-9 where a payer needs their TIN.

Why does my Nigerian client want a W-9?

Usually because a US entity in its group is paying you and must file information returns, or because it pays through a US platform that requires it.

Is a green card holder a US person for W-9 purposes?

Yes. A green card holder is a resident alien for US tax, and resident aliens give a W-9, not a W-8BEN.

Does a W-9 stop Nigerian withholding tax?

No. A W-9 is a US form. Nigerian withholding tax depends on Nigerian rules; ask the client for the withholding tax receipt if they deduct it.
