Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Verifiable receipts for a Canada–Nigeria audit trail

What CRA and Nigerian tax law expect of records, why receipts across two countries get questioned, and what makes a receipt verifiable.

The short answer

A cross-border audit trail needs the same chain on both sides: a contract or invoice, proof of payment, a receipt and a bank statement that match. The CRA expects records kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to, and Nigeria's Tax Administration Act 2025 sets a minimum of six years too. A verifiable receipt is one that anyone you give it to can check is genuine and unaltered, which saves you proving it by other means when a Nigerian document is questioned.

Why Nigerian receipts get questioned

An auditor in Calgary looking at a ₦2,400,000 payment to a Lagos supplier has three questions: did the payment happen, what was it for, and is this paper what it says it is. A screenshot of a bank app, a scanned receipt with a handwritten amount or a PDF that could have been edited answers the first question badly and the third not at all.

The problem is not that Nigerian suppliers are less careful. It is that the reviewer cannot easily phone the bank or the supplier, the documents are in another currency, and a PDF is easy to alter. Each extra step the reviewer must take adds time and doubt.

What each tax authority expects

Canada (CRA)Nigeria (NTAA 2025 s.31)
How longSix years from the end of the last tax year the records relate toNot less than six years after the year of assessment
WhereAt your place of business or residence in Canada, unless the CRA gives written permissionNot stated in the summary we read
LanguageNot stated on the pageEnglish, with certified translation on demand
WhatRecords that support income and expensesSufficient information on all relevant transactions to determine tax liability

One CRA point catches cross-border businesses: its records page says that records kept outside Canada and merely accessed electronically from Canada are not records kept in Canada. If your Nigerian team holds the originals on a Lagos server, keep a copy under your control in Canada.

The chain that makes a payment auditable

  1. Agreement: a contract, purchase order or quote showing what was bought and the price.
  2. Invoice: from the supplier, with their name, address, tax ID where they have one, date, amount and currency.
  3. Payment: your bank or account record showing the amount, date, payee and reference.
  4. Receipt: confirming the supplier received the money.
  5. Conversion: if you converted CAD to naira, the rate and fee for that conversion.
  6. Ledger entry: the CAD amount in your books, using your stated exchange-rate policy.

Every link should carry a common reference, such as the invoice number, so a reviewer can follow the chain without asking you.

What makes a receipt verifiable

A regular receipt is a statement: "this was paid". A verifiable receipt adds a way for the person holding it to check, independently, that it was issued by the source it claims and has not been changed since. The value is that you no longer have to prove authenticity yourself; the reviewer checks it.

  • It identifies the issuer and the transaction clearly.
  • It can be checked by anyone you share it with, without logging into your account.
  • Any change to the document after issue shows up when it is checked.
  • It is stored with the rest of the chain, not in a chat thread.

Worked example

Example only. A Canadian company pays a Lagos design studio ₦1,500,000 for brand work, after converting CAD 1,250 at an invented rate of ₦1,200. The file holds the signed quote, the studio's invoice INV-114, the payment record referencing INV-114, a verifiable receipt for the payment, and the conversion record. The ledger shows CAD 1,250 as a marketing expense. At review, the auditor checks the receipt, matches the reference and moves on.

When the CRA or a Nigerian tax office asks

Reviews rarely ask for everything at once. A CRA reviewer typically picks a sample of large or unusual expenses and asks for support. A Nigerian tax office reviewing your subsidiary may ask for the other side: evidence that money received from Canada was what the contract said. A file built on the chain above answers both from the same documents, which is the point of keeping one set rather than two.

Respond with the full chain for each item, not just the receipt. If a link is missing, say so and give the next best evidence, such as an email from the supplier confirming receipt, rather than producing a new document after the event.

Practical rules for your team

  • Never pay without an invoice reference in the payment narration.
  • Save documents as PDFs in a shared folder named by year, month and supplier.
  • Ask Nigerian suppliers for receipts in English on letterhead; if a document is in another language, get a translation.
  • Record the exchange rate on the day you pay and keep the source.
  • Reconcile monthly; gaps are easier to fix within weeks than at year end.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme partners with VerifyDoc.ai so that any customer can generate a regular or a verifiable receipt or statement, and anyone can verify that a verifiable one is genuine and unaltered. See receipts and statements. Payments from a Pryme Business Account carry your reference, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve. Questions people ask

How long do I keep Nigerian receipts for the CRA?

Six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to, per the CRA's records page (modified 3 August 2026).

Can my records stay on my Nigerian team's server?

The CRA says records kept outside Canada and accessed electronically from Canada are not records kept in Canada. Keep a copy in Canada or ask the CRA for written permission.

What is the difference between a regular and a verifiable receipt?

A regular receipt states a payment was made; a verifiable one can be checked by anyone you share it with to confirm it is genuine and unaltered.

Does Nigeria have its own record-keeping rule?

Yes. Section 31 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires records in English, kept for not less than six years after the year of assessment.
