Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Using the Home Buyers' Plan as a newcomer

Newcomers can use the RRSP Home Buyers' Plan, but a home you owned and lived in in Nigeria counts against the first-time buyer test. How the dates work.

The short answer

Yes, a newcomer can withdraw up to $60,000 from an RRSP under the Home Buyers' Plan if they are resident in Canada, have a written agreement to buy a qualifying home and meet the first-time buyer test. The catch for many Nigerians: the CRA counts a home outside Canada, so if you lived in a home you or your spouse owned in Nigeria during the current year or the four years before, you do not qualify yet.

The basic conditions

The Home Buyers' Plan (HBP) lets you take money out of your registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) to buy or build a home without paying tax on the withdrawal, as long as you repay it. The CRA's participation page (modified 20 January 2026) sets these conditions:

  • Limit: up to $60,000 in each participation period.
  • Residence: you must be resident in Canada when you withdraw, and stay resident until the home is bought.
  • Written agreement: to buy or build a qualifying home. A mortgage approval on its own does not count.
  • Deadline: the home must generally be acquired or built before 1 October of the year after the first withdrawal.
  • Occupation: you must intend to live in it as your principal residence within one year of buying or building it.
  • Paperwork: Form T1036 for each withdrawal.
  • Repayment: over a 15-year period.

A qualifying home is a housing unit located in Canada, including houses, townhouses, condominium units and apartments, and some co-operative shares that give you equity.

The first-time buyer test, and why Nigeria matters

You generally must not have lived in a qualifying home as your principal residence, owned by you or your current spouse or common-law partner, at any time in the current calendar year before the withdrawal (ignoring the 30 days just before it) or in the four preceding calendar years.

Here is the detail many newcomers miss. The CRA applies the test to a home that would be a qualifying home if it were located in Canada. A flat you owned and lived in in Lekki, or a house your spouse owned in Abuja that you lived in together, counts the same way as a home in Toronto.

What does not count against you

  • Renting in Nigeria. The test is about a home owned by you or your spouse.
  • Living in your parents' house. They own it, not you.
  • Owning land or a house in Nigeria that you never lived in as your principal residence, such as a plot in your home town or a property you let out. The test is about living in an owned home.

Two exceptions: the first-time test does not apply to a specified disabled person, or someone buying for one, and there are special rules if you separated from a spouse in the withdrawal year or the four before it.

A worked example of the dates

Example only. Adaeze owned and lived in a flat in Lekki until she moved to Toronto in March 2023. She becomes a Canadian resident that month.

Withdrawal yearLook-back runs fromDid she live in an owned home in that window?First-time buyer?
20261 Jan 2022Yes, until March 2023No
20271 Jan 2023Yes, January to March 2023No
20281 Jan 2024NoYes, if nothing else changes

Adaeze's earliest HBP year is 2028, even though she has never owned anything in Canada. If she had been renting in Lagos, she could have used the HBP as soon as she was resident and had RRSP savings and a written agreement.

Having RRSP money to withdraw

The HBP only works if there is money in your RRSP. Many newcomers have no RRSP room in their first year because room is based on the previous year's Canadian earned income; see why there is no RRSP room in your first year. The CRA also warns that contributions made in the 89 days before an HBP withdrawal may not be deductible, so a last-minute top-up can lose its tax value.

If the HBP dates do not suit you, compare it with the First Home Savings Account: FHSA eligibility for newcomers.

Repaying

The CRA page sets a 15-year repayment period. Plan the repayments alongside your other commitments, including any regular support to family in Nigeria, and keep track of what you have repaid each year. If you have participated before, you can do so again once your HBP balance is zero on 1 January of the withdrawal year and you meet the other conditions.

What to check first

  1. The date you last lived in a home you or your spouse owned, anywhere in the world.
  2. Your RRSP balance and when the money went in.
  3. That you have a signed agreement, not just a mortgage pre-approval.
  4. That you will still be resident in Canada until the purchase completes.

Where Pryme fits

Savings held in naira, dollars, pounds or euros may form part of a deposit. A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve a conversion; keep statements from receipts. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada notes that the minimum down payment normally has to come from your own funds, so a lender will want to see where the money came from.

Questions people ask

Can a newcomer use the Home Buyers' Plan?

Yes, if you are resident in Canada, have RRSP savings, a written agreement to buy a qualifying home and meet the first-time buyer test.

Does a house I owned in Nigeria stop me using the HBP?

Only if you lived in it as your principal residence in the current year or the four previous years. The CRA counts a home outside Canada as if it were in Canada.

How much can I withdraw under the HBP?

Up to $60,000 per participation period, on the CRA's page modified 20 January 2026.

How long do I have to repay the HBP?

The CRA page gives a 15-year repayment period.
