Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

UK VAT threshold: how a finance agent watches the £90,000 line

UK businesses must register for VAT when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12 months. How an AI finance agent tracks both tests for you.

The short answer

In the UK you must register for VAT if your VAT taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. An AI finance agent can recalculate the rolling total every day from your sales records, warn you as you approach the line and work out the registration deadline. Deciding what counts as taxable turnover in unclear cases, and registering, stays with you or your accountant.

The two tests

GOV.UK sets out two tests for compulsory VAT registration. They are easy to state and easy to miss in practice, because the first one looks backwards over a moving window rather than at your financial year.

TestWhat it asksDeadline if you meet it
Backward lookHas total VAT taxable turnover in the last 12 months gone over £90,000?Register within 30 days of the end of the month in which you went over
Forward lookDo you expect turnover in the next 30 days alone to go over £90,000?Register by the end of that 30-day period

VAT taxable turnover is the total of everything you sell that is not exempt from VAT, including zero-rated sales. It is not profit, and it is not limited to sales where you would charge 20%. The threshold applies to turnover, so a low-margin business can cross it long before it feels large.

Why the rolling window catches people out

  • It is checked at the end of every month, not once a year. A strong quarter can push a business over in a month it was not watching.
  • It ignores your financial year, so year-end figures do not tell you whether you crossed it.
  • Zero-rated sales count. A business selling mostly zero-rated goods may assume it is out of scope when it is not.
  • Seasonal businesses can cross in peak months and drop below later, which does not remove the duty to register once triggered.

Late registration can mean accounting for VAT on sales you made since you should have registered, whether or not you charged customers for it, and HMRC may charge a penalty. That is why the monthly check matters more than the annual one.

What a finance agent can track

This is a good task for an agent because it is a calculation repeated on a fixed rule, with a clear point at which a person must act.

  1. Classify each sale as standard-rated, reduced-rated, zero-rated, exempt or outside the scope of VAT, using rules you and your accountant agree.
  2. Recalculate the rolling 12-month taxable turnover at each month-end, and daily if you want earlier warning.
  3. Warn at levels you choose, for example £75,000 and £85,000, with a projection based on recent months.
  4. Check large expected contracts or orders against the 30-day forward test.
  5. If a test is met, work out the registration deadline and the effective date of registration, and put both in front of you.

What stays with a person

  • Whether an unusual sale is exempt, zero-rated or outside the scope, for example sales to overseas customers or mixed supplies.
  • Whether to register voluntarily below the threshold, which can make sense if your customers are VAT-registered businesses.
  • Pricing: whether to absorb VAT or add it to prices once registered.
  • The registration itself and the choice of any VAT accounting scheme.

A worked example

Example figures only. A Bristol furniture maker sells to both consumers and trade customers. Its rolling 12-month taxable turnover at the end of June is £78,400.

  1. At the end of July the rolling total is £83,900. The agent sends a warning and projects that, at the current rate, the line will be crossed in September.
  2. In August a hotel orders fitted furniture worth £40,000, to be delivered and invoiced in early September. The agent flags the order against the 30-day test: it does not exceed £90,000 alone, so the forward test is not met.
  3. At the end of September the rolling total is £118,200. The backward test is met. The agent records that the threshold was crossed in September, so registration is due within 30 days of 30 September.
  4. The owner and her accountant register, agree the effective date and decide to add VAT to consumer prices from that date. The agent applies VAT to new invoices from the effective date.

After registration

Once registered, most VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file returns through software compatible with Making Tax Digital. Our UK readers may also want to know whether a VAT accounting scheme suits them; see the VAT Flat Rate Scheme and cash and annual accounting. If your turnover later falls, GOV.UK sets a separate, lower deregistration threshold; check the current figure before acting.

Where Pryme fits

The Pryme Finance agent keeps your sales records current across GBP, USD, EUR and NGN accounts, so a threshold calculation draws on all your sales, not only one currency. The Compliance agent keeps an obligations register, so a registration deadline sits with your other filings, and the Chief of Staff brings it to you as a decision. For the general picture, read AI agents for business finance.

Questions people ask

What is the UK VAT registration threshold?

GOV.UK states it is £90,000 of VAT taxable turnover in a rolling 12-month period, or an expectation of going over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. Check GOV.UK for the current figure.

Do zero-rated sales count towards the VAT threshold?

Yes. VAT taxable turnover includes zero-rated sales. Exempt sales and sales outside the scope of VAT do not count.

Is the threshold based on my financial year?

No. It is a rolling 12-month total checked at the end of each month, which is why a monthly calculation is useful.

Can an AI agent register my business for VAT?

It can prepare the information and the deadline. Registration, and decisions such as the effective date and pricing, should be made by you or your accountant.
