Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

VAT Flat Rate Scheme: what a finance agent checks each quarter

The UK VAT Flat Rate Scheme simplifies returns but has limits and a 16.5% limited cost trader rate. What an AI finance agent can check every quarter.

The short answer

Under the UK VAT Flat Rate Scheme you pay HMRC a fixed percentage of your VAT-inclusive turnover instead of working out VAT on each sale and purchase, and you generally cannot reclaim VAT on purchases. You can join if you expect VAT taxable turnover of £150,000 or less in the next 12 months, and businesses that spend very little on goods pay a higher 16.5% rate. An AI finance agent can run the limited cost business test every quarter and track the leaving limits; whether the scheme suits you is a decision for you and your accountant.

How the scheme works

Each business type has a flat rate set by HMRC. You charge customers VAT in the normal way, but your payment to HMRC is your flat rate multiplied by your VAT-inclusive turnover: your sales plus the VAT you charged on them. GOV.UK gives the example of a photographer at an 11% rate: £1,000 of sales plus £200 VAT makes £1,200, and the VAT payment is £132.

  • You generally cannot reclaim VAT on purchases, except certain capital assets over £2,000.
  • You get a 1% discount on your flat rate in your first year as a VAT-registered business.
  • The scheme reduces the work of each return, but it is not always cheaper.

The limits

PointRule on GOV.UK
JoiningExpected VAT taxable turnover in the next 12 months of £150,000 or less, excluding VAT
Leaving on the anniversaryTurnover in the last 12 months over £230,000 including VAT, or expected to be in the next 12 months
Leaving at any timeYou expect total income in the next 30 days alone to exceed £230,000 including VAT
Limited cost businessGoods cost less than 2% of turnover, or less than £1,000 a year if that is higher than 2%; flat rate 16.5%

The limited cost business test

This is the part that most often goes wrong. The test is applied for each VAT return period, not once a year, so a business can be a limited cost business in one quarter and not the next. "Goods" has a narrow meaning in HMRC's guidance: many costs that feel like business purchases do not count, such as services, capital items, food and drink for you or staff, and vehicle costs in most cases. VAT Notice 733 sets out the detail, and HMRC provides an online calculator.

For service businesses with few physical costs, such as consultants, designers and developers, the result is often that they are limited cost businesses and pay 16.5%. At that rate, the scheme may cost more than standard VAT accounting.

What a finance agent can check

  1. Tag each purchase as goods or not goods for the purpose of the test, using categories your accountant has confirmed.
  2. At the end of each return period, compare relevant goods against 2% of VAT-inclusive turnover and against the £1,000-a-year figure, scaled to the period as the guidance describes.
  3. Apply the right rate for that period: your business-type rate, the 16.5% rate, and the 1% first-year discount where it applies.
  4. Track VAT-inclusive turnover against the £230,000 leaving limits, both the anniversary test and the 30-day test.
  5. Compare, as a side calculation, what the return would have been under standard accounting, so you can see whether the scheme still helps.

What stays with a person

  • Whether a particular cost counts as goods, where the guidance is not clear.
  • Which business-type rate applies, especially if you do more than one kind of work.
  • Whether to join, stay in or leave the scheme.

A worked example

Example figures only. A freelance software developer in Leeds is in her second year of VAT registration on the Flat Rate Scheme. In one quarter she invoices £24,000 plus £4,800 VAT, so VAT-inclusive turnover is £28,800. She buys £300 of goods that count for the test.

  1. The agent calculates 2% of £28,800 as £576 and the quarterly share of £1,000 as £250. Relevant goods of £300 are above £250 but below £576. Because they fall short of one of the two figures, she counts as a limited cost business this quarter.
  2. The agent applies 16.5% to £28,800, giving a VAT payment of £4,752.
  3. It shows the comparison: under standard accounting she would pay £4,800 output VAT less any input VAT on purchases. With few purchases, the saving from the scheme is small.
  4. Her accountant reviews the comparison over four quarters and advises her on whether to stay in the scheme.

The agent did the arithmetic every quarter. The decision about the scheme stayed with her and her adviser.

Common mistakes the checks catch

  • Applying the flat rate to VAT-exclusive turnover instead of VAT-inclusive turnover, which understates the payment.
  • Running the limited cost test once a year instead of for each return period.
  • Counting services, equipment or staff food as goods for the test.
  • Keeping the 1% first-year discount after the first anniversary of VAT registration.
  • Missing the £230,000 leaving limit after a large contract.

Each of these is a rule applied the same way every period, which is where an agent is most reliable. Ambiguous categories still go to a person.

Where Pryme fits

The Pryme Finance agent records each purchase with its source document, which is what a quarterly limited cost test depends on. Its work is recorded and traceable, and it stops at the ceiling you set. Read Can AI do your bookkeeping? for the limits. For other UK VAT choices, see cash and annual accounting and the £90,000 registration threshold.

Questions people ask

Who can join the VAT Flat Rate Scheme?

GOV.UK says you can join if you expect VAT taxable turnover of £150,000 or less, excluding VAT, in the next 12 months, subject to other eligibility conditions.

What is a limited cost business?

A business whose relevant goods cost less than 2% of turnover, or less than £1,000 a year if that is higher. It pays a flat rate of 16.5%.

Can I reclaim VAT on purchases under the scheme?

Generally no, except for certain capital assets costing more than £2,000.

Is the Flat Rate Scheme always cheaper?

No. It simplifies returns, but for limited cost businesses at 16.5% it can cost more than standard VAT accounting. Ask your accountant to compare.
