Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

UBA SMS alert charge and how to opt out

What UBA charges per SMS alert on its 2026 tariff, why it appears as a monthly debit, whether you can opt out, and how free email alerts compare.

The short answer

UBA's September 2026 Service Charges and Rates lists SMS alerts at ₦6 per SMS on most savings, current, SME and domiciliary accounts, ₦150 per SMS on Diaspora savings accounts, and free on NextGen accounts. The charges are typically collected as one debit for the period. Under the CBN's Guide to Charges, SMS alerts are mandatory for customer-induced transactions, so you generally cannot switch them off entirely, but email alerts carry no charge and you can ask UBA about reducing non-essential SMS.

What UBA charges

Every transaction alert sent by text costs the bank money, and the CBN allows banks to recover that cost from customers. UBA's tariff document, published in September 2026, sets out the SMS charge by account type:

Account type (per UBA tariff)SMS alert charge
Savings: Kiddies, Teens, Bumper, Regular, Target₦6 per SMS
Savings: NextGenFree
Savings: Diaspora₦150 per SMS
Current accounts₦6 per SMS
SME and corporate accounts₦6 per SMS
Domiciliary accounts₦6 per SMS (equivalent)

The Diaspora figure is much higher than the rest, and the tariff does not explain why. If you hold a Diaspora account and receive many alerts, this line deserves attention.

Why it shows as one monthly debit

Rather than deducting ₦6 every time a text goes out, banks usually add up the alerts sent during a period and debit the total in one entry, often labelled "SMS alert charges" or similar. That is why you may see a single debit of a few hundred naira at month end that seems to come from nowhere.

Worked example (illustrative)

Example: in a month you make 40 card payments and transfers and receive 25 credits, each generating one alert. That is 65 alerts. At ₦6 each the charge is 65 × ₦6 = ₦390 for the month. Over a year at the same activity, 65 × 12 = 780 alerts, or ₦4,680. On a Diaspora account at ₦150 per SMS, the same 65 alerts would cost ₦9,750 in a single month.

Can you opt out?

The CBN's Guide to Charges (effective 1 January 2020) treats SMS alerts as mandatory for customers, with banks allowed to recover cost only on customer-induced transactions and not on bank-induced ones such as charges. In practice that means a bank should keep sending you alerts for transactions you make. A full opt-out is generally not offered for that reason, and alerts are a real protection: they are often the first sign of fraud.

What you can do:

  • Turn on email alerts. The CBN guide says email alerts carry no charge. Ask UBA to enable them; they also give a searchable record.
  • Ask about non-transaction texts. Marketing or informational SMS should not be what you are paying for; ask UBA to remove them.
  • Check bank-induced charges. You should not be billed for alerts on debits the bank itself initiates, such as fees, under the CBN guide.
  • Use the app's notifications for a running view of activity, while keeping SMS as the official alert.
  • Consider the account type. UBA's tariff lists NextGen savings alerts as free; check whether that product suits you.

How to check and query your SMS charges

  1. Download a statement for the period and find the SMS debit line.
  2. Count roughly how many alerts you received and multiply by the tariff rate.
  3. If the debit looks high, or includes bank-induced alerts, email cfc@ubagroup.com with the statement extract and ask for a breakdown.
  4. Keep the reply. If not resolved, see UBA complaint escalation.

For the full set of UBA charges that appear on statements, see UBA card maintenance fee, UBA stamp duty and the CBN's caps in the CBN Guide to Charges summary.

What the alerts are for

It is tempting to see alerts only as a cost, but they do real work. An SMS for every debit tells you within seconds if someone else is using your card or account, which gives you a chance to block it before more money goes. A credit alert confirms a payment has landed, although a text alone is not proof; scammers fake them, and you should check your balance in the app. See how to spot a fake credit alert.

Email alerts are free and searchable, and app notifications show the same information instantly, so many customers use all three. If you rely on alerts to watch for fraud, keep SMS on the number you carry every day.

Common questions about the debit line

  • The charge appeared on an account I rarely use. Interest postings or charges can trigger alerts; under the CBN guide, alerts for bank-induced entries should not be charged, so ask UBA.
  • I was charged although my phone was off. The cost arises when UBA sends the SMS, not when you read it.
  • I have two accounts on one number. Each account generates its own alerts and charges.
  • I changed my number. Update it with UBA so alerts, and the charge for them, go to a line you use; see changing your UBA phone number.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme shows every movement in the app and uses an authenticator app for approvals rather than SMS codes. Check current charges in the app before you rely on any figure. See Pryme security and how Pryme works.

Questions people ask

How much is UBA SMS alert charge?

UBA's September 2026 tariff lists ₦6 per SMS on most savings, current, SME and domiciliary accounts, ₦150 per SMS on Diaspora savings accounts, and free alerts on NextGen accounts.

How do I stop UBA SMS alerts?

Under the CBN Guide to Charges, SMS alerts for customer transactions are mandatory, so a full stop is generally not offered. You can ask UBA to enable free email alerts and remove non-transaction texts.

Why did UBA debit me for SMS?

Banks usually total the alerts sent over a period and debit the cost in one entry. At ₦6 per SMS, 65 alerts in a month would be ₦390.

Are UBA email alerts free?

The CBN Guide to Charges says email alerts carry no charge. Ask UBA to switch them on for your account.
