Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Can you borrow for a visa or japa in Nigeria? Travel loan facts

Lenders will fund some travel costs, but a loan parked in your account will not pass as proof of funds. What a travel loan can cover, and what it cannot.

The short answer

You can borrow in Nigeria for genuine travel costs such as visa fees, flights or a first month's rent abroad, usually through a personal loan or a bank's travel loan. What a loan cannot do is serve as proof of funds: visa rules such as the UK's require money to be held for a set period and to belong to you or an accepted sponsor, so a balance borrowed just before applying fails the test and can lead to refusal.

Which travel costs a loan can legitimately cover

Relocation has real upfront costs, and borrowing for some of them is a normal use of credit. Ecobank Nigeria's loans page, for example, lists a travel loan alongside its personal loans. Typical costs people finance:

  • Visa application fees and any health or service surcharges set by the destination
  • Flights, booked once a visa is granted
  • Medical tests, document translation and certification
  • A rent deposit and first month's living costs at the destination
  • Course deposits where a school asks for one before issuing paperwork

The common thread is that the money is spent on a cost, not shown to an embassy as wealth. That distinction decides whether borrowing helps or harms the application.

Why borrowed proof of funds fails

Visa officers want evidence that you can support yourself from money that is really yours. The UK Student route is a clear example. Guidance from the University of Greenwich, reflecting UK Visas and Immigration rules, says personal funds must be held for 28 consecutive days without falling below the required amount, and the bank statement must be no older than 31 days when you apply. Money from anyone who is not an official sponsor has to be in your own account, and loans taken by parents are not accepted as student-loan evidence.

A loan credited a week before the application does not meet a 28-day rule. A large unexplained credit also invites questions about where it came from, and inconsistent or misleading financial evidence can lead to refusal. Other countries publish their own rules, so read the official guidance for your destination and visa type.

How lenders view a japa loan

A lender's concern is repayment after you leave. A salary-based loan assumes the salary continues; if you resign to relocate, the source of repayment ends. Bank loan terms usually allow recovery from your accounts. Access Bank's PayDay loan page, for example, says that loans past due can be deducted from any account linked to your BVN, and NIBSS describes the Global Standing Instruction as a way to recover defaulted funds across accounts identified by BVN.

Leaving Nigeria does not end a Nigerian loan. A default is reported to credit bureaus, and CRC's FAQs say reports show six years of history. That matters if you later return, open accounts or guarantee a family member's loan.

A worked example: borrowing only for costs

Example only. Tunde has a skilled-worker job offer and has saved enough to meet the destination's maintenance requirement himself. He borrows ₦1,200,000 for flights and a rent deposit, to be repaid over 12 months while he works out his notice. At 2.95% a month on a reducing balance, the monthly repayment is about ₦120,200 and total repayments about ₦1,442,300, so the interest is about ₦242,300. His notice period covers only three months, so he must keep paying from abroad for nine months. He plans that before borrowing, not after.

Repaying a Nigerian loan once you have left

Most relocation loans outlive the borrower's last Nigerian payslip. Plan the repayment route before you board:

  • Keep the account the lender debits open and funded; a closed or empty account turns a missed payment into a default quickly
  • Set a reminder a few days before each due date, allowing for transfer time from abroad
  • Ask the lender whether you can clear the balance early without a penalty; GTBank's QuickCredit page, for example, says pre-liquidation carries no penalty
  • Keep the lender's official repayment details and pay only into accounts in the lender's own name
  • Get a written closure letter when the loan is repaid, and keep it with your records

If your income abroad starts later than planned, contact the lender before a payment is missed. A rescheduled loan is far less damaging than a default on your bureau record.

Costs a loan should not cover

Some spending around a move is better met from savings or not at all. Payments to agents who promise a visa, a job or a guaranteed outcome are a common route to fraud; official visa fees are paid to the government or its appointed application centre, at the price published on its own site. Do not borrow to pay a "processing fee" to an individual. And do not borrow to inflate a statement, as set out above.

Steps before you borrow for travel

  1. Read the official financial requirements for your visa, including how long funds must be held.
  2. Separate costs (fees, flights, deposits) from evidence (savings you must show).
  3. Borrow only for costs, and only after you know the timeline.
  4. Agree how you will repay from abroad: a standing transfer, a naira balance, or early repayment before you leave.
  5. Check any loan app is on the FCCPC approved digital lenders list before you use it.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not provide proof-of-funds loans. You can open a Pryme account from any country, holding NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each, which helps you keep paying naira obligations after you move. See multicurrency accounts and sending money, and read how the NRBVN works for Nigerians abroad.

Questions people ask

Can I take a loan for proof of funds for a visa?

It is risky and often fails. Rules such as the UK's require funds held for 28 consecutive days in your own or an accepted sponsor's account, and a recent loan credit can lead to questions or refusal.

Which bank gives travel loans in Nigeria?

Some banks list one; Ecobank Nigeria's loans page includes a travel loan. Most people use a general personal loan. Compare written offers for rate, fees and tenor.

What happens to my Nigerian loan if I relocate?

It remains due. Lenders can recover from accounts linked to your BVN and report defaults to credit bureaus, whose records last for years.

Can I borrow for japa visa fees?

Yes, visa and travel fees are a legitimate use of a personal loan, provided you can repay it on your actual income after you leave.
