Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Trade invoice red flags banks watch on UK–Nigeria deals

Over-invoicing, under-invoicing, third-party payers and vague goods: the trade patterns that make banks ask questions on UK–Nigeria deals.

The short answer

Banks look for invoices whose price, quantity or description does not match the goods or the trader's normal business, payments made by or to unrelated third parties, and documents that change after the fact. The FATF and Egmont Group group these trade-based money laundering indicators under business structure, trade activity, trade documents and commodities, and account and transaction activity (March 2021).

Trade-based money laundering moves value by misstating trade rather than by moving suitcases of cash. An invoice that says £50,000 for goods worth £20,000 shifts £30,000 across a border under cover of commerce; one that says £20,000 for £50,000 of goods does the reverse. Because UK–Nigeria trade involves foreign exchange pressure, agents and informal payment routes, banks on both sides watch it closely. Knowing what they see helps an honest trader avoid looking like a dishonest one.

How the indicators are grouped

The FATF and the Egmont Group of financial intelligence units published Trade-Based Money Laundering: Risk Indicators on 11 March 2021, building on their December 2020 report on trends. It sorts indicators into four groups, and bank questions usually fall into one of them.

Structure of the business
Who the trader is: age of the company, ownership, whether its premises and staff match its volumes.
Trade activity
Whether the goods, routes and counterparties make sense for that business.
Trade documents and commodities
Whether invoices, bills of lading and descriptions are consistent and plausible.
Account and transaction activity
How the money moves: who pays, from where, in what pattern.

Invoice patterns that draw questions

Price that does not match the goods

A carton of crayfish invoiced at several times what similar consignments cost, or a container of machinery invoiced at scrap value, is the classic signal. Over-invoicing UK exports to Nigeria can move naira out at a better rate than the official market; under-invoicing Nigerian exports to the UK can leave proceeds abroad. Nigeria's export proceeds rules make this a live issue for your supplier (see Form NXP and export proceeds).

Vague or shifting descriptions

"Assorted foodstuff" or "general goods" with no quantities, weights or commodity codes leaves room for anything. So does an invoice amended after shipment, or a quantity on the invoice that differs from the bill of lading or packing list.

Payments that come from somewhere else

A Nigerian buyer whose payment arrives from a third company in another country, or a supplier who asks you to pay a personal account, a relative or an agent, breaks the link between the trade and the money. Splitting one invoice into several smaller payments, or paying the same invoice twice and asking for a refund to a different account, are related patterns.

Goods that do not fit the business

A grocery importer suddenly buying electronics, or a newly formed company with no trading history moving large volumes, invites questions about the business structure itself.

SignalInnocent explanation to documentWhat to keep
Price above usualPremium grade, small batch, air freightQuotes from other suppliers, spec sheet
Third-party payerGroup company pays for subsidiaryLetter from buyer, group structure
Amended invoiceShort shipment correctedOriginal and credit note, shipping docs
New line of goodsBusiness expandingPurchase order, customer demand evidence

Why UK firms apply enhanced checks

Under regulation 33 of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, as amended from 30 June 2026, firms must apply enhanced due diligence where a party is established in a country on the FATF's call-for-action list, and must weigh geographical factors such as weak anti-money laundering controls, corruption and sanctions. Regulation 33(7) also says one factor alone does not always make a situation high risk. Check the FATF lists at the time you trade rather than relying on a past status. In practice your bank may ask for invoices, contracts and shipping documents before releasing or sending a large payment.

What to check first on your own deals

  1. Match the invoice to the purchase order, the packing list and the bill of lading or airway bill: same goods, quantities, weights and values.
  2. Use a commodity code on the invoice, not a loose description (see finding a commodity code).
  3. Pay only the supplier named on the invoice, into an account in its name.
  4. Keep price evidence: competing quotes or past invoices for similar goods.
  5. Screen the supplier and its owners against the UK Sanctions List before the first payment.

Where Pryme fits

Clean records are the best answer to a bank's questions. A Pryme Business Account lets you pay a Nigerian supplier in naira or receive from a buyer in GBP, USD or EUR, with each payment tied to its invoice; invoicing and verifiable receipts and statements from VerifyDoc.ai give a counterparty a document they can check is unaltered. The Finance agent prepares reconciliations; a person approves. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

What is over-invoicing in Nigeria–UK trade?

Stating a price above the real value of the goods so more money moves across the border than the trade justifies. Under-invoicing is the reverse. Both are listed trade-based money laundering patterns.

Why did my bank ask for the invoice before sending money to Nigeria?

Banks check that a payment matches a real trade. Invoices, contracts and shipping documents let them see the goods, price and parties line up.

Is it a red flag if my Nigerian buyer pays from another company?

It can be. Third-party payments break the link between trade and money. Ask for a written explanation and evidence of the relationship, and keep it.

Who published the trade-based money laundering indicators?

The FATF and the Egmont Group of financial intelligence units, on 11 March 2021, as a supplement to their December 2020 report.
