Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Tips and service charge in UK hospitality: where AI agents fit

The UK tipping law in general terms: passing on tips, a written policy, records and timing, and how an AI agent can keep the records while people decide.

The short answer

Since 1 October 2024, employers in Great Britain must pass on qualifying tips to workers in full, distribute them fairly under a written policy, pay them by the end of the following month and keep records. An AI agent can track tips by shift, prepare the allocation from your policy and keep the records, but the policy itself and any dispute should stay with people and an adviser.

Tips used to be handled informally in many UK restaurants, bars, hotels and salons. The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 changed that. It applies to tips paid by customers, including those paid by card, and comes with a statutory code of practice on fair and transparent distribution. The rules are simple to state and fiddly to run, which makes them a useful job for an agent with a person signing off.

This is a general summary, not legal or tax advice. Check the current Act, code and HMRC guidance, and take advice for your business.

The rules in general terms

RequirementGeneral positionSource to check
Pass on tipsEmployers must pass on qualifying tips to workers in full, without deductions other than tax and similarThe Act and the code of practice
Fair distributionAllocation must be fair, having regard to the codeCode of practice
Written policyA written tipping policy must be available to workersThe Act and the code
TimingTips should be paid by the end of the month after the month the customer paid themThe Act
RecordsRecords of tips and their allocation must be kept, and workers can ask to see themThe Act
Tax and National InsuranceTips are taxable; National Insurance treatment depends on how tips are collected and distributed, including through a troncHMRC guidance E24

What an AI agent can do

The obligations are mostly about records and timing, and that is where an agent helps. It does not decide what is fair; it applies the policy you have adopted and shows its working.

  • Record card tips by shift and location from the payment data, and cash tips as entered by staff.
  • Apply your written allocation rules, such as points per role or hours worked, and show the calculation per person.
  • Prepare the payment for the deadline and send it for approval with the calculation attached.
  • Keep the records and produce a copy when a worker asks to see the information about them.
  • Flag changes that need a person: a new role not covered by the policy, a worker disputing their share, a site with unusual figures.

What must stay with people

Fairness is a judgement. Whether kitchen staff share in tips, how managers are treated, how agency workers are included: these are decisions for the owner, made with regard to the code and, ideally, after consulting staff. The agent can model the effect of different rules on each person's share, but a person should choose.

  • Writing and changing the tipping policy.
  • Deciding whether to use a tronc and who runs it.
  • Handling a worker's complaint about their allocation.
  • Tax and National Insurance treatment, with an adviser.
  • Approving the payment run.

Disputes about tips can go to an employment tribunal, which is another reason to keep clear records. An agent that records every allocation and the rule that produced it gives the owner evidence rather than recollection. See the explainer on what an AI agent's audit trail should record.

Running it month to month

The practical difficulty with tips is not the principle but the monthly mechanics. Card tips arrive mixed in with card takings. Some sites still take cash tips. Staff join and leave mid-month, change roles, or work across two sites. Agency workers may be on the rota. Each of these needs the policy to say something, and the records to show what happened.

  1. At month end, the agent totals card tips from the payment data and cash tips from the recorded entries, by site.
  2. It pulls hours or shifts from the rota and applies the allocation rule in your written policy.
  3. It lists anyone whose role, site or start date is not clearly covered, rather than guessing.
  4. It prepares the payment with the calculation per person, for the owner or payroll lead to approve.
  5. After payment, it files the calculation and the approval with the month's records.

Keep the policy short and specific. A rule like "tips shared by hours worked, front of house one point, kitchen 0.8 points, managers excluded except when working shifts" can be applied the same way every month. A rule like "tips shared fairly among the team" cannot.

Worked example

Example only, invented figures and rules. A bar in Bristol collects GBP 4,800 in card tips in March. Its written policy allocates by hours worked, with front-of-house roles at one point per hour and kitchen roles at 0.8 points per hour.

RoleHoursPointsShare
Front of house (6 people)720720GBP 3,323
Kitchen (4 people)400320GBP 1,477
Total1,1201,040GBP 4,800

The agent prepares the per-person figures, notes that one new kitchen porter role is not named in the policy, and sends both to the owner. The owner confirms the porter is covered by the kitchen rule, approves the run, and it is paid with April wages, inside the deadline.

Where Pryme fits

On a Pryme Business account, the Finance agent can hold the tip records and prepare allocations, payroll pays them with approval, and the Compliance agent keeps the policy and its review date on the obligations register. Every step is recorded. For the wider back office, see AI agents for restaurants or open an account.

Questions people ask

Do UK employers have to pass on all tips?

Under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, employers in Great Britain must pass on qualifying tips in full to workers, subject to tax deductions, and distribute them fairly. Check the Act and code for your situation.

When must tips be paid to staff in the UK?

Generally by the end of the month after the month in which the customer paid the tip.

Can an AI agent decide how tips are shared?

It can apply your written policy and model alternatives, but the policy and any disputed allocation should be decided by people, with regard to the code of practice.

What records of tips should a UK business keep?

Records of tips received and how they were allocated, which workers can ask to see. An agent can keep these and produce them on request.
