Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Thin credit file: why lenders say they cannot score you

No data is not bad data. Why Nigerian lenders decline people with little bureau history, and practical ways to build a record lenders can read.

The short answer

A thin credit file means a bureau holds too little reported history on you for a lender to judge how you repay, often because you have never borrowed from a lender that reports. It is not a black mark, but because most lenders must check a bureau before lending, an empty or near-empty file can still lead to a refusal; the fix is to build reported, on-time history.

What "thin file" means

Credit bureaus build files from what credit information providers send them: banks, microfinance banks, other lenders, and, under the Credit Reporting Act 2017, potentially insurers, leasing companies, cooperatives, utilities such as electricity and telecoms companies, and businesses selling on post-paid or instalment terms. If none of these has reported a facility in your name, the bureau has your identity details and little else.

A file can be thin even if you have managed money well for years. Paying rent in cash, saving at home, or using a prepaid meter and prepaid airtime leaves no credit record, because nobody extended you credit.

Why it leads to refusals

Section 12(f) of the Act requires lenders to obtain a report from at least one bureau before granting any form of credit. When that report comes back thin, the lender has nothing to measure you against. A score may not be produced at all, or it may be built on very little. Lenders that rely heavily on bureau data often decline, or offer a small amount first.

If you are declined, section 9(6)(c) entitles you to be told the reason within 15 working days and to a free copy of the report the lender used. That tells you whether the problem is thin data or something else.

Thin fileBad file
Little or no reported historyHistory with late payments or defaults
Lender cannot judge youLender judges you as risky
Fixed by building historyFixed by settling debts and building clean history over time
Often: young adults, new returnees, cash earners, first-time borrowersAnyone who missed payments

Check it really is thin

Sometimes a file only looks thin because your history is split. Lenders submit your name and details as they captured them, so a misspelt name or wrong date of birth can put part of your history in a separate file. Pull your free report from each bureau under section 9(6)(a) of the Act; see how to get it. A lender may report to one bureau and not another, so one bureau's file may be thin when another's is not. Dispute any wrong personal details; how the BVN links your records explains why they matter.

Steps: thicken your file

  1. Start small with a lender that reports. A small facility you can comfortably repay, used and repaid on time, gives bureaus something to record. Ask the lender in writing whether it reports to bureaus, and which.
  2. Repay on time, every time. The month-by-month payment history is what lenders read first.
  3. Keep balances low. Example only: using ₦20,000 of a ₦50,000 offer is 40% (20,000 ÷ 50,000); clearing it each month shows control.
  4. Use post-paid services that report, if available. The Act lists telecoms and electricity companies among possible providers. Not all report, so ask before relying on it.
  5. Keep your details consistent across banks: same name order, date of birth and phone number.
  6. Give it time. One loan repaid builds a little history; a year of on-time payments builds a record. Then apply for larger amounts.

Groups most often affected

  • Young adults with a first salary account and no borrowing yet.
  • Returnees whose credit history was built abroad. A foreign credit record is not held by Nigerian bureaus, so it does not travel with you.
  • Traders and cash earners whose income is real but passes through few formal credit channels.
  • People who only borrow informally, from family, cooperatives or esusu groups that do not report.

For returnees, a bank statement showing steady income can help a lender alongside a thin report, even though it does not add to the bureau file.

A worked example

Example only. Ifeoma, 24, has a salary account and no loans. A bank declines her for a ₦400,000 loan, citing insufficient credit history. She takes a ₦40,000 facility she can repay from one month's pay, repays it on time, and repeats a few times over six months with two lenders that confirm they report. Her report now shows several facilities, all closed and paid on time. When she applies again, the lender has a record to read.

Where Pryme fits

Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, the lender, uses credit bureaus and are integrated with all licensed credit bureaus in Nigeria. A Loans on Spaces limit is offered based on how your Pryme account is run, not on a long bureau history alone, and the full agreement is shown before you accept. See how the limit is offered and its effect on your credit history.

Questions people ask

What does no credit history mean in Nigeria?

It means credit bureaus hold little or no reported borrowing in your name, so lenders cannot see how you repay. It is not the same as bad credit.

Can I get a loan with no credit history?

Some lenders offer small amounts first, or use other information about your account. Most lenders must still check a bureau, so expect smaller offers until you have a record.

How can I build credit history fast in Nigeria?

Take a small facility from a lender that reports to bureaus, repay it on time, and repeat. There is no shortcut; it takes months of on-time payments.

Does paying rent or electricity bills build credit?

Only if the landlord or company reports to a bureau. The Act allows utilities to report, but many do not, and prepaid services create no credit record.
