Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Textile labelling rules for clothing imported from Nigeria

Clothes you import from Nigeria to sell in Canada need a label with fibre content in English and French and your dealer identity. What goes on it.

The short answer

Under Canada's Textile Labelling Act and its Regulations, clothing you import from Nigeria to sell must carry a label showing the generic name and percentage of every fibre making up 5% or more of the fibre mass, in both English and French, plus your dealer identity: your business name and postal address, or a CA Identification Number (Competition Bureau). The Regulations let an importer bring goods in unlabelled if they are labelled before resale and the inspector is notified.

Who the rules apply to

Canada regulates textile labels through the Textile Labelling Act and the Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1551), administered by the Competition Bureau. The Bureau's summary of the requirements calls manufacturers, importers and retailers together "dealers", and puts the same duty on each: make sure a consumer textile article carries a compliant label and that any claim made about it, on quality, performance or origin, is accurate.

If you bring in agbada sets, Ankara dresses, kaftans or aso-oke pieces from a tailor in Lagos or Aba and sell them to customers in Canada, you are the importer and a dealer. It does not matter that the garments were sewn by someone else; the label is your responsibility before the goods reach a buyer. Duty is a separate question, covered in import duty on Ankara fabric and clothing.

What must be on the label

The Bureau's summary page (modified 19 January 2022) sets out three core elements. Section 11(1)(c) of the Regulations adds a fourth in some cases.

  1. Fibre content. Every fibre that makes up 5% or more of the total mass of the fibres in the article must be shown by its generic name (cotton, polyester, viscose and so on) with its percentage.
  2. Language. The generic fibre names and all fibre-related information, including terms for reclaimed or reprocessed fibres and the names of components, must appear in English and French.
  3. Dealer identity. Your company name and postal address, or your CA Identification Number. This part, unlike the fibre information, does not need to be bilingual.
  4. Country of origin, where it applies. Section 11(1)(c) of the Regulations requires the name of the country of origin where the article, or its fabric or fibre, is represented as imported. The Bureau notes that the country of origin, when required, need not be bilingual.

Getting the fibre content right

Wax prints are sold in Nigerian markets under many trade names, and a market trader's description is not a fibre test. Ask your supplier for the fibre content in writing for each fabric you buy, and keep it with the invoice. Where a garment has distinct parts, such as a cotton body with a lined yoke, the Bureau's guidance is that components can be labelled separately with their own percentages. If the fibre type cannot be determined, the Bureau allows wording such as "unknown fibres", "undetermined fibres", "miscellaneous fibres" or "mixed fibres", but the percentage of those fibres must still be stated.

Your dealer identity and the CA number

A CA Identification Number is the letters CA followed by five digits. According to the Competition Bureau's application page, it is not required, but it can replace your name and address on labels. Only Canadian businesses qualify: Canadian manufacturers, processors or finishers of textile fibre products, or Canadian businesses that import or sell them. The page states a one-time registration fee of $100, payable online by card or Interac Online, with a response expected within 5 business days online or 20 business days by post after payment is validated. A seller who would rather not print a home address on every garment usually finds the number worth having.

Permanent or removable labels

The Bureau's summary says many everyday items need a permanent label that stays attached and legible through 10 cleanings; it gives trousers, shirts, bed linens, towels and draperies as examples. Others may use a non-permanent label, such as a tag, sticker or wrapper: hosiery, gloves, sleepwear, underwear and table linens are listed. A dress or an agbada is ordinary clothing, so plan for a sewn-in label, not a swing tag.

For custom-made articles, such as a suit made to a customer's measurements, the Bureau allows the fibre content and dealer identity to appear on the invoice or bill of sale instead, provided correctly labelled samples or swatches are available for the customer to see before buying. That can fit a bespoke order business where the client picks fabric from swatches.

What is outside the rules

Schedule II of the Regulations exempts certain articles from the labelling requirement, including footwear, handbags, toys and sports equipment (other than sport garments) that incorporate a textile, belts, suspenders and bandages, and articles intended for one-time use. A beaded bag or a pair of Ankara-trimmed shoes is therefore treated differently from a dress. The Bureau also publishes separate guidance on fabric sold by the piece at retail; read it before selling Ankara by the yard.

Labelling after the goods arrive

You do not have to get your Lagos tailor to sew compliant labels in before shipping. Section 8(1) of the Regulations allows a dealer to import a prescribed article without a disclosure label, provided the dealer applies the label in the prescribed manner before resale and notifies the inspector; section 6(d) exempts an imported article labelled before resale under section 8. Many small importers find it easier to have a Canadian label maker produce bilingual labels and sew them in here. Either way, nothing goes on the rail or in the post to a customer until it is labelled.

Quebec has further language requirements, administered by the Office québécois de la langue française, so check those before selling into Quebec.

A worked example

Example only. Bisi runs a small online boutique from Mississauga and imports 40 cotton Ankara dresses with a polyester lining from a tailor in Lagos. The supplier's written specification says the dress body is 100% cotton and the lining 100% polyester. Her sewn-in label could read:

Label lineWhy it is there
Body: 100% cotton / Corps : 100 % cotonFibre content by component, bilingual
Lining: 100% polyester / Doublure : 100 % polyesterSecond component, bilingual
CA00000 (her own number)Dealer identity in place of name and address
Made in NigeriaCountry of origin, if the article is represented as imported

Bisi imports the dresses unlabelled, has the labels sewn in at a local workroom, and notifies the inspector as section 8(1) requires, before any dress is listed for sale. The CA number above is a placeholder; she would print her own.

Steps before you place an order

  1. Ask the supplier for the fibre content of every fabric and lining, in writing.
  2. Decide whether to use your name and address or apply for a CA Identification Number.
  3. Draft a bilingual label for each style and check it against the Bureau's requirements.
  4. Decide whether labels go in before shipping or in Canada before resale, and if in Canada, notify the inspector.
  5. Sort out the customs side: your importer account and broker. See registering for CARM and whether you need a customs broker.

Where Pryme fits

You can pay your Lagos tailor or fabric supplier from a Pryme Business Account in naira or another currency held, with the rate and the fee shown before you approve. Keep the supplier's fibre specification with a verifiable payment receipt from Pryme and VerifyDoc.ai, so each batch has a clear paper trail.

Questions people ask

Do clothes imported from Nigeria need French on the label in Canada?

Yes, for the fibre information. The generic fibre names and fibre-related terms must be in English and French. Your dealer identity and country of origin do not need to be bilingual.

Can I sell Ankara clothes in Canada without a label?

Not to consumers. You may import them unlabelled, but the Regulations require a compliant label to be applied before resale and the inspector to be notified.

Who can get a CA number for clothing labels?

Only Canadian businesses that make, process, finish, import or sell textile fibre products. The Competition Bureau's page states a one-time fee of $100.

Do handbags and shoes made with Ankara need a fibre label?

Schedule II of the Regulations exempts footwear and handbags that incorporate a textile, along with belts and some other articles. Dresses and other clothing are not exempt.
