Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Elsewhere in the Act:

Deductions and allowances that work like exemptions

  • Donations: a company may deduct donations to public funds, statutory bodies, religious, charitable, educational and scientific institutions in Nigeria and public emergency interventions, up to 10% of profit before tax (s.163).
  • Research and development: deductible up to 5% of turnover (s.164).
  • Low-income wage awards and net new hires: an extra 50% deduction for qualifying costs in two calendar years between 2023 and 2025 (s.162(3)).
  • Individuals' eligible deductions: pension, NHF, NHIS, mortgage interest, life assurance and rent relief (s.30), covered in personal income tax bands and reliefs.
  • Small companies: not an exemption but a 0% rate (s.56) and no development levy (s.59); see small company tax.

Reading the list carefully

"Not derived from a trade or business"

The exemptions for friendly societies, co-operatives, charities, trade unions and government bodies in paragraph (a) only cover profits or gains not derived from a trade or business they carry on. A church that runs a school as a commercial venture, or a co-operative that trades with non-members, should not assume the trading profit is exempt.

Foreign income through approved channels

Paragraph (s) exempts dividends, interest, rent and royalties earned abroad and brought into Nigeria through approved channels. The Act does not define approved channels in that paragraph, so keep bank records that show the inflow and its source. Salary, fees and business income from abroad are not in this paragraph; see tax on dollar income.

Minimum wage earners

Paragraph (t) exempts income from an employment where gross income from that employment is the national minimum wage or less. Someone on minimum wage in one job who also earns trading income is exempt on the wage but taxable on the trading profit.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

An individual receives ₦4,000,000 salary, ₦500,000 interest on FGN bonds and ₦1,200,000 of rent from a London flat remitted through a Nigerian bank. The bond interest is exempt under paragraph (n) and the foreign rent under paragraph (s), if brought in through approved channels. Only the salary, after eligible deductions, is taxed at the personal income tax bands. Pryme accounts can receive the GBP rent into local GBP account details and keep it in pounds until the holder chooses to convert with Swap, with the statement showing the inflow.

How we put this together

We read the gazetted texts of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 (Official Gazette No. 117, Vol. 112, dated 26 June 2025) section by section. The Nigeria Revenue Service website lists these Acts on its laws page, but its topic pages load in the browser and could not be read by our tools, so we worked from copies of the Gazette hosted by a third party and checked figures against the section and schedule numbers quoted here. Regulations, practice notes and orders issued after the Acts may change how a rule applies; where something depends on an order or regulation we say so. Descriptions are shortened from the statutory text, and paragraph letters follow section 162(1). The example is ours.

Questions people ask

Are pensions taxed in Nigeria?

Pension, gratuity and retirement benefits granted under the Pension Reform Act are exempt under section 162(1)(i).

Is foreign rent or dividend income taxed in Nigeria?

Dividends, interest, rent and royalties earned abroad are exempt if brought into Nigeria through approved channels, under section 162(1)(s).
