Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Taking profits out of a Nigerian company to an owner abroad

Paying dividends to an owner abroad: Nigerian withholding tax, treaty rates, tax clearance, the CCI and how the money reaches your account.

The short answer

The usual route is a dividend: the company declares it from profits, deducts 10% Nigerian withholding tax and pays the rest to you. To convert and send it abroad through the official market, the receiving bank will expect a Certificate of Capital Importation for your original investment and evidence that the tax has been paid.

The options for getting money out

An owner abroad has four ways to take value out of a Nigerian company, each with its own tax and paperwork:

RouteNigerian tax deducted (PwC, May 2026)Paperwork
Dividend10% withholding tax for non-residentsBoard and shareholder approval, accounts showing profit
Interest on a shareholder loan10% withholding taxLoan agreement, CCI for the loan
Repayment of loan principalNone, it is not incomeLoan agreement, CCI
Management or technical fees10% withholding tax for non-resident companiesService agreement, transfer pricing, NOTAP registration

Dividends are the cleanest when the company is profitable. The other routes are covered in our guides on funding by loan or equity and management fees from a Nigerian subsidiary.

Withholding tax on dividends

PwC's Nigeria withholding tax summary, reviewed in May 2026, gives a 10% rate on dividends paid to non-resident companies, and lists 10% for dividends generally. The company deducts it at payment and remits it to the tax authority.

Tax treaties can lower the rate, but only some do. PwC's table lists reduced 7.5% rates under the treaties with China, Singapore, South Africa, Spain and Sweden, and lists 10% for the UK. The 1987 UK-Nigeria treaty caps dividend tax at 12.5% (for a company holding at least 10% of the voting power) or 15%, which is above Nigeria's domestic 10%, so the domestic rate applies. Our list of Nigeria's double tax treaties shows which countries have one.

Is the 10% final? Commentators read section 19 of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 as treating it as the final Nigerian tax for non-residents, but we have not confirmed this in an official NRS publication. The country you live in may still tax the dividend and give a credit for the Nigerian tax, often limited to the treaty rate. Our guide on withholding tax on Nigerian dividends for non-residents covers the personal side.

A worked example

Example only. Your Lagos company has audited profits and declares a ₦20,000,000 dividend. You own 100% and live in the UK.

Gross dividend
₦20,000,000
Nigerian withholding tax at 10%
₦2,000,000, remitted by the company to the tax authority
Net dividend paid to you
₦18,000,000
In the UK
Declared on your return; HMRC's HS263 helpsheet explains that credit for foreign tax is limited to the lower of the foreign tax paid, or the treaty-limited amount, and the UK tax on that income

Check: ₦20,000,000 minus ₦2,000,000 is ₦18,000,000. The sterling amount you receive depends on the rate on the day you convert, which is not part of the tax calculation.

The FX route: from naira to your account abroad

This is where preparation pays off. The NIPC's FAQ says Nigeria's investment laws guarantee foreign investors the right to repatriate profits, dividends and capital freely, after paying applicable taxes. In practice, that right runs through your bank and depends on documents:

  1. The CCI. Mondaq's September 2024 guide says a Certificate of Capital Importation, issued when your money first came in, enables repatriation of dividends through an authorised dealer bank. Templars' FAQ adds that without a CCI an investor cannot use the official FX market for repatriation.
  2. Tax evidence. The same Mondaq guide says tax clearance is needed for dividend remittances. Keep the withholding tax receipt and the company's tax clearance certificate.
  3. Corporate documents. The board resolution and shareholder approval declaring the dividend, and the audited accounts showing the profit.
  4. The request. The company asks its bank to buy foreign currency and remit the net dividend to your named account abroad.

If you invested without a CCI, you can still receive the dividend in naira and convert it through ordinary channels, but you lose the documented right to official-market repatriation for that investment. Fix it for future investments by asking for a CCI each time money comes in.

What to check before declaring

  • The accounts show distributable profit for the year, and the company has filed its returns. Our guide on company tax filings for owners abroad sets out the calendar.
  • The company can pay the dividend and still meet its bills and tax.
  • The withholding tax will be remitted on time; PwC notes WHT returns are due by the 21st of the following month.
  • Your bank has seen the CCI and knows the remittance is coming.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can hold the naira dividend and foreign currency in one place, and Swap converts only when you choose. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

What is the withholding tax on dividends paid to a non-resident in Nigeria?

10%, as PwC's May 2026 Nigeria summary lists. Some treaties reduce it to 7.5%; the UK treaty does not reduce it below 10%.

Can I send dividends abroad without a CCI?

You can receive them in naira, but Templars notes that without a Certificate of Capital Importation you cannot use the official FX market to repatriate. A CCI is obtained when the investment first comes in.

Do I need a tax clearance certificate to send dividends abroad?

Mondaq's guide on repatriation says tax clearance is needed for dividend remittances. Keep the withholding tax receipt and the company's TCC ready for the bank.

Will I pay tax again on Nigerian dividends where I live?

Possibly. Your country of residence may tax the dividend and give credit for Nigerian tax, often limited to the treaty rate. Check your local tax authority's guidance.
